I'm going to have to look up Vice President Barkley...

reply

Interesting fact - Truman didn't have a VP until 1949.

There have been 4 presidents who never had a VP and 18 who didn't have one during part of their term(s.)

reply

There's a great photo of Truman on Wikipedia from 1897 when he was 13...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_S._Truman

reply

The 4 Presidents who NEVER had a VP are:

John Tyler
Millard Fillmore
Andrew Johnson
Chester A. Arthur

None of them was elected after becoming President

reply

Likewise, LBJ did not have a VP until 1965.

Also, since I was born in 1951, my list is identical to yours.

reply

Interesting - I sort of consider myself well-versed in these things, but Barkley got by me completely.

Even more interesting, from FDR's death until the 48 election, Truman served WITHOUT a VP. Imagine that. What if he'd been incapacitated/killed - hard to discern how that vulnerability to succession was rationalized.

reply

During that time Sam Rayburn was the Speaker, so he would have been next in line.

reply

good thought but i was born 1945 and old men where supposed to know more and be less violent; but trump changed all that too bad no others are brave enough to start putting names in hat if enerone registered independent we could get rid of 2 party system running this country

reply

Its ironic that we elected three Vietnam-era presidents who were, basically, shirkers. You can argue that BushJr's flying jets around Tx counts, but I don't.

Gore & Kerry, who actually DID serve in-country, Kerry in combat, weren't considered macho man enough for the job.

reply

Same as you except JFK...
