Things I learned about what the end of the world will look like

1. Even though "the road is blocked" because "a train derailed across the highway" and "this is the only highway north within 50 miles", don't worry, after some rocks fall from the sky, you'll be riding on an empty highway again with the problem of the blocked highway magically solved.

2. Even though most kids are capable of noticing the seriousness of the situation by their parents' actions, your kid will most likely go outside and look at the sky instead of packing his things.

3. Scientists are abysmal at calculating the impact point of the largest fragment. And when they say it'll impact "somewhere between North Africa and Europe", it'll actually impact in the UK.

4. The last day of Earth the bus lines will still drive normally.

5. The government will think they can secretly send you a message, even though everybody around you can hear those messages.

6. At one checkpoint they'll check your QR code, but at another one they won't.

7. If insulin is not in the bag, there's only one other place where it could be.

8. You can get a big plane to open its ass door if you yell loud enough.

9. Some teenagers will have a party and not at all care about the viru... umm... I mean... asteroid.

10. If a car stops in front of a small plane, the plane cannot go around it.

11. If a plane crashes, your kid will say "I don't wanna fly anymore!". This will get a laugh from everybody. Or maybe not.

12. Nobody from the passengers will bother checking if the pilots are dead, except for one true hero.

Have a really stupid child who cannot take off his seatbelt and get out of the car while your mum is getting dragged out by a nutter.

If you calculate how long it will take to get to the plane that will fly you to Greenland you still have time to waste so you can have a really long goodbye with your FIL.

Plus drive at 60mph which you can see on their speedometer when they are racing to the airport before the plane takes off. I don't know maybe it's the speed limit?

Don't get me wrong my anxiety watching this movie was high but more so over the stupid decisions made by the actions of the main characters.

They were driving a pickup. Its not like those things can move faster than that.

No it can’t. The wings could clip the truck trying that. The plane’s wheels are not fit for an extensive ride off the paved runway. Plus the plane needs to accelarate down enough runway to get lift, especially one as loaded up as that one was.

I thought this film took a very human approach to disaster reaction. People will and do make stupid decisions in the panic of the moment. Some kids may freeze up and stay bolted in their seat when they should run. City officials might force the bus lines to keep running because someone in the chain of command is a comet denier or a total incompetent.

Or because people who do not own a car still need to get around so they can prepare to survive.

Besides, the one bus we saw was clearly stated to be a military bus and was probably specifically created/vulunteered to drive people to shelters/loved ones before the end.

You're more likely to avoid these rocks falling from the sky if you go off road and drive among the trees for a bit.

(I think this works because the trees obscure the meteor's vision as it's aiming towards you...)

reply

The trees could slow down the meteor or deflect it, so yes trees actually help.

reply

"The trees could slow down a meteor". Trees.....meteor. A METEOR. No, just no.

reply

Yes. Meteors loose most of the speed in the atmosphere.

reply

It depends on how big it is and how fast it's going. But we're not talking about the atmosphere. You said 'trees'.

reply

Well duh. Its connected. When meteor is slowed down in atmpshere the kinetic force behind it is low enough that trees will have an impact on its trajectory.

reply

Not if they're anything bigger than a football. They are falling at very high speeds, and so they'd crash right through the trees!

reply

The ones in that scene did not seem to be that large. They certainly werent leaving large craters from the impact.

reply

Don't try defending that scene when it's raining asteroids. It looked like an Artillery Barrage from Ukraine war more than asteroid fragment impacts. The entire scene was silly.

reply

Plus seemingly all of the pieces of the comet will hit population centres and not the sea/Siberia/uninhabited forest/jungle/desert/tundra.

reply

Yes. The ones that get talked about. A fragment hitting in a wasteland is not news worthy.

reply

We see it hit non-poulated areas in the movie multiple times. The news channels will of course talk about populated areas first.

reply

The only reason a stupid movie like this gets remade again is because Gerard Butler is in it and he is cheap to hire

reply

Try enjoying movies. Life will be better.

reply

LoL… When something is trash deserves all the derision it gets….
I will enjoy a good movies not crap

reply

I wonder if 2012 was better than this.

reply

not sure we will have to wait til 2012 to find out.

reply

2012 was much better. i hated for almost half this movie the family are separated. in 2012 at least the family stick together the entire time trying to survive one disaster after another. John Cusak is also better than Gerard Butler. Special effects are amazing in both films.
