In Defense of the Movie Theater: Movie theaters have long been underappreciated, so let’s give them their due before it’

I think most of you have read the article I am referring to:

https://go2cinema.com/stories/in-defense-of-the-movie-theater-7

It has been trending on Reddit the past couple of hours:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/703adx/in_defense_of_the_movie_theater_movie_theaters/

A lot of the comments are suggesting that cinema are simply no longer worth going to. This is either because home entertainment setup has become cheap or that the cinema quality has become low.

I really disagree with the latter part. I think that the cinemas have become cleaner than ever. I have never been in a screening with a baby (or at least never noticed a baby in a screening) [this is often quoted reason for hating cinema in Reddit; how odd].

Whats your experience going to the cinema when compared 10, 20 years ago to now? and what could be done to improve it?

All the theaters near me are fantastic, but then again, this is L.A. We take our movies very seriously around here.

reply

Lots of good points in that article.

"It’s increasingly becoming harder to find public spaces where diverse groups of people spend their leisure time together"

Hadn't thought about it, but this is true, and unfortunate.

Sound quality, big screen, the experience of viewing a film in a theatre -- all good and valid points.

I would hate for theatres to go the way of bookstores, but the reality is I haven't gone for years. The main reason being there are so few new releases I have any interest in seeing. For the few I do, I can wait. I'm not into the "blockbusters," couldn't care less about the many franchises, so there's no incentive for me to go. Plus now the price of tickets is too high.

reply

I think theaters are better than ever, to be honest. Every multiplex near my house has reserved seating with extra-wide, reclining leather seats, cupholders, and big aisles that allow people to move in and out without forcing others to get up. Sound quality and picture quality have also improved. Even the choice of snacks and beverages far surpass what was available in the past. I can't speak to the cost of the experience in today's dollars vs 20 -30 years ago, but I think in all other respects, theaters are at their high point.

reply

At their high point technically and physically. At their lowest point in terms of quality films, respectful audiences, and ticket prices

reply

So, infrastructure: grand.

Program content, social context and value: can't think of a pejorative that is adequately rank.

Well said, Naps. Completely agree.

reply

People never change so there will always be people disrupting other audience member's enjoyment. The thing that has changed is the price of a movie ticket and concessions vs the quality of the movie. There isn't much originality or good movies being made in the past couple of years. I still go to the movies but I wish there were better movies available to see. I don't mind paying more as long as the movie is worth the cost.

reply

Sometimes it does seem like every other movie is a remake or a sequel.

reply

What was the last good movie you saw in a theater ?

reply

The Theory of Everything

reply

This was a really good movie. Although it seems this would be a good movie no matter where you saw it.
I haven't seen a good movie in the theater since Memento.

I became very opposed to seeing new movies because they always seem to disappointing me.
Maybe it's because I can never seem to pick the right one.

Looks like you might have a little better taste.

reply

[deleted]

I didn't care for Inception either.

I thought Memento was original and thought provoking.
It really kept you guessing and trying to figure out the story.
I don't you Dazed, but we will have a long, long talk about this.
It probably won't be pleasant.

reply

In my home town,we already have a good theater, cheap tickets...but i don't have the time to go to cinema...only on "special ocassions".

reply

I feel similar to Dazed with this comment: "I like the big screen experience but other people always ruin it and tickets are too expensive for that not to matter."

People have become measurably ruder over the last ten or twenty years. Ten years ago EVEN cineplex audiences were better behaved than they are now.

reply

I've been to 4 movies at the theater in the last 10 years or so.
I have a 70" TV and a projector and an 8 channel surround system.

Every time I go to the theater I always ask why.
To me it's just not worth the hassle of dealing with other people and the lines at the theater.

20 years ago was a better experience only because the above options weren't available to consumers or were
too much money.

reply

Yeah, and the last time I went to a theater an usher appeared just before the start of the feature advising patrons of where the exits were and to be vigilant as far as suspicious other patrons. It can be a life or death choice these days to go to a theater.

reply

I have never been to a movie where they warned me about suspicious patrons.
Please don't tell me you live in Chicago or KC.

That alone is a reason to stay at home.

reply

Actually, a considerably smaller town but it's still a sign of the times.

reply

That is indeed a sign of the times.
I really hope this is more of the local theater being vigilant vs. the norm for your community.
Although now days I don't know where you would go.
