Do you wish this website was more popular?

It's a really great place for communication but most movies barely get any traffic unless they are involved in some sort of controversy. And it's sad, there is so much we could talk about and analyze there are just not that many users on here.

reply

No because it would likely mean it could no longer be a free speech platform. That's why imdb dumped the message boards.

reply

The First Amendment has nothing to do with MovieChat but this message board is very lightly moderated so that's good.

reply

I miss IMDB. I wish moviechat had a lot more traffic.

The IMDB boards closed mostly because of destructive trolls and it was no longer viable financially to keep the message boards open blue1981. Not because of free speech.

IMDB had pages of threads and posts on many films and actors. Moviechat does not.

Oh well. Things change.

reply

Well it was Ghostbusters 2016 that is often citied as being responsible for the demise of the IMDB boards. Fans said their peace and the movie is dogshit.

reply

But was it? remember when it got shut down, 2017. i remember quiet a strong pro-trump vibe on the IMDB boards, could it have something to do with him being elected? i mean it was always full of people being idiots, but why close it then? IMDB is an amazon company, how much could it really cost to keep it open? for a company so huge? peanuts, especially when amazon has prime and therefore movies be it online or physical media.

It's like when youtube took their dislike button down, that was interesting timing too. right after another election....

reply

We don't know why IMDB shut down Bensonhurst. The February 2017 closure a month after the Inaugural for Donald Trump may have been a coincidence. Maybe not.

Insult trolls and doxxers were popping up and becoming a problem. Administration was having difficulty dealing with them.

In early February 1017 Col Needham sent a vaguely-worded message to all members announcing that the boards would close in 2 week. Then, after 2 weeks, they were gone.

Only Col Needham and a few high level insiders knew why they were closing the boards. We can only speculate.

Oh well.

reply

Agree. Things get too big and you lose some magic or all of it.

This site doesn't need to become Telegraph Road...

I wish more people would show up on my weekly « What did you watch this week », play at my guessing game and join the Movie Club on weekends.

Now question is; will you be part of the problem or part of the solution?

;)

reply

Yeah. I do.

What was great about the IMDb message boards was that it was the place to talk about films. But aside from that large community becoming fragmented across different alternatives, I think the internet has simply moved on a bit from old-fashioned message boards. That's a pity. They're clearly a superior communication tool to more modern social media. But it is what it is. We just have to make do with what we've got.

reply

The world did move on but it's not good. With reddit/discord you can not look up what someone said 7 years ago and gain wisdom from their perspective on a movie. And with movies, they are not just for the moment, someone will watch the current hits of this year 10 years from now for the first time, and there won't really be a place to discuss them like before.

reply

Well said capuchin.

reply

I certainly wish we had more traffic, the quality of posters here tends to be very high and they are mostly welcoming, fun sorts. I've never encountered so many decent posters as I have here.

However, with a much larger crowd we'd likely have way more trouble makers and trolls, that's nothing I'd want to see here.
I think we do OK on MC, smallish crowd though it may be.

reply

The less people that know about Kowalski, the better. But more traffic would be nice.

reply

LOL, I HAVE NOT HAD MUCH TROUBLE WITH KOWALSKI, I just wish he didn't masturbate so much on his SHIFT LOCK keyboard button LOL. Oh, and don't get me started on Poopsey1, who rips you apart for saying "LOL", LOL.

I agree, more traffic would be nice, but I agree with the posts above that more traffic = more trolls. I'm glad the trolls for the most part (AFAIK) never transitioned here from IMDB.

reply

I loved IMDB, the sopranos board was one of the most entertaining places on the internet. but when they closed down the IMDB boards it was kinda symbolic of the end of the good old days of the internet. now everything is highly regulated, theres not much freedom of speech and i think generally people can't be bothered with it anymore.

reply

It was not a matter of "Freedom of speech" with the IMDB boards. It was too much politics, and too many trolls. I think there were so many sock puppets, people reporting each other, and immaturity going on, that it just became impossible to manage and keep clean.

reply

because you can't say "trolls and sock puppets" then say it was immature.

reply

I DO...BUT WITH THE RIGHT KIND OF POSTERS...WHICH IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN UNTIL WE ALL BAND TOGETHER AND FLUSH THAT TURD KNOWN AS THE samoanjoke!

reply

You and SamoanJoes seem to have a bit of a feud going on. I'm too busy to go search history, but what happened and who started it, and on what post or posts?

reply

YOU EVER WATCH THE OFFICE?

reply

Meh, here and there but THE OFFICE never really did much for me. See how by TYPING IN MIXED CASE, I can emphasize CERTAIN WORDS more effectively? RATHER THAN JUST TYPING IN 1980'S GREEN SCREEN MAINFRAME FONT. then ive run into people who type like this too and thats annoying also.

reply

OK...WELL BASICALLY THE samoanjoke IS MY TOBY...ALSO THE OFFICE ROCKS!...BEST SHOW EVER!@!@

reply

I hope you mean the British version?

reply

I MEAN BOTH...THEY ARE A COMBO.

reply

Never watched the American version it looks inferior.

reply

IT LOOKS INFERIOR?...NOT VERY OPEN-MINDED OF YOU...THEY ARE TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COIN...I STONE COLD LOVE THE BBC OFFICE...BUT QUITE FRANKLY I REWATCH THE AMERICAN VERSION MORE...I LOVE IT ALL.

reply

I'll open my mind.

reply

In my perfect world, the userbase here (plus enough to bring the activity back around to IMDb levels) would integrate with filmboards and their format that much more closely resembles IMDb's forums, including their ability to filter out the politics and sandbox forums from the recent posts feed. That and bump up the moderation level just enough to keep things on topic, and I'd be pretty happy.

reply

That sounds like heaven.

:D

reply

And I wish there was a Subscribe button.

reply

And a less HTML, more BBCode method of formatting, while we're at it.

reply

I've learned how to do bold, italics, and URLs, so doesn't bother me too much, but is more time-consuming. Quora lets you CTRL-b and CTRL-i, and translates URLs automatically.

reply

FUCK YOU!...FILMBOARDS IS THE DEVIL!@

reply

Another useful feature would be *user-specific* word filters à la mid-2000s 4chan to avoid such triggering events.
