S3 Finale (Spoilers)

I don't know if it's the writing or Bill Hader himself directing a few episodes, but the balance of tone went off-kilter in this 3rd season. I didn't know what I was supposed to think or feel after the finale.

This should be the series finale. It wrapped everything up very nicely in a realistic way.

I truly don't think someone could get away with killing that many people in real life and not have that happen. There is no way he could continue an acting career or have a relationship with Sally doing what he did. The only question is if it would have affected Sally's career for it to come out that she was so close to a hired killer like that. I think that actually is why she went back to Missouri. Was that guy that she was nearly killed by her ex? That would make sense in my opinion. Now that he's gone it's basically safe for her to go back home at least for a while.

reply

It's already been renewed for S4. And the guy she stabbed was the guy from the motocross gang that was hunting Barry. That's why he showed up where Barry was staying.

reply

Makes sense. I just wonder how it will keep going.

reply

That's the idea. To make you curious as to how it could possibly continue. But technically, they don't have proof of anything other than him breaking in and pointing a gun. The rest is one man's word against another man's. And Fuches has suddenly adopted "The Raven" persona once in prison, so... Also, if the Feds want his help to go after the Chechens or Bolivians, he could cut a deal. There are some options to exploit here.

reply

Did he even break in? I think the door was unlocked.

reply

You're pushing it. I can't open your unlocked door or climb in through your open window.

reply

You can if you were invited there, or if you're a friend.

Bottom line: prosecutions are muddy/tricky. And depend on a LONG list of factors.

reply

That was a truly incredible piece of television.

I really dug it. The episode was so freaking intense. Every scene. Every character had something major going on. It never let up.

And I have no idea where they go from here. I really don’t want to see an entire season of Barry in prison. So unless he somehow escapes incarceration in the first episode, I’m not sure how they can make it interesting.

reply

Sure, but does it match the tone of the past 2 seasons? They even went all heavy with Hank this episode. It's hard to reconcile that with the comedy that used to be omnipresent. Making a joke of Cousineau charging Barry for an acting class, for every little side chat they had, seems a million miles away now. Or that detective letting him off the hook if he took care of his wife's other relationship. It went from dark comedy to just plain dark. And it seems to coincide with Bill Hader directing more and more eps.

Hit the nail on the head. The atmosphere watching it just got heavier and heavier!

I don't know what that look from Gene was at the end. I've read some people say it was a "I've got you at last" look but I'm not sure, he was more resigned. And we saw he didn't give Barry up easily - Why though, I'm not sure. Just cause Barry helped him get his career back on track?

Interestingly Barry was dumped on heavily by Sally and Gene here in the end.

reply

Gene gave his greatest acting performance in duping him. And he's resigned b/c of the money he took to stay quiet. That's gone along with his revival and the relationship with his son. As for the "Why?" -- yeah, that never played with me, unless you're sticking with dark comedy, b/c logically, it doesn't work.

reply

Gene gave his greatest acting performance in duping him.

Yeah, that was a pretty sad irony. Barry so desperately wants acceptance / love from Gene he'd do anything for him. All sense of logic re the situation was gone for him - not helped by the fact he was knackered from helping out Sally's "problem". Sally who'd just used him again and was jumping town.

Not sure who has any real morality in this show. Even Gene only did the "right thing" as his hand was forced.

And that's fine if it stays as dark comedy, where you're joking off of everyone being tainted in some way -- like that detective who hired Barry instead of taking him in.

reply

It's no longer a comedy.

reply

It was only barely a comedy to begin with, but the finale was very bleak. I laughed very hard this season at the voice to text scene in the department store, but it's not loaded with laughs.

reply

I did not enjoy Season 3. Too depressing. The show is supposed to be a dark comedy, but we had very little comedy. The guy at the bakery shop giving advice was hilarious though.

reply

It still had Noho Hank, and he always brings the comedy!

reply

Erm, except from when he hears his mates getting ripped apart by some unseen beast / lion and then sees his gay buddy being subjected to electrocution therapy... Then he doesn't bring so much comedy to the table!

reply

This. Hank is definitely usually the funny one, but pretty much nothing funny in the finale. He stepped up when he needed to though.

reply

I actually thought that WAS the finale. Huh. Kind of closed all the stories there.

reply

It had already been renewed for S4

reply

I had a hunch about the final scene. I knew it was a setup because it doesn't make sense for Jim to invite Barry into his home.
