Did Rian Johnson know that Rey would eventually be revealed as being related to Emperor Palpatine?

And if not do you think it would have changed how he would have directed The Last Jedi?

reply

They had no idea what they wanted to do from one movie to the next. Colin Treverrow had the idea of making her a Kenobi. Johnson thought it was best if she had no lineage. Abrams didn’t really know or care until he had the third movie dropped on his lap and he quickly rushed the Palpatine bullshit.

Selfish Rian Johnson didn't even care for the next guy coming to finalize the trilogy and left him with nothing !

Even JJ himself fogot about his mystery boxes from TFA.

reply

JJ didn’t forget about his mystery boxes, he just never cared enough to have explanations. That is his schtick.

the higher ups could have said no. they're the ones with final say, who green light such things.

seems to me the incoherence, lack of arc from film to film has to be laid at the feet of the people who sign off on the script and the final product.

Agree with everyone. It annoys me to no end how Disney decided to tackle this trilogy. I'm not saying you had to go the Lord of the Rings route and film all 3 movies at once but it also wasn't like the original SW where it was just one movie that got successful so you made sequels. Everyone knew for decades this was always going to be a trilogy of films (Mark Hamill even talked about this in the 80s) so the first thing Disney should have done after acquiring the brand was come up with a 3 part treatment. I know Lucas had one but even if they didn't want to use it, come up with a guide for yourselves that all directors needed to follow. Have some kind of road map! Again, this isn't the 90s anymore, we are in the mid to late 2000's and fans and films have advanced beyond the 'fly as you go' nonsense; especially for a set of movies this important to people. This isn't like Iron Man where you don't know if this random Marvel character will sell so you make one movie to see how it goes; it's friggin Star Wars!

Sorry for the Rant. I am just annoyed that with all the time they had or could have taken to come up with a decent story line and to know where they wanted to go with characters; they got greedy and rushed, cared too much about social justice nonsense over stories and then decided to play 'FU' with the long time fans. They should have known who Rey's parents were supposed to be before they even started story boarding.

Just read in another post that JJ possibly had a treatment for the 2nd/3rd movies on where he saw the characters going and Kennedy allowed Johnson to do his own thing. It that is true, then that is what I am talking about with how blind Disney has been with this franchise. Why would you do that? just dumb all around on Disney's part.

reply

Whats the matter? Rey, being a strong woman in this trilogy a problem for you? Disney knows it has to be at the forefront at the WOKE craze, which has energized Hollywood

reply

No. According to Daisy Ridley they didn't even know during filming of TROS! They flip-flopped back & forth between no lineage, her being a Kenobi, and eventually Palpatine. It's unbelievable how mismanaged the trilogy was considering it was in the hands of a mega-corporation!

reply

Disney rushed the sequel trilogy.

They should have delayed the release of the first movie by at least a year to focus on mapping the entire trilogy under one single person's guidance-vision (like they've done with Feige at Marvel), they should have hired the guys in charge of Mandalorian (F+F) with Kasdan also involved at least with polishing the dialogue, not the story structure.

reply

No. All he left for the next movie to develop was magic broomstick boy.

reply

That made me laugh.

No. Nobody knew anything that's why the entire trilogy is such a mess.

Bob Iger's greed had the production team rushing the first movie to be released in 2015 instead of a proper planned trilogy.

reply

It was a pretty lame 'twist' tbh.
