Does this ever strike a chord with me! It's like saying, people who aspire to greatness, never achieve it, because it's something that's bestowed. I've got a real issue with abuse of power. There are too many people in positions of authority that don't belong there.
I was once approached by a site creator to be a mod. I told him flat out I didn't want that responsibility or stress. I was there just to have fun. He kept pushing, trying to entice me with the promise of great software that I would have access to and I kept refusing. So, I was just a routine member on the site. He gradually developed a nasty attitude toward me, kept taking put down shots at me and eventually and unsurprisingly, the site was short lived and failed.
I can also relate to your comment about popularity. I once had a very stressful, demanding job in which I was a great performer, but in which I was also unpopular. My thinking was always, "I'm here to get a job done and to be compensated for it, not to be popular." So, being unpopular, disliked on this board is somewhat routine to me. I've got thick skin.

I just had a long sit down with a neighbor because of a bad element that has moved into my neighborhood. She has had conflicts, confrontations with all of her immediate, surrounding neighbors. This site and youtube are the only "social media" my husband and I use. We have zero interest in tweeter, facebook and all the others. This site and youtube are toxic enough. Our kids use facebook, instagram, discord and a few others but not that X because of the issues you mentioned. We're not big fans of Elon Musk to be honest.
Freedom of speech is so important, one of our most important rights. Sadly people abuse it though which ruins it for everyone else 😖 I will never understand why people can't just follow the simple rule: If you don't like it, don't participate.
