another generic action movie from the Rock

time out

What a hot take!

I honestly don't think the guy's popularity will last much longer if he keeps doing shit like this. Because at the end of the day, no matter how famous you are, the audience desires quality. And so far, very few of the Rock's films deliver in that regard.

reply

You really think they care about you Rotten Potato, movie hating A-holes?!!

reply

You trigger easily. I think you either need some pills or you should simply start discussing why you like this movie so much. Calling people A-holes isn't going to make anyone come to your side or even engage with you in a civil debate about your opinions.

Honestly I don’t think the Rock really cares. I think he just does movies he knows he will have fun with.

The guy started as a Wrestler and look at him now! You only need to see how he acts outside of the movies and his personality there that seems he is just a big goof ball who is enjoying his life.

Which comes through in the movies he does which I can’t help but feel the audience gets pulled in by. We enjoy these movies even when they are so bad because the Rock is just fun. I don’t think that will go down anytime soon.

Plus his movies are a safe bet because we all by now know what they will be like. So people aren’t expecting anything different.

>at the end of the day, no matter how famous you are, the audience desires quality.

absolutely not. You take ANY entertainment medium and youll find the most popular things are far from being the ones of highest quality.

Quality is a completely subjective concept. However, my view that the Rock's latest flicks tend to generally lack it is not one that is uncommon. Aside from Jumanji and the Fast and Furious films, most audiences couldn't care less about his other films (this, Rampage etc.). Even if they WERE profitable upon release, it's not enough to sustain a career if no one remembers them. If Dwayne really wants to keep this gravy train of his going, he's going to need star in some actual quality films that people actually REMEMBER. If not, he'll probably soon go the down same route Seagal and Van Damme went.

Say what you will about Tom Cruise, but at least the guy knows how to manage his career via choosing quality scripts and hiring talented directors (and performing all your own stunts doesn't hurt either). The Rock should give that a try sometimes.

reply

>Quality is a completely subjective concept.

But doesnt that defeats your whole point then? If quality is subjective, than the only measure of quality we have is popularity, thus how famous you are DOES determine quality and Rock's movies are pretty popular.

Dwayne is making bank and is having fun doing it. I dont think he cares about legacy much. Does not seem that way from his interviews.

>he'll probably soon go the down same route Seagal and Van Damme went.

And yet everyone remmebers who they were. Funny how that works yeah?

Also both of them are still acting, though Seagal is also a lobbyst now.

Tom Cruise is a whole different caliber. That man is a fucking cyborg.

Nope. I said and I quote "my view that the Rock's latest flicks tend to generally lack it (quality) is not one that is uncommon". What I meant there was that I'm not in the minority in thinking the Rock's films suck. Nearly everything he's made that isn't Fast or Furious or Jumanji, has gotten mixed reviews at best and audience reception has been relatively lukewarm. Some may have made profits upon release, but like I said earlier, it's not enough to sustain a long-lasting career if no one actually likes them.

Take for example, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. That film was a gargantuan hit when it came out, yet its sequel was a complete box office dud. Meaning that audiences must not have liked the first film all that much in the first place. It was just marketing. Same thing with the Rock's films.

"Dwayne is making bank and is having fun doing it. I dont think he cares about legacy much. Does not seem that way from his interviews."

That's the image he has chosen to sell himself to the press with. I'm sure the guy has worries about the stability of his career all the time, just like the rest of us.

"And yet everyone remmebers who they were. Funny how that works yeah?"

That's 'cause celebrities in the West never truly die. No matter how old or irrelevant they are, we tend to remember them via talk shows on VH1 and such. Even Vanilla Ice, as much of a relic of the early 90's he was, is still largely recognizable to those born years after his popularity faded.

There's no doubt that the Rock's image will be recognized for decades to come. His actual relevancy though, is where I have my doubts.

Fair enough, i agree that there are a group of people that do not like his works. However as i pointed out they are profitable and the guy is doing fine financially. He also seems to be working hard at improving himself (and you can see his acting improve over time if you watch his movies), but of course he has a long way to go to become and A star.

I dont think your AiW example is apt, because Dwayne has made over a dozen of movies that kept getting the audience back. If anything, we see less audience retention for Star Wars than Rocks movies. His movies are clearly not for everyone, but the niche that likes him seems to like him enough to return to his movies.

>That's the image he has chosen to sell himself to the press with. I'm sure the guy has worries about the stability of his career all the time, just like the rest of us.

Acting is not his first career though and im sure he would find things to occupy his time if acting was no longer viable for him. But yes, literally everyone worries about thier careers sometimes, i just dont think Rocks is as unstable as you make it out to be.

Vanilla Ice, the only time i hear that name is when people talk about that period of time actually. I dont think i ever actually saw him though. Well Rock is proof that we still certainly have a market for these types of movies so theres people remmebering those celebrities fondly and they still seem quite relevant.

How was the film? Is the trailer really the best part about it or does the movie have some substance to it?

reply

nah, no real substance to it at all. I didn't even think it was that suspenseful cause after a while it just seems like every character has an insane amount of luck.

Have a short review of this movie if anyone is interested. If you feel there is something I could be doing better, I would definitely love to hear it. Review here - https://youtu.be/YHq3jCG16Hs

After that jumanji remake. Humanity and the rock have lost their way

reply

Look. We love the Rock but lets be honest. He's made mostly shit movies. He's not gotten the scripts that Arnold had in his heyday.

reply

Agree. He seems to be going for quantity over quality. Some actors -- like Sam Jackson for example -- can take this approach and do fine, because their acting range and choice of characters is so varied.

He seems to be a likable guy but DJ never stretches far from his one movie persona.

reply

Mostly for a Chinese audience. Everyone gets paid and moves on.

reply

Hes good at it, it brings the money and he seems to enjoy doing them. So... whats the problem?
