Should Cultural Appropriation be relabelled as Cultural Appreciation?

That’s much nicer, right?

reply

As someone who identifies as a Middle Eastern Japanese Samurai, I agree.

reply

Hai!

reply

I agree. As long as it's done respectfully.

reply

Give me some disrespectful examples, as I was coming more from a fashion point of view (i.e. my daughter wanting to wear her hear in a certain style), so I’m a little lost.

reply

I meant in general. Ex. "Indian" Sports Mascots. Stuff like the Tomahawk Chop and teams like The Indians or the Braves.
Blackface is a big no.

What type of hairstyle?

reply

Cornrows

reply

Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

reply

Me neither.

reply

The issue is that black women have been fired for wearing hairstyles like cornrows. But, when white women do it, they are complimented and glorified like Bo Derek. There's a racist double-standard which exists re: cornrows.

Maybe it's generational, younger people tend to have the problem with Cultural Appropriation. I think Keziah's dress looks fine, too.

reply

People are being fired for their hair style? Prove it.

reply

You're not too informed, are you? Eighteen states had to pass a law against it. Congress passed a federal law last Spring, but the senate republicans failed to do the same.

Black women forbidden to wear their hair in its natural state. Imagine if white people were forbidden to wear their hair in straight or curly styles.

Just a few examples. It's a common form of racism.

reply

Well, now I have one side, that of a known liar.

reply

You've been proven wrong, again.

reply

I've been proven nothing but ignorant of one flavor of liberal stupidity.

reply

"I've been proven nothing but ignorant."

We both agree that you're ignorant.

reply

Personally, I don't have a problem with it or any hairstyle. I consider it Cultural Appreciation, but many other people consider it a negative.

She can wear a French braid style which is popular now.:

reply

She wears a French braid quite regulary.

reply

Only 8? Why would anyone give grief to a young child wearing a hairstyle? Go for it!

reply

Some people will get offended at anything and will go out of their way to find something to be offended about. It’s almost like they’re not happy unless they’re offended 🤷‍♂️

reply

Cornrows and afros are fine. As long as she doesn't start speaking with a blaccent.

reply

She's still only 8, so unlikely: -

reply

I think all clothing is fine as long as you're not mocking it. Accents go too far. And obviously you can't pretend to be a different race.

reply

I can pretend to be Canadian, eh?

reply

I'd welcome you, ya hoser.

reply

I’d be happy to appropriate some of that maple stuff.

reply

I hope you mean the mascots are ok because most Native Americans don't take offense to them. For example, the local tribes in the DC area tried to get the Red Skins to keep the name.

Link?

reply

No link = Ugly lie

reply

It's the truth. Trouble is that it is said and done. There are no current stories about it.

reply

Keeliar is a puerile idiot and doesn't know anything he/she/it didn't Google first.

reply

Link? People in glass houses...
No link = Ugly lie

reply

Yes, the Google know-it-all, the most ignorant liar in the room.

Newsflash, the people you say you're fighting for, they don't care. This is the realm of dumb white people.

reply

No link = Ugly lie

reply

Sorry, I don't have to be told what to think.

reply

reply

Link to old story is fine.

No link = Ugly lie

reply

I think it should be. I don't think it is wrong to copy a style from another culture, as long as it is done out of respect. If I want to wear traditional Japanese clothes because I admire them, I think that should be acceptable. If I wear Japanese clothes to mock Japanese people, then that is not okay.

reply

What about for comedy effect?

reply

If it is malicious, mocking comedy, then I would say no.

reply

Family Guy, for me at times, is the funniest thing on TV. No-one is spared - everyone gets it equally - I don't have a problem with that.

reply

Yes. Except when the Kardashians do it. Then they should be stoned to death.

reply

Maybe just stoned to death, full stop.

reply

Jehovah! Jehovah! Jehovah!

reply

In biblical times, they would have been used as target practice.

reply

lol the good ole days...

reply

Or Saudi Arabia now?

reply

But i need to be offended, howe can i be offended if you are appreciating me

reply

How about you being offended that I’m offended because you’re offended?

reply

Yes! I've been saying this since the nonsense debate emerged 🙄

reply

Speaking as a Leftie... I agree. This cultural appropriation shit is ridiculous, it's something white lefties use to abuse each other, a stupid holier-than-thou game that cowards play when they're afraid to attack their real enemies.

Now that isn't to say that cultural appropriation can't be harmful, but IMHO it only ought to be a big deal when there's an element of economic exploitation, such as the old example of white record companies exploiting black musicians, or when corporations mass-produce tribal artifacts and drive tribal artisans out of business. Which BTW is mostly being done in China these days, not that you'll hear a peep out of the sort of people who like to cry "cultural appropriation" about that.

reply

I think you’re pretty middle of the road and reasonable Otter. I’m a conservative but I tend to agree with your takes when I read them

reply

Thank you, it does seem that the "middle" is the only place you're going to find any common sense these days.

Cultural appropriation is a bullshit concept. It's extremely racist.

The implifications are simple; only people of certain races/nationalities are allowed to do this/wear that/etc, etc.

How is that not racist? It's a race gatekeeping fashion, music, words, food and so on.

When you apply it the other way around and say 'people of color' aren't allowed to wear certain clothing, listen to certain music, use certain words/phrases, wear their hair a certain way because it's part of 'white culture'. Then it all of a sudden would become racist.

That's the simple equation that will tell you if something is okay;
- You think talking about white people like that is fine? Replace white with black and see how it looks.
- You think talking about men like that is fine? Add black in front of it or replace it with women.

It's alarming how common it is becoming for people to blatantly slam 'cis white men'. I saw someone doing it online just today, in a discussion about Andrew Tate, saying it's alarming how many cis white men are rapist sympathizers. Such a random takeaway which they pulled from their ass. What reason is there to believe that Tates fans are all straight white men?

Well said
