Does anyone still write reviews on IMDB?

I've noticed a huge drop in reviews and ratings of the reviews since they killed off their message boards. It's probably exactly what they wanted.

I always thought writing reviews for free so a site can profit or off it, even indirectly was odd. Let alone doing it for a site that killed it's own message boards pissing many people off.

No, I don't. And no, the reviews dropping off have nothing to do with the message boards. It's because the reviews section has completely lost credibility. It's completely overrun with trolls and plants who game the ratings system with fake reviews and mass downvote the ones they disagree with. Sometimes they also target specific accounts for mass downvotes. This is why I deleted my account. I was posting reviews for a year and then overnight, someone gave each one of my reviews five downvotes. This is when I knew that there was no point in reviewing anymore, since most people looking at reviews are trolls and plants.

Yeah, just look at the Captain Marvel page. It’s crazy

I honestly hate IMDb since they shut down the boards but I still begrudgingly use it for movie info and keeping track of stuff I've watched and how I rated it. I read reviews but I definitely take them with a grain of salt.

I like some of the trivia but there isn't much on there that interests me. I find message boards and threads more useful than reviews and ratings which are either fake or written by hardcore fans who would love it no matter how bad it is.

reply

If you like trivia... check out the trivia section of Jackie (2016) on IMDb.

reply

It does lack credibility. Especially with smaller films you can tell the reviews are written by the director, cast etc

I think removing the boards though did have an impact many people left altogether deleting their reviews in the process and any trivia ect that also may posted

I used to visit the site a few times a day to check the boards now I might only use it a couple of times a month.

This. Well, maybe a little bit of both you and the OP's beliefs, but definitely this. Back in the day, reviews had a minimum character count and had to be approved before appearing on the site. Nowadays, you can just type "this movie is r suck it gay waiste of moneys lol 0/10" and it can even go as far as being featured on the main page. I seriously don't understand how the featured review system works. The featured review for Get Out for a solid month was some racist POS listing how awful black people are with zero context of the film, yet IMDb saw it as feature-worthy. What a joke.

i agree

I'd guess it's only Woodyanders there now...that fella will likely never quit

You can write reviews if you have a login and password. I use IMDB to look up films and casts.

reply

I used to log into IMDb daily. Since they closed the boards I have not logged in once.

reply

The message board is closed but like I wrote you can still look up films and casts.

reply

"you can still look up films and casts"

Yes I do that also. But you don't have to log in to do that.

reply

You can although a bug bear I have with that is they don't show era appropriate photos for the film. So for example if you looked up Star Wars to see who played Han Solo you might see a current day photo of Harrison Ford. Maybe not a big deal if you know the character name but sometimes you miss the character name and only have an image to go on.

reply

Yeah, should have been a screenshot from the movie itself.

reply

That's right.

reply

Yeah the shills are at it 24/7.

reply

I've written maybe 5 bit I haven't done it in years. It just gets lost amongst other ones.
