Hypothetcally Speaking....Greatest CBM trilogy of all time?

Ok so I know right now.....The Majority consensus is....

The Dark Knight is The greatest CBM trilogy of All Time...obviously this is a Marvel board and many here may not agree, But That is the consensus...

I also think at this point The Captain America trilogy is the clear #2(maybe even an argument for #1)

but here my question....Obviously The Avengers Isnt a trilogy because we GOT a 4th one coming out that is basically a Part 2.....theres just no way to look as that as a Trilogy...

the other problem is....even if you DID.....Age Of Ultron is A serious weak link in the Trilogy and would disqualify The Avengers Trilogy for being in the same league with TDK Trilogy....

but Hypothetically speaking....what if WE replaced Age Of Ultron with Civil War, CW is An Avengers films....

what if The Avengers Trilogy was......The Avengers, Civil War and Avengers IW.....IMO that now becomes the greatest CBM Trilogy of all time....Topping TDK Trilogy

what are your thoughts...Hypothetically speaking where would you rank The Avengers, Civil War and Avengers IW as A Trilogy?

I truly believe If AOU didnt exist and Instead Civil War came out as The Avengers: Civil War(basically Avengers 2)....right now after AIW the majority consensus would be The Avengers just took over The #1 spot for The greatest CBM trilogy of all time...

These 3 films are just too Great...All 3 films you could make the cases is the BEST film in The Trilogy...and most Importantly it would feel like A True Trilogy....You would have The Creation of The team in Avengers ....The next step and The Splitting of The Team in Civil War and Everything Culminated and Coming to a conclusion in AIW...

This is just a lot of denial and wishful thinking.

reply

what do you mean by Denial?

what am I denying exactly?

reply

You're denying AoUs existence and instead, trying to replace it with a movie that isn't part of the Avengers franchise.

reply

But Billbrown7017 is not denying it be the post that states that it freaking exists. Billbrown7017 is making a hypothetical argument that IF AoU could be replaced with Civil War (Billbrown7017 knows that it can not be but is putting the idea out for discussion) would the Avengers/CW/IW combination be good enough to be the greatest trilogy?

FFNogoodnik (157) answered right....

I'm not denying it.....

I state upfront The Avengers franchise is Not in The same league with TDK franchise because AOU disqualifies it....

I'm in no way saying "Hey replacing AOU with CW makes The Avengers the best".....I know that cant be done....This is purely a "what If".....a Hypothetical situation...

I could completely understand you saying I'm in denial if I said "Well to me, I'm throwing out AOU and replacing it with CW....that to me clearly makes The Avengers trilogy of The Avengers, CW and AIW the best and better than TDK"

If I were literally trying to distort reality and say AOU doesnt exist, CW is Part of the trilogy....yes I would be delusional...

but this is a complete what If.....just like what if Jordan played Lebron in their primes....

This is a Hypothetically, If AOU didnt exist, and CW was Avengers 2....would you consider The Avengers, CW and AIW the best Trilogy ever...

I dont think its possible for me to be less Fair or more upfront and in now way in denial....

My vote goes to Captain America. First Avenger is good. Winter Soldier is one of Marvel's best (#1 or 2 for me). Civil War is also excellent.

For me, Avengers 1 is good, but overrated. Avengers 2 is kind of a mess. Avengers 3 is good, not great (too many characters, hence many do very little, and lacks an emotional core).

reply

In my opinion the Captain America trilogy would not qualify as a top trilogy because CA:TFA was weak to me. The Winter soldier was very good, I like that a lot. Civil War, to me, is very overrated so it pulls down the CA trilogy as well as the hypothetical trilogy.

