Robin Hood (1991)
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)

Someone brought this up. I had no idea that there was a Robin Hood movie with Uma Thurman.

reply

This was the English version, less 'Hollywood'. To be honest, I didn't remember Uma Thurman was there. It was Patrick Bergin the one that stole the show.

For what matters, if you haven't watched it, give it a try. It was a bit low budget, and you notice it during the action scenes. But it's a very enjoyable version. The iMDB score doesn't do it justice.

Uma was really great as Marion.

Despicable Me (2010)

This was a recent baker's dozen as well and my contribution was:

She's All That (1999)
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

reply

I was wondering if any of us had done a post like this. No one mentioned it until now.

reply

It's funny because Armageddon/Deep Impact and Prestige/Illusionist were always obvious to me but I didn't realize how many others there were!

reply

Volcano and Dante's Peak were the same year

1, A classic pair is Dr Strangelove, Fail Safe (both 1964)

2. 2019's Manson-fest between OUATIH, Charlie Says, eps of Mindhunter Season 2 is worth noting.

3. Not *exactly* the same time, but leading up to The Matrix there was a raft of films with the same basic 'wake up' plot: Thirteenth Floor, Dark City, Existenz. Before it came out The Matrix was pre-snarked at by hipsters as 'the Kung Fu one'.

4. Braveheart, Rob Roy (both 1995)

5. 54, Last Days of Disco (both 1998)

The '90s had a lot of this parallel development stuff.

Dr. Strangelove and Fail-Safe are probably the best movies out of all the examples so far. Usually similar movies coming out around the same time are campy movies, not classics.

The Abyss 1989
DeepStar Six 1989
Leviathan 1989
The Rift 1989
Lords of the Deep 1989
The Evil Below 1989

Lewis Abernathy co-wrote DeepStar Six. He also started in Titanic, another movie about water, which was directed by James Cameron who also directed The Abyss. Look at me finding a connection.

Also, welcome to the site.

I think the reason for this bunch of undersea sci-fi horror movies is the prolonged production of Abyss. Other studios assumed Cameron is remaking Aliens with submarines and sniffed an opportunity to release their movies first.

That’s a really good point: the dogs sniffing each other’s assholes and trying to cum first. The Abyss is a production logistical near-miracle, filmed in a HUGE water tank on a soundstage. While it had 1 actor from Aliens, Michael Biehn, it had zero in common with Cameron’s vastly superior improvement on Alien, with 1 exception. Both The Abyss and Aliens were science-fiction/action films. Alien was only horror set in outer space. So the wannabe Cameron piggy-backers did horror (intended) rip-offs, while Jim stuck with science fiction, and also pushed the boundaries of CGI.
