++Spoiler++ The ending

How did you guys find that ending ? I found it interesting to see Miguel in a way turning to "The dark side" and Johnny realizing what he created and to top it off having Kreese coming back?
What did you guys think and what you would like to happen for season 2

reply

Loved and hated it. Hated it only because it broke my heart seeing Miguel gain all that confidence only to let it ruin what was great about him to begin with. So know the story is far from over but still...

Loved it because it was awesome and just left me wanting more. My biggest concern is that YouTube Red isn't a viable platform for it. They don't have any content outside of CK that makes me want to stay beyond my free month. I worry that they're so far behind the likes of Netflix, Hulu, and Prime that they don't have a chance of catching up.

Hoping that should Red not be able to continue it, one of the other 3 steps in (which I think any if the, would be crazy not to with all the buzz it's getting).

reply

Yeah I agree it was a bit heartbreaking to see Miguel basically turning into what he was fighting against to begin with. For youtube red yeah it is my biggest concern about the show. It would have been a huge hit on netflix and would have been guaranteed a second season but on youtube red? For one thing it is not available as worldwide as Netflix so some countries will only see the first two episodes that are on youtube and will not watch the other episodes because they have to buy them individually on google store. If it was on Netflix it would have had huuuge number. Youtube red was a strange decision for sure. I really hope this will not stop the show from getting a season 2 because I really was left wanting more by the end of season 1.

reply

I also did the free trial for Red and there isnt much else worth watching. They need more shows badly. I will probably cancel until this show is renewed which i imagine it will be with all that was left open.

I want to see what Kreese has been up to. I also hope we see Terry silver and Mike Barnes. If Ed Asner is still healthy it would be interesting to see if his character does anything else.

reply

I really cannot wait what Kreese plan is. Is he going to want to take ownership of the dojo as he is the owner of the Cobra Kai brand? How will the kids react to him ? ... Seriously hope they will start production of season 2 soon,I cannot wait..

reply

I doubt he can take ownership. If a business, a small business, has been closed for 30 years I doubt he has the rights to the name.

reply

I thought Johnny made reference in one of the episodes, maybe at the board meeting, that Terry Silver is dead?

reply

He actually said John Kreese was dead (he had no idea who Terry Silver or Mike Barnes were). Whether he thought that was true or not I'm not sure, but looking forward to the explanation next season.

reply

Ah ok gotcha

reply

I just really hope Johnny isn’t pulled in by Kreese again. Johnny went through a huge journey to learn he went too far with the Cobra Kais to be dragged back down by Kreese....

reply

Same here, I am also worried about Kreese influence on the kiss. i am hopping Johnny would fine it in himself to realise that he went too far with his "No mercy" teachings and will find a way to stop the kids from becoming bullies outside the ring. However, if Kreese get to them he will encourage further their blossoming bad behavior. At the same time, I love to hate Kreese in the original film so I'm happy his back because it gives us an antagonist. I cannot wait!

reply

It seemed that Johnny explained what "No mercy" meant. That young Johnny, Dutch, Tommy perverted it's meaning doesn't mean that the meaning he gave the students before the tournament is not a wholesome definition. He just needs to make sure the students don't pervert the meaning of "No mercy".

reply

I liked all but the final episode.

I wonder why Kreese, a man in his seventies looking like he's on life support, would care about the results of Johnny's tournament or make future plans with Johnny. It's a small school, they can barely pay the rent much less make a profit. The tournament is probably barely covered in newspapers and even if it were widely covered Kreese's name would long have pariah written all over it. Johnny should have thrown Kreese out into the parking lot.

reply

I thought Kreese looked pretty good for a man his age

As for why he'd care, Cobra Kai was clearly very important to him

As for why Johnny would give him the time of day, remember that he was like a surrogate father to Johnny, along with all the regression that goes with it - even in his fifties, Johnny could conceivably fall under Kreese's influence

reply

But it's not like it's a continuation of Kreese's Cobra Kai. He didn't retire and sell the business to Johnny. It was out of business for thirty years. This is an unaffiliated business that happens to share the same name. There is a Murphy's Pizza in my hometown and one in Mitchell, SD. Same name but unaffiliated. Same with the two Cobra Kai schools.

