Frustrating and Preposterous Movie

The premise involves ice skating commandos. I am not kidding about this although it sounds like a Jim Abrahams / Charlie Sheen war movie parody. And the main commando (Rapace) starts the movie as a diminutive 40-something single mom with a teenage daughter. How she becomes a kick ass special operations soldier and expert in multiple weapons and small unit tactics is never discussed. Likewise unmentioned is what Army she’s fighting with and who the enemy is. What each side is fighting for and how Sweden came to be a bombed out destitute war zone are also mysteries. The only thing we’re told is the soldiers must ice skate 100 miles of frozen river / ocean to get some vital canisters to a distant outpost. Their commander advises that ice skating is the only way because the ice is too thin for a vehicle and too thick for a ship. Yet when they get to their destination, we see a sophisticated military base where the Army is evacuating in an endless number of Chinook helicopters over that same body of frozen water. This was a very frustrating and preposterous movie

reply

Yep, stupid movie. Poor Noomi Rapace.
And why did they have to wear dark clothing while skating on ice? To be better visible for the audience? Or for the enemy?

reply

I think the issue is that Noomi Rapace was great in the Girl Who movies as, a bad ass woman character, and Hollywood can see that, and want to make money with it,

but, they can't seem to figure out how to do it.

A single mom, chasing to save her daughter? Can you be any more boring?

reply

I thought she did a pretty good job in Close.

reply

I don't doubt it. She is a really great actress, and I like that she is not...standard hollywood hot, but it seems she can't find a good role that fits her.

They should really just start making Girl Who sequels, and just ignore the fact that the first three were foreign films.

reply

She has been consistently very good in all the ones I have seen but in a way your also right. I am still a huge fan of hers.

reply

What Happened to Monday was a very good movie that she starred in that never got the attention it deserved. But yes, I agree that Hollywood mostly doesn't know what to do with her.

reply

Absolutely.

reply

I picked this movie specifically to watch her because I really liked her in other movies. I’m gonna watch what you suggest. Your past recommendations of other movies have been good

reply

Since you can enjoy a good female-fronted action film, I think you'll enjoy it. Though What Happened to Monday is as much mystery and suspense as it is action.

Give it a look and let me know what you think.

reply

I watched it start to finish. Story was a little hokey especially the denouement but Rapace playing seven different women was incredible to watch. I don’t know how the hell she kept track of it all. It was also pretty cool to see Glen Close in a villain role again. She has to be in the top ten of actors who can most effectively play a villain

reply

Glad to hear you enjoyed it.

It's been a long time since I watched it so my memory is a little fuzzy, but I do recall that Rapace's performance was amazing (or perhaps we should say performances).

I thought it was a cool movie. I went looking for it on Blu-Ray but apparently Netflix never released it on physical media. Dumb.

reply

I’ve watched at least three sleeper movies you’ve recommended and enjoyed all. Very much appreciated it.

reply

No problem! It's always fun when someone watches something I recommend and gives me their thoughts.

I remember The Long Kiss Goodnight and What Happened to Monday. What was the third?

reply

I believe I got Forty Guns from one of your posts. Or maybe that was recommended by liscarkat.

reply

Well I DID recommend that one, too. That was actually a recent watch for me. Did you also just watch it recently?

reply

I did watch it very recently. I haven’t even put my comments on that page yet.

reply

Cool.

I thought it was a fun movie that seems largely forgotten today. I asked a few people if they had even heard of it and all said no.

reply

What you said is true, and there's so much more wrong with this movie that I don't care to go into. The movie is so bad that it's not worth much discussion. My wife watched this with me. As punishment, she's making me watch Grease and Steel Magnolias.

reply

Unmentioned Army she’s fighting with is Russia of course. There is simply no other country that is this crazy to attack Sweden or any other country. Its not like they were fighting Norway or Iceland ))

Those soldiers were killing civilians and children. Only Russia is monstrous enough to do it now. Writers just didnt want to name them publicly in a movie. But it was very obvious.

reply

I don’t think that’s right because the movie said the fighting armies resulted from an internal civil war (which seemed a crazy premise for Sweden). This was one of the biggest problems for me. I didn’t know if I should be rooting for Rapace because the movie was very ambiguous as to whether she and her team were on the “good guy” army or the “bad guy” army. I think she was with the bad guys but who knows?

reply

Only Russia is monstrous enough

Yeah, and they eat babies as well...

What kind of news do all these idiots watch? Monstrous is killing 1 million civilians because of faked news about WMDs. And there is only one highly corrupt and greedy country that would do so.

reply

One evil doesn't crowd out another. The Russians are, in fact and at present, killing babies.

reply

Yes. Helicopters at the end were kinda stupid.
