If the chatter is true it looks like a 35 million Thursday preview number which is 10 million less than The Last Jedi and 22 million less than The Force Awakens so 200 million looks out of reach. Disney's intentionally conservative estimate of 160 million may be right on target. Anything lower than that and we may have a situation where it struggles to hit Rogue One total numbers and that's horrible for The final episode of the Skywalker saga.

reply

Give it five years. Another reboot.

reply

I'm waiting for the crowed to die down my self. I hate getting bad seats on opening night but I'm too lazy to order tickets early.

reply

Well from what it looks like nationwide...getting a good seat for TROS shouldn't be too hard.

LOL

reply

I'll take my chances after the holidays. The movie still opened 3rd top opening week end this year. I reject the notion that anything below second place this year is a box office bomb.

reply

$40m is 10% less than TLJ, so $200m looks likely. From BOMojo:

FRIDAY AM UPDATE: Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker delivered $40 million from Thursday evening previews, serving as the fifth largest preview gross ever. The performance comes in $5 million behind the $45 million preview gross for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which went on to deliver a $220 million three-day domestic debut. A breakdown of preview showings for the previous two entries in the Skywalker saga are [article].

In addition to its domestic launch, The Rise of Skywalker is now open in 46 international markets and after two days has brought in $59.1 million with the UK serving as the largest performance yet, bringing in $8.3 million on its opening day followed by Germany ($7.2m), France ($5.3m), Australia ($4.3m), China ($3.6m), Mexico ($2.4m), Brazil ($2.2m), Italy ($2.1m), Sweden ($2.0m), Norway ($1.5m), Russia ($1.4m) and Denmark ($1.3m).

reply

I think it is a mistake to extrapolate a 10% preview drop to a 10% weekend drop. The people going to the preview are the most hardcore of hardcore fans. They will have booked their tickets long before any reviews came out. This has by far the worst reviews of the trilogy, and the reaction of the general public seems to be the same. Typically trilogies see a dip in the second installment and a surge for the finale. I think it is a safe bet to interpret a drop in preview attendance from the second installment rather than an increase as a very bad sign of sagging interest.

reply

"General public" reaction has been positive on the whole.

reply

Indeed.

reply

That would be the people who don't know who Darth Vader is, right?

reply

Nonsense!

reply

160 to 180 looks about right
however if it does better conspiracy idiots will claim Disney was buying seats

reply

Disney is buying tickets in India now. They can get a million for only $3m!

reply

Disney dosnt buy tickets for there movies. I cant understand why anyone would believe that

Box Office: ‘Rise Of Skywalker’ ‘Star Wars’ Fatigues To Huge $90M Friday
https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2019/12/21/box-office-rise-of-skywalker-star-wars-fatigues-to-huge-90m-friday/

So much for Star Wars fatigue. The force was strong with Walt Disney and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars saga one more time, as J.J. Abrams' The Rise of Skywalker looks to earn around $190 million for its domestic opening weekend.

After two years of huffing, puffing and handwringing about Last Jedi controversies and alleged Star Wars fatigue, Lucasfilm and Walt Disney’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opened like a Star Wars movie. J.J. Abrams’ threequel earned $90 million on Friday, including $40 million in Thursday previews. Comparatively, The Last Jedi earned $45 million on Thursday for a $104.6 million opening day while The Force Awakens earned $57 million in previews towards a $119.1 million Friday.

reply

so they in fact lost more fans after TLJ

reply

Yes....This is an incredible result for the 3rd film in a series....and an absolute HOME RUN coming off SOLO and TLJ for Disney and the SW franchise....

190 M+ OW is Better than anything Disney could have hoped for and A TINY dropped compared to other films in the 1.5 B+ and 200 M+ Opening club...

Jurassic World 2 had a massive drop after Opening over 200 M+

so much for Queens expectations of a 150 to 160 Milliion OW that would prove the franchise is in serious trouble....

In fact I can pretty easily say this ENDS his near 3 year trolling quest of trying to claim the franchise is trouble, with a resul like this theres simply no going future for Queen....

