I FINALLY found my dog!!!

It happened last Tuesday evening. Didn't expect it. Randomly ran a search on "shepherd mix California" and up he came. Thought I'd probably get a female, but it being the right dog was more important than anything else, certainly than gender.

When I read about him I thought "Ok, he really might be the one." Called his rescuer, talked. She sent me more photos and a few videos. Thought about it, called her back and asked if I could drive over *that evening* to meet him, and if it looked good, if I'd be able to drive back home with him. She said yes!

Within an hour I was driving 100 miles to meet him, and brought him home that night.

I have no fenced yard here, and there are chickens, ducks, and a cat, so my dog had to be cool with all of these things. No small feat to find! But we found one another, at last.

He was rescued from a very bad situation, chained up in a desert with 49 other dogs, cats, and a cock-fighting ring. No one knew anything about him, his name, age, history, nothing.

He's amaaaaaaazing! He's also a hero, which I won't go into now because this is already a long post. I'm SO HAPPY!!!

Virtual hug for adopting a needy dog. I think you made your decision solely from the pictures and videos and just knew it was the right match. Sometimes you just know.

reply

You're right, I was at 98% looking at the photos and videos. All that really needed to happen was for us to meet for the remaining 2%.

He's older than I'd wanted, having been through so much animal heartbreak. I wanted a 2-5 year old and they're guessing him to be around 6-7. But, when it's right, it's right.

I'll give him a hug from you :)

reply

I think he's going to end up acting younger than his actual age since he's never had a proper life. So many new experiences and adventures for him to look forward too!

reply

He's a cute boy
Best wishes and happy to hear it:)

reply

Thanks, Shogie :)

He is a very handsome guy, and his personality totally matches up with his good looks!

We are a *perfect* match ❣️

reply

Long post, schlong post. Give us the story of that hero nice lady! We NEED a HERO!!!😉

reply

Heh, too right, we're all in need of HEROES!!

Ok, so when he was found, the rescuers soon realised he was fine off leash and was one of the first dogs they got to. He escorted all of the other dogs from where they were unchained, to the rescue vans, comforting and reassuring them all the way until they got into the unfamiliar vans!

WHAT A GUY!!!

reply

Well worth the extra paragraph! You are both very lucky😀🍀

reply

Thanks! He deserves all teh props! 👍

I maintain I'm the lucky one, but I can go with both of us being very lucky :)

R_Kane breaks into a Happy Snoopy dance in joy for his friend, Catbookss! Scratch him bitty head for me, Cat, followed with an energetic tummy rub.

reply

Head scratched, and tummy given a good rub on your behalf, R_K! Mister says he enjoyed your Happy Snoopy Dance 😀

reply

I wish you a lot of fuzzy doggy love with your new buddy! ❤🐶🐶🐶❤ He seems like a sweetheart!

reply

❣️

Lots of fuzzy puppy love is being had over here! He really is a sweetheart. He's kind-hearted, gentle, and isn't above a good playful roughhousing :D

reply

It's a shame I can't give him some warm Stratego love in person. I'll try to send it to him telepathically!🤗

reply

Outstanding! Well done, and congratulations, Cat!

😎

reply

Thanks, ... I guess. But seeing as your only response to me when I posted back in October that my dog had *died*, and I was in a world of hurt, was "Buck up, buttercup" (😐), I don't know why you'd care and congratulate me now.

reply

Sorry about that. I misunderstood. I thought he was lost. I'm truly glad that he's alive and you found him.

😎

reply

Come on, you knew she'd died. If you didn't bother reading my OP back then (probably was the case), I replied to your "buttercup" post, making is abundantly clear that's what happened. You never bothered to respond.

This is a new dog I just got last week. Which you'd also know if you'd read my OP.

reply

It's out to the woodshed for me!

😎

reply

You could have just owned up and told the truth.

Even better would have been to respond to my reply and apologise back then for being so insensitive instead of ignoring me.

reply

Okay, take it easy on me. I probably had a senior moment. My memory is not what it used to be. Sorry.

😎

reply

All right. Apology accepted. Pax.

reply

Thank you, and pax vobis cum.

reply

You're always a sweetie

reply

Thanks, Squiffy.

Don't know a lot of women do ya?

reply

I thought you meant me and dogs 😂

I'm not big on holding grudges, but it was an extremely insensitive thing to say when she'd just died, without apologising. It was one of the most painful times in my life. Probably the most; I'd lost all of my family members not long before.

Anyway, water under the bridge now.

That's what the rescue group called him. No one knew anything about him, his name, age, anything.

Through trial and error I lucked on either his real name or nickname, which is Mijo. So, Mijo it is :)

reply

[deleted]

It's Spanish for "my son," or "my dear boy." An endearment.

reply

[deleted]

Un poquito. I'm going to have to learn more for him!

Mijo and mija are contractions of mi hijo/a, but commonly used, along with mijito/mijita. I'm sure I'll be calling him mijito too, along with Mister :)

reply

Very nice! I thought you had lost your dog and found him but this is even better. He totally looks like a “Captain”!

reply

A fine name 'Captain'
I like the pic where his tongue is out and he seems to be smiling:)
Cute boy...he seems a bit of a trickster!

reply

Indeed he does! Careful with that website, it can break your heart. Can’t adopt but Im gonna send them a few bucks at least.

reply

Thats very kind
Donations are welcome i'm sure
Good of you mike...quite nice of you buddy

reply

They sent me a nice thank you card. Magnificent looking cover dog on here!

That doggy is a beauty!

reply

He (or she?) is a beauty!

reply

Aww, you are a SWEETHEART!! Thank you so much for sending a few bucks their way! ❤️

They do great work. It's a whole network of rescuers who come in, get the dogs (cats too), take them to vets, and bring them into their homes to help them out!

The woman who'd taken Mijo in had 3 other rescues, plus a mamma and a litter of pups. And, she gave me a bag of high quality kibble, 2 cans of good food, some treats she knows he likes, a leash, and 2 rolls of doggie bags!

When I asked her how much I owed her to adopt him, she said whatever I could afford. So sweet!! All they want is for these animals to be in good, loving homes. So I paid her as much as I could, to pay it forward so they can help other dogs, and cats.

The one thing that really sucked about looking for my dog was seeing *so many* dogs in need of loving homes, knowing I could only take one 😢. But, I've been involved in dog rescue myself, and know the only things that've kept me sane are these two sayings: "Do what you can" and "One dog at a time." Otherwise it's too heartbreaking and overwhelming.

Thank you again, Mike!!!

reply

He's not shown any sign of being a trickster ... YET!

reply

Totally understandable why you'd think that, and that'd be great too!

They called him Captain because he'd escorted and reassured all of the other dogs they rescued, like a captain would do. But, I stumbled across his real name, or the nickname his first (good) owner called him, which is Mijo! (That's "my son" in Spanish, if you don't already know.) So his official name now is Mijo :)

German shepherds are always happiest when they have a job to do. Keep that boy busy! Wishing you many years of happiness with your new friend 🙂

reply

As it turns out, he's not a shepherd mix! I discovered he's actually a Carolina Dog, also known as the American Dingo. Still, no worries about keeping him busy, as all dogs need to have their minds occupied. There's a hiking trail close to where I live (he's a *great* trail dog!), and a beach not too far away too.

Thank you for those wishes! I didn't have my last dog (also a rescue, and an older one) nearly long enough, so am hoping to have many years with this guy!

reply

Despite all the odds..congratulations

reply

Thank you, Croft :)