The second part I agree with. Johnny is closer with Kreese than he is with Sid, that is clear. Although Johnny did say that his father figure tried to kill him.

reply

I thought the show was fantastic until the end. From the beach party onward it took a nosedive. The final scene, with the old sensei returning, was just dumb. The show had such potential, too.

reply

I agree. I also hated the evolution of Johnny's son. Other than that I loved it.

reply

I thought the Miguel arc was pretty good and you feel for Johnny as he realizes he turned Miguel into what he was originally fighting against. Kreese was certainly a surprise. Maybe a bit too soon to bring him back? It kind of felt like he was thrown in there just for shock value and to bring back as many characters as possible. Anyway we'll see how it plays out in season 2. Really enjoyed the series.

reply

I think Kreese showing up at the last minute, unannounced, in some ways is better than announcing he'll be in season 2. It was a good way to end the season... Even though I felt the dialogue in his scene was cheesy and beneath Kreese.

reply

I think Kreese really looked like a ghost of some sort. So He may have just been a vision. I don't think he'll be in any subsequent seasons.

As for the ending, it was good. It did mainly focus on Johnny and got into his back-story and why he was the way he was. I really dislike Daniel in this as he seemed really petty and was acting like that teenager again with a bad temper. He was a respected business-man and could have helped Johnny get on his feet since he knew he had fallen on hard times.

reply

That would be an interesting twist. Maybe he ends up being a recurring vision?

Yes, Danielson is still a hot head. Was frustrating at times.

reply

I agree with howgamer, Miguel arc was interesting and unsuspected. At the start of the show you root for the kid and by the end you barely recognize the likable geek from the first episode. It really say a thing about educating youth and the importance of the way you deliver your teachings.

reply

The ending with Kreese was a little cartoony. I mean he ran a Karate dojo in the 80's where kids paid for lessons. LOL! He was never Dr. Evil trying to take over the world. He wasn't part of the Mafia, and it wasn't used for money laundering or anything. If any of those illegal activities were implied in the original movie, then the ending fits. But I mean what the heck was that? Shadowy figure smoking a cigar, looking like Cigarette Smoking Man from the X-files. Talking about how Cobra Kai is back on top! On top of what? What do you plan Kreese? To dominate extra curricular activities in the valley? Dominate after school programs by signing them up for Karate? Take down the YMCA? What is this evil master plan?

Hehe.. Anyway, having said that. I loved this show! And Johnny Lawrence is my favorite. I hope in season 2, Daniel and Johnny has to team up against Kreese and Mike Barnes or something.

reply

Not just extracurricular activities in the valley!

With Kreese as its shadowy evil master, Cobra Kai will expand into Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Agoura, and, one day ... WESTLAKE VILLAGE!

Seriously, though, this was a small story about kids needing guidance and the flawed adults who try to guide them. Kreese doesn't have to be a supervillain to throw a major wrench into everyone's plans.

reply

Kreese wasn't needed, but I liked the idea of showing how that style of teaching can turn good people into monsters. At the end, Johnny realizes the negative transformation of his students as he gets to see it from the outside looking in, and he also sees the positive transformation of his own son under Daniel's style of teaching. I liked how they gave Johnny the victory over Daniel at the tournament so Johnny could have that moment, but also to show how his evolution has sapped the joy out of that victory.

It ended up being a way more interesting series than I thought it would be. Daniel turned out to be a creep, though a successful one as his style of teaching is still on point with Miyagi's. Johnny turned out to be a relatively ordinary guy with a desire to live in the past during his glory days, but that past brings with it a style of teaching that doesn't necessarily breed success. It's an interesting dynamic, and I think they pulled it off well.

I'd like to see it move forward with Johnny continuing to realize the flaws of his teaching, and Daniel realizing his personal flaws that can come from having too much success.
