WTF with Jake Gyllenhaal performance?

Seriously just wtf was he doing

Great question. Attempting and failing at comedy. His performance and to a lesser extent Tilda Swintons performance were so weirdly over the top that they caused a real tonal imbalance in an otherwise good film.

Yeah, it was WAY over the top.

I'm guessing that it was Joon-ho Bong asking him (and most of the other primaries) to give incredibly off-the-rail renditions of their characters in an effort for us to view all corporate critters as defective people. The only one of them that seemed normal was Giancarlo Esposito, but of course he was a yes-man corporate shill. The rest were just insane, out of touch with humanity, but in a totally bizarre way that to me was a failure.

The ALF characters were over-board too, probably pissing off members of the real ALF.

The only part of this film that I really liked was the depiction of home. At the end of the film when Mija was back in the mountains with her grandfather, I said "I could easily spend a week there". They also did a good job building up character and trust between her and Okja earlier in the film. They gave enough time for that, but not for the rest of the film.

LOL is there a real organization call it ALF? they din't know that name was already take for an alien who made a show in the 80's

Animal Liberation Front predates the 1980's....

Gyllenhaal nailed it... the celeb animal "dr." is more of a showbusiness role than corporate... I think he was solid in it, especially the professional jealousy he had towards the superpig and towards Mija...

I'm in the minority here, but loved that he was over the top.

It's rare that I suffer secondhand embarrassment for an actor, but I did at times for him in this movie.

reply

Yeah he was just terrible. He should stick to films where he doesn't do comedy.

I thought he was really great in this.

You obviously didn't get the comedy.
