Do you think Imdb lost much traffic since they dropped the board?

I am Personally over the moon I found this site because I used to go to Imdb every day to check what people were talking about when it comes to film and TV. I was very loyal for over 10 years, however since they dropped the forum I really stopped going and for film reviews I use rotten tomatoes. I wonder if I am one of many and if Imdb lost much traffic, if they did I cannot say I feel sorry for them because they did not give us a lot of time before shutting down their forum..Come to think of it I felt it was a bit of a bit disrespectful towards so many users. Wonder if in the long run they will regret their decision..

I imagine they were probably paying too much for the increased bandwidth and moderating the forums, and I guess that traffic was more expensive than any ad revenue that it would generate.

reply

Not that it matters now, but i wonder if given the option would posters have paid a small subscription fee to use and preserve the message boards over there.

reply

I said this at the time. I would pay a yearly subscription for access. Say $10.99.

reply

Yes, I might have done so too at the time. They probably would have made a ton of money being as established as they were. Although starting to charge money for something that was always free would also make people leave in droves so who knows if it would have worked.

Do you think people would pay for Facebook if they made it subscription based? I wouldn't but I'm not on Facebook.

reply

I would not pay for Facebook, though I am on there every day for a bit.

reply

That's how you pay.

reply

Yes, nothing in life is free. It's like Spotify though, they make it worth while to go premium. So much advertising its gross in this world.
The data mining probably makes the most money. I was offered 50 bucks to put an app on my phone that tracked what I looked at for 30 days. Then you can delete it. Doesn't sound too bad right? But in the fine print it said that it didn't stop tracking you unless you contacted the company to get it removed. Deleting and uninstalling didn't remove it. Anyways, they are all so tricky about it. They bury everything in the TOS.

Sorry for the rant.

reply

I hate shady business practices like that.

reply

Ever hear of the app that made your phone be able to tell what commercials you see on TV? The phone would "listen" to what you were listening to on TV and record the data. Its insane. I'm pretty sure that doesn't exist anymore. Thank god. Too weird. Feels like spying and I'm not even a paranoid person.

reply

Now that you mention it, it does sound familiar. Crazy!

reply

Yeah, way too over the top!

reply

To be honest, I had hoped we were both misremembering the whole thing. But, no such luck! This is really scary:

reply

Are people still posting there? I thought the whole posting thing was gone

reply

Yeah, it is gone. I think they might still have support boards or something but not even sure on that.

reply

you still can post reviews

reply

I personally don't go there as often. I will go there to check to see what other movies "whoever it may be" were in if I can't think of it. I used to go straight there after almost every movie I watched to see what other people were saying and what other people thought. So definitely lost a lot of traffic from me, but I'm just one person.

I would love to know how many actual posters were active on the boards before they shut them down, just out of curiosity's sake.

Also I think there is a web site (although I'm not sure what it is) that tells the trends in traffic over periods of time for big websites like theirs.

reply

The traffic site is Alexa... And this isn't very helpful: https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/imdb.com

reply

Not very accurate you mean?

Edit..I just checked it out and it isn't very helpful. Thanks for reminding me what the site was though.

Oh yes! I never go there or Amazon. Jeff Bezos made a costly mistake when he abolished the message boards. I hope he rots in hell.

I found the info on episodes, their dates, trivia, actor info etc etc etc basically everything has dropped significantly. I don't use it anymore as a resource either. It's becoming more outdated and inaccurate every day. They are trying to fill the gap with fan mades and rehashed old news but it's a sinking ship.

reply

I can honestly say that I don't go there to IMDb as often as I use to.
The message boards were the big draw. I only go there once in a while. I like to check reviews...
Sometimes it is just to look at actors and their filmography.
It isn't the same any longer. I really don't care though.....
WE HAVE MovieChat!!!!!!
Olivergbyrne, I can only hope that you will join in on the discussions. I also have hope that you will help in the growth of this site. The way to do that is to spread the word! We finally have a great movie message board site that is actually similar to IMDb.

reply

I definitely will. Thank you :)

reply

It's only my guess, but I think it's quite possible IMDb has seen a drop in traffic since the boards closed.

One of the reasons I say this is because people aren't even contributing as much information to the factual pages anymore, as they once did.

I still sometimes consult the information page of a movie there, to find out things like shooting location, cast list, etc.

I'm lately running into more and more movies where some of this info is actually missing.

Since it was mostly contributor reliant -- and contributors were often the same people who actually actively posted on the boards too -- it looks a lot like they've taken their helpfulness elsewhere. Many did say this is what they would do.

IMDb relied on its users to build the "database" in its own name. When it shat all over those same users, yet still expected them to supply data, it was a shitty move.

I think that there's definitely been a considerable drop in imdb.com traffic since the message boards closed. It's unfortunate, but I think it's something that was bound to happen, and had to happen, due to all the "flaming" that frequently took place on the imdb.com message boards. Had there been some real moderators who really got firm with chronic "flamers" and "trollers" to the point of giving them a "3-strikes-and-you're-out" warning and banning them if they were persistent, the message boards on imdb.com might still be open right now.