I think Civil War fails to do one thing that is needed for it to be a great film. It fails to show Captain America's side well. In fact it basically proves the "Iron Man" side is correct. Look at what Cap does, he goes all out to save his friend, which is admirable, but in doing so he puts many lives in danger (I am sure several people went into that tunnel alive but did not come out so) because he did not care how his actions are affected other people.

reply

I don't know. TDK trilogy is likely the greatest CBM trilogy of our time but... Captain America's trilogy was pretty awesome too. It's hard for me to say for sure. I'd give the edge to TDK, mainly on the strengths of the second movie in that trilogy, however that's a dime's edge I'm thinking. Then again, WS was the second movie in Cap's trilogy so it's kind of back-and-forth for me.

Probably TDK trilogy but I'm not going to argue with someone who picks the CA trilogy.

reply

Age Of Ultron is A serious weak link in the Trilogy and would disqualify The Avengers Trilogy for being in the same league with TDK Trilogy....

Dark Knight Rises is FAR weaker, it's one of the worst big-budget movies I've ever seen.

Batman Begins wasn't a good start, either. It's decent.

reply

I didn't want to antagonize with Bill. However, i think the same as you: TDKR is weaker then Age of Ultron. Since The Avengers is on par with TDK (I can give you a small advantage to TDK because the Oscar), and Infinity War is vastly superior to Batman Begins, we have (in order of the best movie in each franchise):

The Dark Knight >= The Avengers
Infinity War >>>>> Batman Begins
Age of Ultron > The Dark Knight Rises

There is no need to take Age of Ultron out of the comparison. With this The Avengers trilogy is clearly the best.

reply

Fully agreed, and excellent comparisons, as I also put the first Avengers as the best of its trilogy.

reply

Yeah, I really think the second Avengers was the weakest of all the MCU movies. I didn't hate THOR: DW the way a lot of people did but I enjoyed it more than AOU, which was done shoddily by Josh Whedon. I also blame bad writing for AOU's story. It wasn't nearly as coherent as other MCU movies and Ultron came across more as a nuisance than a real world threat.

TDKR is a much better movie, in my opinion. Tom Hardy's Bane was fabulous. You felt a real sense of menace when he was on the screen and the stakes seemed higher. I felt a sense of dread at what was happening to Gotham, I never felt the same about the Earth in AOU.

reply

Dark Knight Rises is FAR weaker, it's one of the worst big-budget movies I've ever seen.

^^^

but thats ^^just your opinion..

The Majority consensus is, TDKR is better than AOU....

I'm going by The Majority Consensus, and Based on that The Dark Knight Trilogy is considered to have 1 Truly Great film In TDK and Then 2 Very good films in TDKR and BB.....Both are considered a step down from TDK....but still very good.

With The Avengers, Avengers 1 is considered by the majority to at least be on TDKs level(Based on Polls, articles and lists the last 5 years, The Avengers and TDK are almost always the #1 and #2 ranked CBMs all time)

But AOU is considered a Bigger step down from Avengers 1, Than TDKR is to TDK.....Based on any and all data, The Majority considered AOU a worse film than TDKR, Obviously you feel differently and thats fine....

But for me and this post, I'm going by The Majority consensus, and Age Of Ultron Is Considered a Weak link and would disqualify it from being mentioned in the same league as The Dark Knight Trilogy...

The Dark Knight Rises is believe it or not a Universally Praised film that had a Incredible box office run and has Great ratings on every single site....In just had the unfortunate situation of coming out after The Dark Knight...

Age Of Ultron Had a Great box office run, But Reviews, rating and stats all around are "Above Average" and NOT Great....Its not in any way in the same league with TDKR on any of these fronts(at least based on the Majority consensus)

now I do feel, The Dark Knight has Aged pretty bad...I dont think It would get nearly the same reviews and ratings today as it did 6 years ago....thats why Its almost never it the Top 5 or 10 "Best CBMs" lists in recent years...

but I cant ignore facts....and Facts say TDKR is considered a Much better film than AOU by the majority....

Batman Begins wasn't a good start, either. It's decent.

^^^

This opinion is also not shared by The Majority, which again is fine....

it seems you just may not be a fan of Nolans Batman movie or just dont think as highly of them as most others...

