Definitely true. I remember details and scenes, but not always the full plot or how they ended.
Watching the new Twin Peaks really shows me how many details I forgot from the original, although I vividly remember certain parts of it.
But it's kind of the same with your real life. You remember that one special Christmas vividly like it was yesterday, you remember the smell and sound of the pine needles crunching under your feet hiking in the woods on summer vacation, you remember the best and worst times, but you don't remember every person you've ever met or every grocery store trip you ever made or every time you washed the dishes.

What's there to consider? Obviously people forget stuff especially if a lot of time has passed. I do remember what movies I really enjoyed and those that I didn't. I generally do multiple viewings on the movies that I really loved. Even with those, I forget some things so I watch them again to refresh my memory. No big deal.

Just keeping things accurate.
I think that I watch too many movies while doing other things these days. It's just too easy because of streaming. There are too many movies now a days to start, and there is no effort required to watch one. Going to store to rent a movie, or going to the theatre, usually meant that it was something that you wanted to see and you were willing to make an investment in the movie. If I actually go to a theatre I will remember it, but if I watch something on Netflix that is just on because I want something to watch, chances are I'm going to forget most of it.

I was going to post something similar, Ssl. While the only other thing I do when watching either a movie or show is go to sleep, streaming does make it much easier to forget what you've watched, because there are so many options and it's easy to watch a lot of things within a relatively short time frame.
Add to this binge-watching shows, and it's very easy to forget details, or not particularly notice some to begin with.
It is true that going to see or renting a movie requires more effort -- and money -- so it makes sense that one's focus is greater under those circumstances than in streaming on Netflix, for instance. Most so in a theatre, because unless you're also on your phone whilst watching it, all of your attention is on the screen.
