My Brilliant Career - 7/10 (I also liked Chez Nouz)
Secrets & Lies - 7.5/10 (I'm a fan of Mike Leigh)

reply

I very much liked The Gods Must Be Crazy

reply

I saw Secrets and Lies when it was new in theater. Very intriguing, but I wouldn't recommend it. A rather searing family drama. Not what a lot of people might consider Entertainment.

Crossing Delancey was a real charmer. Reminds me of 84 Charing Cross Road, mostly because they were released in a similar time. And maybe that Cross thing.

reply

I didn’t know we were just suggesting entertaining films. I love quality films even if the stories are uncomfortable and disturbing.

reply

While you make a good point, I sometimes think literally if I suggested a film to most people I know and the movie was something like Secrets & Lies or The English Patient, I'd don't think they would like me very much. Some films are entertaining even if they aren't light and uplifting.
Btw, I haven't seen S&L in ages. I just remember how unhappy the family seemed with everything in their lives. I'm sure it's a quality film.

reply

Yeah I add a warning when recommending “heavy” films. I remember putting on I, Tonya fir a family movie night. I thought ice skating was a light theme, but it ended up being lots of scenes of domestic violence and family disfunction.

reply

Crossing Delancey is s wonderful film. October Sky was motivational.

reply

October Sky is one of Jake Gyllenhaal's best films imo. Really underrated.

Secret and Lies is considered Mike Leigh's masterpiece I think it's probably his most viewed film. I'd say Career Girls is a film of his that needs to be seen more people very underrated.

Babette's Feast is one of the more loved best foreign Oscar films.

My Brilliant Career is a good one. It be a even bigger film today if released today imo.

Adventureland is a film that doesn't get enough love like it should. Considering it has a starry cast, not a massive fan of it's ending but it's not one of those cliche coming of age films. Great soundtrack too.

Pride is another one of those British goodfeel films that should have been a bigger hit then it was. Wonderful performances across the board but barely anyone went to see it.

The one that jumps out at me is Hombre.
Newman is his cool enigmatic figure, but Diane Cilento and Richard Boone really ramp up the Acting chops.
Great acting, great directing, I don't know what, but Paul plays it very cool while the other actors have to generate interest.
I'm not too surprised it isn't heralded like other great Westerns, but it's a very taut little drama, very well done.
If Martin Ritt isn't the director, I'll be surprised.

reply

True to the OP as I think I've heard of 4 and seen one, Joe (1970) but so long ago I don't even remember what I thought of it! Unforgettable ending, though.

reply

I'm such a loser - I haven't seen any on this list.

reply

Allaby's list. Only heard of Les Misérables because of the Broadway play, not the film. The guy must be a professional critic! No, I bet most critics haven't seen as many films as him!

reply

You are NO loser Dear Lady, please don't say that
You are held in very high esteem❤️

I missed most of them too and I'm clearly a huge loser LOL😎

reply

Start winning, GE

"Mr President, please no more winning!"

reply

So stop being a Loser and watch some of these films ! Haha !

It's a very eclectic list. I've only seen a handful of them myself.

reply

Okay, okay. I'll work on it. Some of these must be available to stream free somewhere.

reply

Johnny Got his Gun deserves a Criterion Collection release. Really underrated adaption.

Loneliness of a long Distance Runner is a British Classic, should be seen by everyone.

Joe is a bit like a early prototype of Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver in a way. Peter Boyle is excellent in it.

Buffalo 66 is a great little indie.

reply

Yes. "Joe" heavily influenced "Taxi Driver" and "Falling Down" (maybe Taxi Driver had a little more influence on that).

reply

Brassed Off (1996) is one that comes to my mind. But maybe more people have seen it than I think.

reply

Fantastic film, far better then the following year's Full Monty which became a smash and much loved British comedy. Brassed Off has more heart and laughs in it and a amazing performance from Pete Postlehwaite. The Ending always gets to me.

reply

Yes, the ending is pretty emotional and Pete Postlethwaite was great in this. I don't think I've ever watched The Full Monty.

reply

The Rape of the Vampire (1968)

reply

Meantime by Mike Leigh

reply

Rough start, but I liked this movie very much. I think I might have seen all of Mike Leigh's movies, one of my favorite directors.

reply

You have a favourite?

reply

"Naked" ... I also like "Nuts in May" which might still be on YouTube.. I liked how it describes modern life in a way, co-existing with growing populations, and also the phrase many like to use "Do whatever you want as long as it doesn't affect me", but that's almost impossible.

reply

Naked is great. It's been a while since I've seen Nuts in May. Will have to give it another watch. All or Nothing is up there with my favourites too.

reply

"All or Nothing" was very good, I liked that one a lot, might be my 3rd favorite of his.

reply

Cloverfield

I was surprised to find how how many people hate that film though. But I run into a lot of folks who have never heard of it.

reply

There is a near-masterpiece French-Canadian film I saw called Orderers (1974). https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071949/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 Less than 1000 votes on IMDb but a damn great movie.