But Batman begins is once again at least based on the Majority Consensus, A Very Good film...

in fact unlike TDKR it seems to have gotten better with Age....People seem to be enjoying and respecting it more now than when it came out...

regardless, I'm no in way saying your opinion is wrong, Your entitled to your own opinion, I'm just pointing out, your opinion is not shared by The Majority and for this thread, I'm basing it on The Majority Consensus

reply

Consensus on that is skewed because TDKR also has strong Nolan cultism behind it (and yes I've been a Nolan fan since seeing Memento in the theater, even loved Insomnia and saw that in theater as well, in fact seen every Nolan film but Dunkirk and the Prestige in theater).

reply

Forced to agree with you two posts running now Frog - I'm beginning to worry about myself.

Batman begins was very average, Dark Night was surprisingly great and the Dark Knight Rises was a cluster fuck.

reply

I consider the Cap trilogy the best as all three movies were all really good. Batman Begins and Dark Knight Rises were just okay, imo, but Dark Knight was amazing. Most comicbook movie trilogies have two great movies and one bad final chapter for whatever reason.

I’m one of the rare few who’s pretty fond Age of Ultron, and if I were to view The Avengers, AOU, and Infinity War as a single trilogy, I still must say that the Captain America trilogy (INCLUDING the very underrated First Avenger) gets my vote as the greatest CBM trilogy. If I leave AOU out of the equation and replace it with Civil War, now that would *probably* tie things up with the Cap trilogy. HOWEVER... although 2012 Avengers remains a monumental film that deserved all its accolades (in other words, I LOVE it), 2011’s The First Avenger is a film I honestly love no less.

No joke, I always saw First Avenger as a delightful, subtle, aesthetically pleasing, well-directed, wholly unique, powerful superhero film. It was a fine introduction to a superhero who eventually became a household name. For all the criticism some give this first entry, if that film disqualifies the Cap trilogy as the best, then I fail to see how The Dark Knight Rises honors what many would consider a masterpiece trilogy. And just to let you know, I consider TDKR a strong film in its own right. Ultimately though, it didn’t fully live up to The Dark Knight (the same cannot be said for the spectacular follow up to The Winter Soldier) and it is heavily flawed. Heh, Batman Begins isn’t the most acclaimed Batman film either, is it? Certainly it’s consider good and it made an impact when it came out; it was the Batman film fans deserved. But over the years, it seems to me it hasn’t had the most favorable reputation, especially compared to TDK. I can see why. I probably always favored BB over TDK by the way; and yes, the 2008 film is an amazing achievement. In any event, The First Avenger is a grade-A film for my money.

Now let’s bring in The Winter Soldier and Civil War into the discussion. Here you have two films which took the franchsie (and arguably CBM/superhero films in general) to new heights, with Civil War in particular ending on a much higher note than most third entries in a trilogy do. These first two Russo Brothers films are the most grounded and visceral in the MCU, yet they superbly capture the excitement, wonder, and essence of the comics. How about the action in both films? Some of the finest I have seen in all of modern action cinema. I simply can’t express enough enthusiasm for them. So, where does that leave things with Avengers? Well, as I already said, I admire Age of Ultron. But if we’re being hypothetical here, The Avengers, Infinity War, and Avengers 4 (I have no doubt it’s going to be top-tier) might end up making the best - hypothetical - CBM trilogy there is. Or, it shall be tied with the Captain America trilogy. ;) I mean Infinity War alone is a contender for the greatest CBM.

Bottom line: hail the Russo brothers!

reply

Hated the AoU because they made Ultron into a joke cracking egomaniac, he was never this way in the comics.
Cold, calculative and ruthless what he should have been. No emotions

reply

Seems like every professional outlet and rating site lists the Dark Knight trilogy as not just the best CBM trilogy but as one of the best trilogies in film history.

I think the the former aspect is undisputable (sans any viable competition), while the latter is questionable.
