Fastlane and She Spies.

They launched a whole bunch of really slick, really expensive looking shows in the early 2000s and not one of em stuck around.

reply

I believe She Spies was one of the first run syndication shows created during that time. First run syndication then collapsed in the early 2000s. The Bachelorette started in the early 2000s (2003 I think) and I feel like those things are connected. IMHO The Bachelorette was the beginning of the end of American culture. I watched some of it but after two seasons my faith in humanity had been destroyed. Many, many people watch The Bachelorette (and The Bachelor) and I AVOID ALL OF THEM.

reply

Yeah, that's when reality television took off huge for sure. Super huge ratings, super cheap to produce.

reply

Exactly. No need to hire actors, even. People will humiliate themselves on screen for free, just for the chance to be on a reality show! Disposable: no one is going to go back and watch seasons 2 and 3 of The Bachelorette. When I was looking this up, years ago, I read some things that suggested first run syndication collapsed because of the fin-syn rule, which had something to do with networks not being able to own the shows they showed, or something like that. So other companies would produce the shows, and then the networks would license them to show them. And so when the fin-syn rule changed, the networks were able to make as much programming in-house as they desired. I think that makes sense with reality shows: the networks can produce them, in-house, for cheap, and they can fill many hours of programming without having to pay other companies for pre-existing syndicated content. So it's cheaper for them to produce a lot of their own disposable reality shows, than to license shows produced by other people.

Eerie,Indiana 1991. Never got a chance. TV Guide labeled it a "Can't Miss" in its Fall preview. Was always getting pre-empted. Remember that term?

A couple more that come to mind

Now and again, I thought this was the best new show of the season when this aired and was surprised when they cancelled it.

John Doe, Unfortunately it left it on a cliffhanger and the mystery of John Does past is never revealed.

Touching evil, Jeffrey Donovan before Burn notice. A great show that was cancelled because the network felt the tone was too dark.

reply

Maybe The Honeymooners. It wasn’t cancelled by the network but by Gleason himself because he felt they had made all the stories they needed to.
