One of the year's best movies

Tom Hanks recently said it was “heartbreaking” that “Greyhound” would not be played in theaters. No arguments here. This is a spellbinding achievement that should have been viewed in the dark, on a big screen.

Hanks, who wrote the screenplay for this, also plays Ernest Krause, a career Naval officer who is finally given his shot at captaincy of a vessel during World War 2. His mission is to lead a convoy over a three day period, across a treacherous spot in the Atlantic known as The Black Pit, in order to supply resources to allied forces.

“Greyhound” is literally and figuratively a gathering storm. The sky becomes overcast, the ocean roils, then we get a sense, but not yet a vision, of what the real threat will be. A German u-boat appears on sonar and the first 20 minutes of the film are just a white-knuckle bit of trying to figure out where it is and when it will strike.

Then the film becomes literally a metaphor for 2020; anything that can go wrong will go wrong. Ships are attacked, Krause’s vessel begins to ice up, the enemy taunts and produces decoys to aid in their goals. Director Aaron Schneider brings a dizzying amount of white knuckle tension. Occasionally he will pan across the ocean to reveal how it has devolved into a battlefield in a matter of seconds, and a scene where Krause’s ship is nearly broadsided by a missile is one of the most heart-in-your-throat shots I've ever seen.

There is so little time for rest, the movie only slows briefly so the crew can bury their dead. The rest is Krause orchestrating their attacks and defense, while at the same time feeling the guilt, fear, and doubt over whether he’s truly up to the task. Hanks is riveting here. The film will undoubtedly face criticisms for a lack of character development, which is true in a sense because it’s more tactical and thrilling in nature, but when it comes to Krause’s tireless command, this has its emotional center. And the film has its great message that America, hopefully, can still weather any storm.

It was a fine technical achievement and a terrific story
Tom Hanks at his finest as well👍

It felt like the first 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan stretched out to 90 minutes. Loved it

Yes, I thought it was well done. And it was pretty accurate with a few embellishments. The US Navy helped the British defeat WW2's Donald.

The US Navy helped the British defeat WW2's Donald.

Imagine actually writing this.

Awesome comment! ;-)

What's Adolf in English .... Donald.

I don't think it was a great movie but I totally enjoyed it. I love a WW2 movie and I love naval combat movies. The sometimes bland directing and inaccuracies did not ruin it for me. It hit the points. 7/10

I agree! Great movie. Entertaining throughout.

This was a good movie, but there's nothing in it that is "literally a metaphor for 2020". Actually, something is either literal or a metaphor. It can't be both.

reply

It was OK.
I am not sure I would say it was great,
though, compared to the negativity and destructiveness of the
normal movies we seem to get tons of, it was genius.
It was a kind of docudrama of a small slice of WWII, without
real context. In other words, it was about as dry as history but
without the facts or reinforcing repetition and redundancy to
assist in people understanding or remembering it.

I saw this recently and the other one where Hanks plays a ship
captain, Captain Phillips.

Looking at Hanks' filmography I think I can make a prediction, that
he is being groomed to be in politics, and the people who look that
far ahead and have the excess cash to do this are Republicans, so
I fully expect in the next 10-15 years we will see Tom Hanks trying
to get political. I hope I'm wrong. The strategy Republicans use to
get their agenda carried out is to build an image, as solid as possible,
that appeals to people emotionally ... like Donald Trump in Apprentice,
and just play that in public while passing whatever laws they want out
of sight and not really reported on.

Re Tom Hanks getting political as a Republican, he is a Democrat.

reply

I don't know what he is, but what I do know is that compared to
when I was a kid, there really is no Democratic Party any more.
We have a Republican Party portrayed in the media as a fairly
Fascist and crazy Republican Party, and moderate Republicans
who by money hold leadership positions in a pretend Democratic
Party and act as bulwarks against any real Democrats, which would
be FDR and Kennedy Democrats.

Our society is the audience and players in a political reality show
that tunes us to be passive viewers in a politics that makes no sense
at all, and that is designed to frustrate and drive citizens crazy, and
to only care about survival at the low end, and making more money
at the high end.

Nice write up.
It was a compelling movie.
Do you mean "broadsided by a missile" ... torpedo?
