Good sequel without the main star from the predecessor

We know Speed 2 was one of the worst sequel ever, and one of the reason is Keanu Reeves wasn't in it. But what other sequels that are actually decent even without having the main star returning?

Terminator 2 came to mind, but eventhough it had not the main protagonist the real star was Arnold anyway. Terminator 4 / Salvation was the one barely gets Arnold and it's actually not bad.

In a very rare occurrence, the 3 Undisputed sequels I think are better than Undisputed 1. Even though that's a good movie too.

reply

Good choice. I liked Undisputed 2 and 3. Boyka: Undisputed was not bad too.

Predator 2

Predator 2 was the first film that sprung to mind. Do James Bond films count?

reply

Did old James Bond movies keep the continuity after changing the main actors? I'm not very famliar with classic James Bond, but as far as I know the Daniel Craig version was a complete reboot (but somehow has the same M from the Brosnan era lol.)

reply

Same supporting cast other than Bond and Felix Leiter*, continuity was always messed up, the movies were never shot to the same order as Fleming had written them. The first movie was the 6th book, the second movie was the 5th book, Roger Moore’s first Bond movie was the 2nd 007 adventure written by Fleming!

But they were all sequels from Dr No to Die Another Day, Daniel Craig's Casino Royale was the first reboot.

*Different actor in nearly every movie!

The Lost World without Sam Neill.

reply

Ah yes, it's not as bad as people say. Just a little bit forgettable.

reply

It's a decent movie. The problem is that people compare it with the first one, which was Spielberg in mode "perfect pop-corn movie".

By the way, another one: Godfather II without Marlon Brando.

reply

Yes, Godfather II. One of the greatest sequel / prequel of all time! I heard Brando was supposed to be in the movie but he, being a diva, never showed up on the set.

reply

I’m still at a loss as to why Brando got so much credibility.
I get that he had a deeply immersive style to his acting and could shed all of his tears on the floor but seriously, if you had a tight budget, a strict shooting schedule PLUS a major Studio nipping at your ass would you entrust the project to some stoned fat ass that never bothered to learn his lines and had aged horribly?

Brando was great early on but Bogart and Newman
we’re better and Eastwood was the first guy on the set and knew the whole scene…He became a fine Director because he understood not only the acting bits but the entire production.

reply

I guess his school of acting was really revolutionary at the time, never before seen. He invented it.

In hindsight however, I think The Godfather II ended up better without Brando. It probably would look jarring to see Brando suddenly again after spending virtually the entire movie with DeNiro.

reply

What I think is, he must have been a helluva theater actor, and that rep has carried him. Other than The Godfather I never really liked him.

Shogun, have you seen this? Robert Duvall wearing cue cards because as you say Brando is too lazy to learn his lines. https://i.pinimg.com/474x/c8/1c/f0/c81cf0b841677f36b33b813dccee786f.jpg

reply

I have seen that image before, it’s not just a slight to the Great Robert Duvall but a clear sign Of professional laziness on Brando’s part.

The U.S. Army didn’t show up at Normandy with unloaded rifles. They practiced, they were fully loaded and they didn’t do it for a paycheck…they showed up and killed everything in sight.

Brando became a fat, lazy bum.

reply

IN NEWMAN'S BIOGRAPHY IT IS A RUNNING THEME THAT HE IS COMPARED TO BRANDO,ASKED TO BE BRANDO LIKE,TOLD HE IS BRANDOESQUE...BRANDO BRANDO BRANDO...BRANDO BUILT A GOD LIKE REPUTATION FOR HIS RAW AND REVOLUTIONARY STYLE...HE THEN BECAME AN EGO FUELED LAZY FATMAN WHO WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO WORK WITH...BUT THE SPECTER OF WHAT HE WAS LIVED ON FOR DECADES...A JESUS LIKE FIGURE OF ACTING.

reply

I’d have fired the prick as soon as he showed up on the set of Apocalypse Now 60 pounds overweight (what Green Beret Commander is that grossly obese?!?) and having no clue about his lines and scenes.

The studio is calling me with threats every two hours, they gave me $30 million to deliver and you, our BIG star, shows up with no idea what’s going on and looking like a beached whale?!?

I’d put that Brando slob right back on the next plane out, fuck him.

Telly Savalis, now there’s a guy who showed up on time and you could work with, he had a good reputation and handled his gigs properly.
He would have been a fine Col. Kurtz and he wasn’t a gigantic pain in the ass like Brando.

I couldn’t stand the original Jurassic Park.

"The Purge: Anarchy (2014)" with Frank Grillo is pretty awesome, and (for me) a lot better than the first movie.

"300: Rise of an Empire (2014)" is a decent sequel to 300.

"The Hunt for Red October (1990)" and its sequels.

reply

I've never liked any of the Purge series (I think I've seen two of them but don't remember which ones,) so I'll take your word for it.

300: Rise of an Empire was decent I agree. It also has my favorite Bond girl Eva Green (in a crazy ridiculous sex-fight scene, no less) so it's definitely a plus. It just that Athenians could never be as cool and awesome as Spartans.

reply

I agree with The Purge. The second one really is the only one I like.

reply

2 AND 3...AND THE REASON THEY ARE COOL...TWO WORDS...FRANK GRILLO.

While Charlton Heston appears briefly in Beneath the Planet of the Apes, I think it was for the express purpose of killing him off, as was his wish.
