I give up on this nonsense

I forced myself to trudge through season 2.I just couldn't finish season 3 of this woke ridiculousness. For a show that pats itself on the back for being inclusive the blatant lack of a single straight white male in the season 3 ensemble is just hilarious. The fact that Burnham has committed mutiny and continuously disregarded orders and is still a starfleet officer is just stupid writing.

reply

Star Trek is supposed to be woke.

reply

Star trek is suppose to be smartly written science fiction that tells socially relevant stories. This is neither of those things. This is a preachy identity politics show that cares more about promoting races, genders and sexualities than it does telling any kind of actual quality science fiction stories.

reply

Actually, it's both! Gene made it his mission to have a diversified cast which was extremely rare in the 60s.

reply

Problem is over the top diverse casting is about all this show excels at.Here's the thing.Fans that watch these shows don't generally care about the race, gender or sexual preference of the cast.Only SJW agenda groups care about superficial nonsense like that.Mainly what fans want are quality compelling sci fi writing and interesting likable characters to follow. This show delivers on neither IMO.

reply

Perhaps you weren't born at a time when discrimination was the norm on TV. If you google 1950-60s TV shows and look at the casts, you'll see how rare diversity was. The few diverse characters were stereotyped except for a few shows like Trek.

Original Star Trek was a major groundbreaker by having a diverse nonstereotyped cast. Diversity in film and TV is taken for granted now.

I've been to Trek conventions and trips which are amazingly diversified, too. We're Trekkies because of the utopian vision which includes diversity, no wars, no hunger, no poverty etc. We all get along.

Like Spock said, "Infinite diversity in infinite combinations".

I agree there should be good writing, direction, etc. And I prefer the social issues and commentary in the OT and TNG. My issues with STD are its dystopian viewpoint and it's not canon to the rest of Trek.

reply

You keep talking diversity..... that's true in one way, but by removing straight white males from the equation, you are kinda doing the opposite, no? A modern woke show does cast straight white males, but it depicts them as being utter morons or weaklings. STD is truly pushing new boundaries in the season 3 by introducing a brave new world where all straight white men have died off.

It's funny though, I dunno what's more offensive - misrepresentation of straight white men, or complete lack of representation?

I've seen plenty of foreign films where there were no white people at all and it didn't bother me a bit (because I get they are making their stuff for the local viewer consumption). But when they do have white people - but only female and gay dudes, it just seems seriously off.

reply

"I dunno what's more offensive - misrepresentation of straight white men, or complete lack of representation?"

Congratulations! Now you know first hand what women and POC have been complaining about re: THEIR lack of representation and stereotypes in film and TV shows.

But, unlike them, straight white males are still over-represented in Hollywood, therefore you have plenty of other movies and TV series to watch including other Trek series.

BTW, I believe it's a bit egocentric and selfish to expect EVERY movie and TV series to revolve around straight white males.

" it just seems seriously off."

Because you expect ALL U.S. movies and TV series to revolve around straight white males since that is the norm.

reply

Oh, I hear u about women, asians, etc
Hollywood is a racist institution owned by uber rich fucks - that's why you have racist crap coming out from white uber rich fucks and black uber rich fucks (spike lee/jordan peele - in case you ask).

Again, you didn't respond to my point - what type of inclusivity are you talking about, when it's anything by inclusive? My advise is not to use the word 'inclusivve', when clearly inclusion is no longer the goal of the current uber rich fucks. You are loving this woke crap - congratulations. Meanwhile, I'd love for there to be actual inclusivity, harmony and peace among people of all race/gender/ethnicity. Star Trek is a modern Hollywood product with woke goals in mind - where reverse stereotyping/exclusivity is the name of the game. You think it's now awesome, while I say that it's the exact same shit from the past but in reverse.

If whites were killing blacks in the past, it's wrong. If blacks are killing whites now, it's equally wrong. In your mind, only the former is wrong, while the latter is perfectly acceptable.

reply

Trek is inclusive and diverse by your own admission. Of course, not ALL ethnicities, races, religions, etc. can be represented in every single TV series or movie since human diversity is so varied. For instance, I doubt if any Inuit, Orthodox Jews or Haitians are in ST:D, but you're not complaining about that.

