Scary movies for October

My wife and I have a horror movie marathon during the month of October. We watch one movie a night every night until Halloween.

We of course watch the "standards"
The Exorcist
Rosemary's Baby
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Halloween (1 thru 3) the rest stunk in my opinion.
Friday the 13th (original)

Aside from the few slashers listed, we mostly enjoy the more atmospheric horror movies. No interest in newer slashers. I got tired of them living through the 80s when it seemed that a different slasher movie was coming out every week 😃

I'd like some suggestions on some scary movies that we may not have seen.

Not knowing your taste, these are some that I really like.

The Wailing (2016)

Hell House LLC (2015)
The Night House (2020)
Haunt (2019)
Host (2020)
Tigers are not Afraid (2019)
The Devil's Backbone (2001)
Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (1972)
The Descent (2006)
Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018)

Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (1972)

Outstanding!

reply

I would also add
May (2002)
Lake Mungo (2008)
Session 9 (2001)
Absentia (2011)
The House with Laughing Windows (1976)
Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon (2006)
Pontypool (2008)
The Loved Ones (2009)
Splinter (2008)

reply

Halloween (1 thru 3) the rest stunk in my opinion.

Amen. And anything after 3 is illegitimate and non-canon in my book.

The Shining
Black Christmas (great Halloween viewing there LOL)
Salem's Lot (1979) Best vampire movie ever!!
Dread (2009) I really like this one!!
The Believers (1987) Martin Sheen
Don't Look Now (1973) Donald Sutherland

reply

I found Dread to be disturbing. I liked it too.

reply

Did you have any sympathy for Quaid? I think I'm probably the only one that did. I feel if he hadn't have flushed his pills down the drain that none of it would've happened.

reply

I did actually. It wasn't just straight up that he was an evil villain.

reply

Exactly. Nothing one dimensional about him for sure.

reply

what was he?

reply

How do you mean? He is a human if that's what you are asking.

reply

he wasn't a villain?

reply

He certainly was the antagonist of the story, but I didn't think that he was just an straight up "evil villain".

reply

An extremely damaged person with a horrific past that he's haunted by.

reply

no.

reply

"Salem's Lot (1979) Best vampire movie ever!!"

Ain't that the TRUTH!

Thanks a lot! After 43 years I'm going to have trouble sleeping again!

Don't Look Now is all atmosphere and a sense of things being "not quite right," until the brutal finale. Really an exceptional movie among 70s horror treats, along with The Exorcist. I remember Salem's Lot playing at drive-ins (yeah, I'm old) but I can't remember much about it. I like horror but don't really like vampire films--too much schtick.

reply

I’m only listing some that are heavy on atmosphere.

The Beyond (1981)
The Woman in Black (1989)
Night of the Devils (1972)
Suspiria (1977)
City of the Living Dead (1980)
Let’s Scare Jessica to Death (1971)
Burnt Offerings (1976)
House by the Cemetery (1981)
The Wicker Man (1973)
Shock (1977)
Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972)
Phantasm (1979)
Who Can Kill a Child? (1976)
Black Sunday (1960)
The Changeling (1980)
Alice Sweet Alice (1976)
Carnival of Souls (1960)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Burnt Offerings (1976)

I am not a Karen Black fan (shoot me, I know) but I LOVE this movie.

reply

I used to have nightmares about the chauffeur when I was a kid.

I have a poster of Killer Fish (1977) in my computer room, mostly because it has Karen Black in a wet suit. 😀

reply

Lol. My mind went straight to Lee Majors on that one.

reply

Ha! It really is the perfect exploitation film with a fabulous cast.

Lee Majors, Karen Black, Margaux Hemingway, Marisa Berenson, James Franciscus and Gary Collins… You can’t go wrong.

reply

I almost watched Piranha (78) today. I liked it better than Killer Fish.

reply

Defiantly a better story. I haven’t seen it in a while but I remember that mean camp guy trying to get that little girl to swim. She’s lucky she didn’t get in the water. 😀

Ollie 🥰🥰🥰🥰

reply

100%

reply

Father Grandier? 😎

reply

Great, creepy movie, but I didn't care for the mustache.

reply

Have you seen The Hunting Party (1971)? Gene Hackman shoots his wife Candice Bergen in her hoo-ha. 😯😯🤭🤭

reply

I don't recall seeing that one.

reply

It's not a horror, it's a western starring Oliver Reed with Candice Bergen and Gene Hackman. A good watch if you're a fan of Westerns and especially if you're of fan of Oliver. 👍👍

reply

I will see if I can check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.

reply

🤤🤤🤤🤤😋😋😋😋

reply

The Legend of Hell House (1973)

reply

Watch The Shining. That movie creeps me out.

reply

Doctor Sleep was a worthy sequel.

reply

I never saw it but, I will check it out for sure!!

reply

The Exorcist: The Beginning.

Its so weird how there are two exorcist prequels, a year apart, both with Stellan Skarsgard.

reply

Dont forget about Sleep Away Camp 1 thru 4. (if you like campy horror)

In the mouth of madness is one of my fav's.

reply

Nice pun

Happened to rewatch this yesterday https://moviechat.org/tt0091064/The-Fly, possibly one of the best horror flicks from the 80s, alongside The Thing (1982). Glib and rambling Jeff Goldblum was well cast in it with plenty of darkly humored dialogue.
