Scary movies for October

My wife and I have a horror movie marathon during the month of October. We watch one movie a night every night until Halloween.

We of course watch the "standards"
The Exorcist
Rosemary's Baby
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Halloween (1 thru 3) the rest stunk in my opinion.
Friday the 13th (original)

Aside from the few slashers listed, we mostly enjoy the more atmospheric horror movies. No interest in newer slashers. I got tired of them living through the 80s when it seemed that a different slasher movie was coming out every week πŸ˜ƒ

I'd like some suggestions on some scary movies that we may not have seen.

The Haunting of Julia (1977) aka Full Circle;
- Mia Farrow stars in this british haunting story. Similar to films like The Changeling (1980), Don't Look Now (1973) and Kill, Baby...Kill! (1966). Strong atmosphere, good story, grand anamorphic cinematography, lovely OST, good acting. It also features Keir Dullea (Black Christmas, 2001: A Space Odyssey)

The Dead Pit (1989);
- This is what happens when you put Re-Animator (1985), The Beyond (1981), The Sender (1982) and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) in a blender and skimp on the costs a bit. A solid little film I thought. Very heavy atmosphere, some gore, some sex appeal, some 'WTF?'. Don't get your hopes up too high based of the films I listed but I do think this is an underseen film. A good, fun B-movie.

Curtains (1983);
- An underseen Canadian-Slasher. It features Samantha Eggar (The Brood), John Vernon (Dirty Harry, Savage Streets, Killer Klowns) & Lynne Griffin (Black Christmas). Lovely snowy visuals, a few creepy moments and a rather interesting psuedo-meta aspect along with a scathing condemnation of the 'casting couch' phenomenon. The killer adorns a creepy mask and one kill scene in particular is glorious. Well worth seeing.

Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (1974) aka, The Living Dead At Manchester Morgue
- This is an intermediate zombie film, post-Romero pre-Fulci. It's a blending of their styles. A must watch for zombie film fans. It has the gore of later zombie efforts (though not quite as brutal as some) along with an interesting concept/social commentary akin to Romeros early work.

Next of Kin (1982);
- An Australian horror film. Beautifully shot with a strong atmosphere and plenty of mystery. Interesting film.

Razorback (1984);
- An Australian horror film about a killer boar but wait! The cinematography is gorgeous! Hyper contrasted, smooth constantly moving camerawork. One of the best killer-animal films.

Cat's Eye (1985);
- A Stephen King anthology film. A stellar production with superb cinematography by Jack Cardiff (Black Narcisuss, The Red Shoes), it features James Woods, Drew Barrymore, Robert Hays & Alan King. This is a superb blending of horror and comedy. Quite dark at times, amusing at others, but always a top quality production with superb acting.

Stir of Echoes (1999);
- This is often likened too The Sixth Sense, which eclipsed this film in 1999. This is a great little thriller-horror starring Kevin Bacon. Well worth checking out if you haven't seen it before. Highly recommended.

Love Stir of Echoes πŸ‘

Same here, have seen it numerous times. I thought the boy's cryptic comment about being "afraid of the feathers" was so subtly yet dramatically explained at the end. That was some great filmmaking!

That ice skating scene from Curtains is so damn weird. It’s the first thing I think of when that movie is mentioned.

Fantastic post! I'm gonna enjoy watching some of these πŸ€—.

My favourite horror is Session 9. Not for everyone but if you like psychological ghost stories then you should like it.

I SAW THAT ONE...RENTED IT WHEN IT CAME OUT...THOUGH I WANT TO SAY I DID NOT LIKE IT...I REMEMBER WATCHING IT LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY...WHICH IS KIND OF WEIRD...MAYBE I SHOULD REVISIT THE FLICK.

The more you watch it, the more you see. I liked it better the second time around.

The Innocents (1961);
- Perhaps the oldest film I've seen that's actually scary. This is an adaptation of 'The Turning of the Screw', it stars the lovley Deborah Kerr. Brilliant story, great acting, great B&W cinematography and some of the most well executed subtle scare scenes I've ever seen. It's a masterpiece. It is an older film so some viewers may find it a tad slow, but this is a must watch for all Horror fans.

Taste of Fear (1961) aka, Scream of Fear;
- An early Hammer Thriller-Horror. Outstanding tension building and plenty of twists. It features Christoper Lee. This shares the title of 'oldest film that's actually scary' with The Innocents. This is a must watch as far as I'm concerned. The only negatives are it's somewhat derivative of another film (which I won't name as that would spoil it) and also that it maybe has a twist too many but this film is superb! It's tension building, twists and short runtime conjoin to deliver the goods. You can't go wrong with this one.

A few non-English films.

Dark Water (2002);
- One of the best East-Asian Horror films ever. This was directed and written by the same duo who made Ringu (1998), which was later remade as The Ring (2002). This film got it's own remake which featured Jennifer Connelly in 2005. This is better than the remake and I prefer it over Ringu. Great film.

Angst (1983);
- Austrian Horror film about a deranged psychopath terrorizing a family. The camerawork is truly outstanding, the OST is groovy and it's quite a nasty little film. It's a little like Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986). It's based on a true story too.
