It’s true, Carey Mulligan is not hot enough for this role

A film critic implied this, and Mulligan hit him on Twitter and there was a general cancel culture pile-on. But he was absolutely right.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I don’t endorse when trolls complain that other female protagonists are not attractive enough. Even if it’s a romcom or whatever, I’m fine with any woman playing a role in an actual romance. That happens in real life, people who aren’t super conventionally attractive still find love.

But when the premise is that you are going out as eye candy, as bait to reel in super shallow d-bags, then you need to be able to present yourself as the kind of woman who is so hot as to be able to lure jerks like that to their doom. And Kerry Mulligan is not that, especially not now. It just strains credulity too much.

I’m not throwing stones from a glass house. If I were an actor, I would not try out for a role like the one Ryan Gosling played in CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE. The script clearly calls for an actor who has ridiculous washboard abs (that a gobsmacked Emma Stone remarks “look Photoshopped”) and I do not have those. If I played the role for some ridiculous reason, and a critic called out the fact that I don’t have those abs, I would not cry and whine about it. I should have known better, and so should Mulligan.

Cassie says at one point to Al (the rapist) that Al may have trouble remembering her because she wasn't attractive enough to be noticed back in med school. I think it's better for her to be closer to a regular girl.

Let's say they cast Margot Robbie instead. Then some would complain "How can someone who looks like a supermodel struggle to find a higher paying job, and be stuck at home with her parents at age 30?" Surely some rich "sugar daddy" or some rich boyfriend would take care of her.

And if you've seen Margot Robbie all made up, many men in that club would not believe someone that looked like her was always alone and drunk. Almost looks like a setup. Carrie Mulligan would be more believable in that situation, wouldn't she? And in the end it doesn't really matter much what they looked like. Cassie's goal was to prove that acting drunk, out of it, and vulnerable late night at a club would almost always equal getting preyed upon.

I do not find it inconceivable for someone with full hair and makeup done and looks like this:

would be completely ignored every night at a club.

She looks like de-aged grandma imho.

She looked way better in Drive. 10 year age difference is no joke.

reply

Yeah, I don’t know if she smokes etc. or it’s just genes, but she is clearly not one of those people who ages slowly and gracefully.

reply

She had 2 children.

reply

She had them do what? Dry out her skin with hairdryers every night and install some saddle bags?

reply

Atomic, you make a strong argument. But that’s what people should have done in response to the film critic, not denounce him as a misogynist and try to cancel him.

reply

Actually that would precisely be believeable and would have made more sense in the context of the film.

Even though it may be a spectrum, Mulligan at the bottom and Robbie at the top - there are surely more suitable candidates in the middle who both look more realistic for the part and are stronger in the acting department than Carey too.

you only need a real basic level of hotness for this ... basic symetry and a pulse ...
And the dirtbags will be like "any port in a storm" and " free fuck right here ..."
or "that there s a 5-beers date "

Weird the story was framed as a volley in the culture wars. The more obvious reading is that she was annoyed someone criticized her looks. Which is understandable when your appearance is your livelihood & you're not even ugly. Like when a virile pro athlete has to take criticism from a couch potato sports writers. It's absurd but that's the gig.

And he didn't even say she was ugly, just that she wasn't the "femme fatale" type. Maybe he could have couched it in terms of that old Newsradio bit, pretty vs. cute:

It’s true, she came across as petulant, vain, thin-skinned. It would have been much more classy to just ignore it.

She is hot enough for the feminists yet the feminist are hating this film.

reply

Are they? I did not have that impression.

Made it recently quoting them

reply

you quoted one article from a twitterer called Ayesha A. Siddiqi
according to her website is
""is a LA based writer and creative strategist specializing in trend forecasting.
Called a "wunderkind producer" and "cultural oracle", ""

sound like a loudmouth with little expertise in a lot of areas to me ,
not a feminist , that was just the subject she was broadcasting her worthless opinion on, on that day.

reply

Many feminists agree with her she is not the only one

reply

You can't compare her to Gosling in Crazy, Stupid, Love. Because he was a character that was supposed to be hot. She's not written like that. She's just a normal girl.

For the the Twitter guy to implied that she was not beautiful enough is really a low blow. Why would you criticize someone's look in a movie not about that? I'm against cancel culture for sure, but I can see why Mulligan respond to him like that.

Was she pretty enough to act as bait for those d-bags? Of course, men's standards are way lower than women's. You don't have to be pretty to be hit on in bars, you just have to be "available".

She's no Gal Gadot, yes, but she is beautiful.

reply

She's 35 – looks 45, playing someone who's meant to be 30. That was enough to take me out of the film. She just wasn't right for the part.

reply

This.

She looks better than what Juno Temple looks like now (and Juno is four years younger). I mention Juno because she's been sleazy in a far amount of movies, and this sort of role would have been right up her alley before she got too thin and haggard.

reply

I only know her from TED LASSO, where I thought she was not quite hot enough to be this influencer celebrity with a super good looking soccer star as a boyfriend. But I still think she looks better than Mulligan.

So it's true what they say: masturbation makes you blind!