Lets for a moment now stop and reflect on this franchise Queen has spent 3 years claiming is "Dying and In trouble"...Lets see the results

The Force Awakens--$2 Billion +--sets all time domestic record--Disney Nets a confirmed 780 Million + in Profit(Just off theatrical grosses)

Rogue One-1 Billion +--Disney Nets a conformed 320 Million in Profit(Just off theatrical grosses)

Star Wars The Last Jedi--$1.3 B+--Disney Nets a confirme 420 Million in Profit(Just off theatrical grosses)

SOLO--complete disaster Disney Lose over 100 Million

Star Wars The Rise Of Skywalker--$190 M+ OW--easily tops 1 Billion +--Disney Will net between 300 to 420 Million in Profit

So to recap,In a franchise Queen spent 3 years claiming Is "In trouble"

4 out of the 5 SW film topped 1 Billion+
4 out of the 5 Netted Disney over 300 Million In Profit
4 out of the 5 Opened over 155 Million
4 out of the 5 Will top 500 Million domestically
2 topped 200 Million + on OW
2 Topped 600 Million + domestically
1 achieved the all time domestic record
1 Had The all time opening Weekend record
and Disney has Made Literally Billions more from Merchanting on these films

all in all This franchise thats "Its Trouble" I think has had The 2nd most successful run in Hollywood History ONLY behind Disneys other 4 film franchise in The Avengers.

the facts behind The Avengers Franchise are a tiny bit more astonishing...

The Avengers---1.5 B+--207 Million OW(The record)---500 Million + in confirmed profit for Disney
Age Of Ultron--1.4 Billion+--390 Million + in profit confirmed for Disney
Avengers Infinity War---2 Billion +---257 M OW(record)--confirmed 500 Million + in Profit for Disney
Avengers Endgame---2.790 B+(all time record)---868 M domestic(2nd all time)--357 M OW(record)--confirmed 600 Million in Profit for Disney

4 out of 4 films topped 1.4 Billion+
4 out of 4 films topped 190 M+ OWs
4 out of 4 films topped 450 Million domestically
4 out of 4 netted Disney over 390 M in Profit
3 out of 4 films netted Disney over 500 M+ in Profit
3 out of 4 topped 200 M + on OW(no other franchise has done this)
3 out of 4 topped 600 Million domestically(no other franchise has done this)
3 out of 4 topped 1.5 Billion World Wide(no other franchise has done this)
2 out of 4 topped 2 Billion + World Wide(no other franchise has done this)
3 of the 4 films in series BROKE the opening Weekend record(no other franchise has done this)

all in all I guess its good to Disney....Literally Producing The 2 Most success franchises of all time at the same time!

reply

Disney has made a lot of money with Star Wars. No arguing that. However, much like the Transformers franchise, Star Wars is trending down. Each movie is making less than the last. This is Episode 9! The close of a story 42 years in the making. This should be making Avengers:Endgame money. It's not and it won't. They're slowly losing the trust of the fans. Disney needs to continue to push good Star Wars content through Disney+ in order to gain back the fans they lost.

reply

They're losing the trust of the fans because they're making unoriginal rehashes with identity politics built-in and no general outline, regardless of the technical excellence on display.

reply

Yes, but it's amazing how much money they've left on the table.

All they had to do was give the original characters a dignified reunion and respectable send-off/death while passing the torch to the next generation.

But, no, they had to consciously destroy the personalities of the old characters, all the while ham-fisting the half-assed new characters down the fans throats.

It wasn't necessary, and it wasn't good business - but the new team was driven by their SJW agenda, and couldn't help but let the populace know how much they hated the traditional roles & values portrayed in the OT.

SJW's are nothing more than narcissistic self-hating garbage, spreading their innate contempt for themselves over the rest of the world.

reply

They needed the new characters to replace the old heroes so that they can use then new characters for the sequels or spin-offs. Yes, they sacrificed the old heroes for filthy lucre.

reply

Yep, they needed new heroes, but they didn't have to shit on the old characters in the process - there was no reason to do what they did with Luke, Han, and Chewie other than SJW spite.

reply

However, much like the Transformers franchise, Star Wars is trending down

^^^

While I completely agree SW is trending down....I no way would compare it to Transformers or Even The Pirates Franchise...

