Films that terrified you as a kid

I love horror films but as a kid, it was kids films and tv that scared the sh!t out of me... and still do in some cases!
The main culprits were:
* return to oz (the screaming heads)
* Willy wonka (gene wilder)
*worzel gummage (angry head)
* the original Moomins

Also traumatised by the horse one swamp in never ending story ๐Ÿ˜ถ

What were your nightmares made of? ...

I grew up in the "dark ages" and my parents never took me to see any scary movies, not even marginally creepy ones. I saw Hitchcock's "The Birds" as a young adult, but to this day it creeps me out. "Jaws" was a bit unnerving, too.

When I was a kid I saw this film on late night tv that scared the bejezus out of me. I had to look it up to find out its name... but it was William Castles "Homicidal"...
Strange film for its time..
I'd also rate Psycho and Jaws as scaring the crap out of me.

The Day After (1983) https://moviechat.org/tt0085404/The-Day-After

Nuclear scare was still a big thing and my young brain was way too impressionable to be watching that.

That one stayed with me for years, after I saw it. There is no way I'm rewatching that.

G'mork, Neverending Story
Zelda, Pet Sematery

Beetlejuice (1988).

reply

Yeah. But looking back, what's so scary about that?

reply

I grew up in the 70s and early 80s watching whatever movie was the "Movie of the Week" and the Saturday afternoon "Creature Feature" shown on WKBD Detroit.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark 1973
Trilogy of Terror 1975
Salem's Lot miniseries 1979
The Abominable Dr. Phibes 1971
Night of the Living Dead 1968

These movies traumatized me as a kid!

Some other TV movies that played in the 80โ€™s that were also pretty scary were:

Donโ€™t Go to Sleep (1982)
Gargoyles (1972)
Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981)
Burnt Offerings (1976)

I know this sounds crazy but I remember seeing the Fulci film City of the Living Dead (1980) on regular tv on a Sunday morning when I was a kid. If my memory is correct it must have been heavily edited.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)

That damn Childcatcher frightened me so much that I refuse to watch it to this day(and I warn all my friends with kids off it as well!)

reply

Yes! And what was the one with Tony, Tia and the nice man in the RV. That one was kind of spooky too.
