Ex-Wife Question

How many find it unlikely that the Federation (sorry, Planetary Union) would assign the captain's ex-wife as his first officer? They do explain that she had recommended him for captain, but it still seems unlikely to me that they would risk that level of emotional distraction.

reply

Maybe they have some future test that shows shes the best fit for him, the way Arnold Rimmer was the Best Choice to bring back as a Hologram to keep Dave Lister's Sanity in Red Dwarf.

reply

Love the use of the word 'unlikely' when referring to a sci-fi fantasy comedy.

Like those men who complain about Wonder Woman being unrealistic because she's a woman. Like Batman is a realistic character...

reply

People complain about Wonder woman because she looks like a super model, when, instead, she should look like a UFC fighter. Plus, this is a comedy, a parody, WW isn't.

reply

She doesn't really look like a UFC fighter in the comics though. But it really doesn't matter since we are talking about freaking comic book characters. Realism takes the backseat in that genre. I mean, she's a demi god for Petes sake. Her strength is magic rather than muscular.

reply

Yes, but even the newer generation comics make her look buffer. If we go by the "her strength comes from magic", Superman might as well be a scrawny nerd, ClarkKentish if you will.

reply

Wonder Woman's powers are beyond simple musculature, they are basically magic so her physical appearance doesn't matter.

reply

I do not see many complaints about WW being unrealistic because she is a woman. I see a lot of complaints about WW that are then not looked at objectively and only looked at as some sort of complaint that she is a woman.

I personally like the film and will purchase it on Tuesday but hope that in time, much sooner than later, the idea that a Woman can direct or be the focal point of an movie will not be celebrated EVERY time it happens. It has happened enough so that is should be an acceptable thing BY BOTH SIDES!!.

As far as women, in general, being the focus of an action film. Without a background such as WW being a supernatural being a 120 pound woman beating up fully trained 220 pound men is rather difficult latch on to but I just watch and enjoy action films.

I would like to say, however, would ANYONE have believed Rick Moranis in an action film? The answer is no. A man has to look the part whereas a woman just has to "have the right background in martial arts"

reply

Beyond unlikely. It would never happen in any kind of military or paramilitary organization unless it was forced by war or other exigent circumstances.

reply

It's whimsical, not a serious drama.

No more unlikely than Ed himself being made captain. It was explained that there was a severe shortage of officers to man the Union's fleet which is why Ed was given a captain's chair and his ex got the First Officer.

Besides, there's plenty of comedy gold to be mined if properly implemented.

reply

Geez, people need to lighten up. It's a lighthearted action comedy, don't over-analyze it.
