a few observations: no spoilers

many people are posting that that they can't get through the first 45 minutes. I agree, they are tough, but after that it turns into a good movie.

the score is horrible. I believe that definitely makes the movie tough to watch. if it was intentional by the directors than they did a great job.

Between watching this and The Sopranos the only thing I can say is: Don't gamble on sports.

I thought it was great throughout. The first 45 minutes felt like the tension was climbing, the characters were interesting, and so on. It's just a drama. Maybe people are too used to fast-pacing with binge-able shows and Marvel flicks?

I don't remember the score. That's not really a good thing, maybe, but, I don't remember it being off-putting.

Don't gamble with money you don't have - sports or not.

I watched the whole thing. I don't see this role as a break-out one for Sandler and he actually came across as similar to his character from Punch Drunk Love but this time he's older and lives in NYC selling Jewelry instead of decorated toilet plungers. The pacing and long camera takes also reminded me of Paul Thomas Anderson's penchant for aping Martin Scorsese and Robert Altman in many of his movies. The only problem for me was the constant fanservice to black youth/rap/NBA culture. It literally felt like we were watching special casting of groupies who either pitched in their money for this movie or just convinced the filmmaker to give them screen time. We didn't need to see Kevin Garnett or the Weeknd in this but they are featured prominently.

The story would have been more intriguing if they tied in the origin of the uncut gem since they showed us that ominous opening scene in Ethiopia, but they didn't and instead made it about Sandler trying so save his own ass in a New York Minute.

So you're saying having black characters in the film made it a problem for you? How ridiculous----it made the film more interesting for me. This Howard guy was clearly a big sports nut, so it made perfect sense that he'd want to hobnob with a major sports figure and their followers. Also, black youth, rap, and sports culture are very real parts of life---I don't know why you even had a problem with that, but that's your problem. I also liked seeing Lakeith Stanfield in it as the guy who hooks Howard up with Garrett--he's one of my faves. The film was okay----nothing great, but it was a good drama, and it was interesting to see Adam Sandler play another dramatic role, and an unlikeable character, too. And, yeah, that opening scene in Ethiopia was very intriguing---it was a reminder of where those gems came from, and the sacrifices made by the African people whose job it was to dig up those very gems.

No that's not what I said. Stop misrepresenting or better yet learn how to read.

reply

I'm not "misrepresenting" jack. And I know exactly how to read. That's what I got out of what you said. It dosen't mean my interpretation of it was stupid because that's what I assumed you meant. I didn't see the point in you even complaining about black folks being in the film because it sounded like that's what you were doing. Now go whine and complain about somebody's else post, you whiny troll.

reply

That's so pathetic, crying because there's black people in your film lol.

Almost every other film is a "fan service to white culture" by your logic, yet I bet you never whine about that.

reply

I'm not white, so you're shit projection had no merit.

reply

did I say that you were? I don't recall assuming your race in any comment.

the only thing I know about you for certain, which you just proved once again. is that you're an idiot, bordering on the level of retardation, and that you're so obsessed with race that you judge the quality of a film based on the skin colour of its cast.

what an absolute loser you are.

p.s. don't forget to air out your basement/lair today, smells like something died down there

the soundtrack was amazing btw.

Saw it in the theater and I thought it was overall great. Really suspenseful and intense film. However it was so loud, tense and fast paced that I can't see myself wanting to watch it again for another 10 years or my head might explode. 8/10.
