I am becoming increasingly frustrated with movies that have low dialogue but have loud music/sfx.

I've made a post about this before on these boards but damn it it's driving me insane. I just want to watch a film where I can hear the dialogue without sound effects and music busting my speakers. It's driving me bananas, bonkers, up the wall, 6s and 7s, nuts and any other term associated with frustration.

reply

you are preaching to the choir. i watched underwater recently and couldn't hear a thing they were saying.

reply

This has been a problem the last 10 years or so. I don't know what kind of sound mixing Hollywood is doing these days.

reply

Music today is obviously tuned for phones. So they have exaggerated bass and whatnot to compensate tiny tinny phone speakers. Movies are probably too.

reply

That's what ruined Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

reply

I could make a long list of movies that were ruined for me because of this.

reply

It's just, I watched it very recently, and kept thinking, this would be so much better without all loudness and bs-fx.

reply

My son watched it just fine. The movie was weak tho'. Also happened in Frozen 2. These movies are simply not needed.

reply

I'm hearin ya. Very frustrating

reply

You would think the dialogue would be louder and everything else lower if we were given an option.

reply

Yes!

reply

Where the hell did these sound editors learn their trade?

reply

Hear, hear! (Ha.)

I don't know why the sound techs on movies, and shows, have been doing this. It's like a bunch of them all of a sudden don't realise that hearing the dialogue is one of the most critical aspects of watching and understanding.

A related annoying newish phenomenon is everything on the screen being so dark, you can't make out what's happening.

reply

Do these people not go home and watch movies themselves to realize that movies are doing this? I don't know how they haven't realized this yet.

reply

I don't know. You'd think these would be part of the basics in their education 🤷‍♀️

reply

I got tinnitus in my ear about 10 years ago and I thought I was losing my hearing really bad because I kept putting the volume louder. I could hear the music and sound effects but I thought my ear wasn't picking up the tone of a voice. But that's when I realized I could hear people talk to me perfectly fine and this also wasn't an issue when I was listening to music.

reply

I'd say that in modern Hollywood movies NOT hearing the dialogue is one of the most critical aspects of watching and appreciating. 😄

reply

Don't know if you watch the walking dead but being to dark to make out what's going on is beginning to be a big problem !!

reply

I'm with you and evidently most viewers are
The characters are mumbling so you turn up the volume and WHAM!! EPIC EXPLOSION your neighbor can probably hear

I mostly just use subs now when they are available and keep the volume at about 50

reply

I don't know what's so hard about making the dialogue louder and the sfx/music lower. I'd definitely accept that.

reply

Yeah that is so annoying. I find myself constantly turning the volume up and down. My tv's volume is 1-100 and sometimes I'm going up to 100 for quiet dialogue then instantly back down to 25-30 when music or effects come on.

Sometimes I just give up and put the closed captioning on, which isn't ideal either.

reply

now a staple in docs too. totally irrelevant pot banging background over what would be interesting content.

reply

Yeah. It's really bad when you try to watch these movies in an apartment, or in a house where people are sleeping. You can either miss a lot of the dialogue, or wake your neighbors, housemates when an action scene comes up.

I find myself watching movies with captions on or sometimes through headphones. Living in an apartment, I can't make too much noise or I'll end up getting kicked out.

reply

I hate wearing headphones when I'm watching a movie. Having something on/in my ears for such a long time annoys me. I might just have to use captions.

reply

Sorry, you'll have to speak up.

reply

If I did, you would think I was Kowalski.

When he first started posting I used to think of Vanishing Point, now I think of this: -

reply

I have no idea what that is.

Penguins of Madagascar (spinoff from the Madagascar franchise). Apologies, I have a five year old daughter, so some of my viewing habits reflect this.