The problem isn't with the series, but your ENTITLED attitude. You expect EVERY TV series and movie to revolve around a relatively small minority, straight white males.

I repeat, you have plenty of other series and movies to watch since the majority discriminate in a way that meets your approval.

reply

Wait - gay white males are now the majority? We are fucked. lol

reply

You do know that women are around half the population, right?

reply

OK - you're right

Then why TF were women so pissed off about the old movies/tv shows? heck, they had 'I love lucy'. whiners - lol

reply

I Love Lucy is an exception. Btw, Lucille Ball was a great innovator. She invented the multiple camera shot and shot the show on film instead of video thereby creating the rerun. Desilu, Desi and Lucille's production company, is also responsible for Star Trek!!!! Hoorah! I read that she created the production company and produced I Love Lucy herself because Hollywood didn't want her Hispanic husband playing her hubby on the show.

Old movies (before 50s) were actually pretty good because there were quite a few good LEADING roles for women and early film had more women directors, writers, producers, etc. Early film was considered art. As soon as it became a business, women were pushed out. Eventually women roles became supporting roles such as a wife or girlfriend of a male lead. One actress said something many years ago which I never forgot. "How would you like your entire acting career only playing someone's girlfriend or wife?" That sounded boring to me.

reply

You don't seem to know anything about Star Trek.

reply

clap clap clap

reply

I didn't even bother watching. The moment I heard all the BS that was gonna be in Season 1, and what people were reporting on, I avoided this series like the plague.

reply

I really did try.I'm not a huge Star trek fanboy.Just a casual fan who has always enjoyed the franchise. But this show was not written for star trek fans.It was written solely for PC SJW fanatics.Normally i'll watch anything Star trek but i'm washing my hands of this show and regret wasting as much time as i did on it.

reply

I wish Star Trek had their own "John Favreau" that could take it away from Kurtzman the jerk and de-canonize this freakshow.

reply

lol

reply

that's what u get 4 watching it, probably gave u an std as well.

reply

Yup. It sucks ass.

reply

>> the blatant lack of a single straight white male in the season 3 ensemble is just hilarious <<

I loathe STD with a passion, but to be fair, I'm pretty sure Doug Jones is a straight white male the last time I checked (married to wife Laurie since 1984), and he's a major part of STD's cast. He's also a devout Christian in real life.

reply

Fair point but I was referring to straight white male characters not actors. This show is written for identity politics nuts not fans.

reply

You lasted longer than I did. I was able to watch the first season for free and halfway through I thought it wasn't that bad. Not that good, either. The only character I liked was the captain played by Jason Isaacs. Burnham was awful. One of the worst characters I've seen in Star Trek. But so were the rest of them. That fat weird redhead? The gay guys. It was too much. I gave up during the last episode when things went really haywire nonsensical gibberish. The actress I was most interested in seeing was Michelle Yeoh, who seemed completely off from what I saw of her. She never seemed at ease.

I am very curious about the new series about Pike, hoping that will be at least good.

All of the characters are either simply annoying or barely tolerable. The only interesting characters i liked were Lorca, Pike and Spock. And the writing is just bottom of the barrow illogical identity politics pandering.I don't care what race, gender or sexuality the characters are. Those traits are superficial and trivial.I only care about likable characters and decent writing. This has neither.

reply

The problem with this show and others like it is because they fixate on what isn't really important first and then the actual story second.

Everytime a new character is introduced it is their sexuality or how they describe themselves is supposed to be the primary reason for watching it and then they shoe horn in some contrived story line to somehow account for it.

No one cares who you sleep with or what made up term you call yourself no matter what the mainstream media try to spin us "toxic" fans to be.

People complain because we all know it is in the most part just box ticking exercises and when you do critque or complain which as far as i'm aware is not a crime you get called an "ism" or "phobe" and that then creates more backlash. It is a circular event.

The alien in the orville is basically gay and shock horror no one cares because he is a good character.