The numbers simply arent comparable

I was extremely curious to see TROS's numbers, because honestly I truly had no clue how it would perform, I actually thought it was entirely possible a "Transformers or Pirates" type drop could be coming after The 1-2 punch of TLJ and Solo

But Theres no getting around These OW results....the SW franchise is still Incredibly strong

In fact, while I agree, there no arguing The franchise isnt trending down, but if you look at The Overwhelming Majority of Trilogies or Franchises, The Drops were seeing with SW are Way better than the norm.

again with The LONE exception being Marvel Studios MCU films

but overall Its pretty rare for a series of films with 3 more to continue to make more than its predecessor

The overwhelming Majority of Long running series Have drops and again while SW is certainly having drops, With The Results of This Opening Weekend for TROS, SW drops are Better than Most, especially given The "League" its in....

the 1.5 BILLION+ and 200 M+ opening Week club is rare...

SW drops are right line with the few examples we have

TFA-257 OW-900 M+ domestic-2 B+ WW
TLJ-220 M+OW-600 M+ domestic-1.3 B+WW
TROS-190 M+ OW-500 M+ domestic-1.1 to 1.2 B WW

Jurassic World-208 Million OW-650 M+ domestic-1.6 B+ WW
Jurassic World 2-148 M OW-417 M domestic-1.3 B+ WW

Furious 7-147 M OW-353 domestic-1.5 B+ WW
Fate/Furious-98 M OW-226 M domestic-1.236 B WW

I mean you Have Franchises like The Fast and Furious and Jurassic World that are having Bigger drops by far

I think saying These series are Trending down is just not the right terms...while technology true, they are trending down, these 3 series(SW,JW and F+F) are on FIRE and are just having normal drops...

for me, when were talking about a Franchise Trending Down....something like Transformer, Pirates, the DCEU, Terminator, Men In Black, X-Men, Fantastic Beasts, Planet of The Apes, Alien, the Bourne Franchise, Under World, Resident Evil, The Transporter, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles + The Expendables

another example was The Amazing Spider-Man, You had 2 films that both Disappointed, one was awful...But TASM1 Dropped Huge in Box office from SM3, Then TASM2 posted franchise lows in everything

In all these franchises cases, You had Disastrous drops from the last films in the series, HUGE DROPS with nothing suggesting additional films would do any better

I just dont see SW, JW or F+F having anything in common with them, yes they are having drops, But saying They are "Trending Down" just doesnt for me feel right....they are UBER franchise still producing MONSTER hits

This should be making Avengers:Endgame money. It's not and it won't.

^^

not trying to be mean here, but I dont see how this could be anything but your opinion

I dont see any facts you could point to that suggests it should be making EG Money

as I've pointed out, every single film thats topped 1.5 B, Its sequel has DROPPED and didnt hit 1.5 B(the lone exception is Avengers)

If Jurassic World 2 topped JW1's 1.6B..
If Fate topped Furious 7's 1.5 Billion..
If Age Of Ultron topped Avengers 1s 1.5 B..
If Avatar 2 tops Avatar 1's 2.780 B...

Then maybe you'd have something to actually base your expectations of SW making EG money on.

but your are looking at The LONE EXCEPTION and claiming SW should perform like that instead of what ALL OTHER Examples show

I see zero justification to claim SW should be making EG money

They're slowly losing the trust of the fans. Disney needs to continue to push good Star Wars content through Disney+ in order to gain back the fans they lost.

^^^

agree, but based on TROS OW, Its not nearly as bad as one expected...

SW fans are clearly unhappy but this isnt anything new....

7 of the last 8 SW films have beendisliked or hated by SW fans....

Yet SW fans are still coming in full force....

I made a post about this in another thread....SW fans are among the oddest thing I've ever seen....

I've never seen a franchise with such hardcore fans that dislikes the movies based on characters they love so much....

at this point, It seems almost impossible that anyone will ever make a SW film that will please SW fans....

I cant think of any other franchise where films keep getting made where the core fan base hates them and yet they still keep showing up in FULL force to make the films UBER successful....

so while I agree fans are unhappy and clearly some are passing....after 7 of 8 straight films that have disappointed SW fans....I think Its clear, The SW fans are going anywhere...

reply

annnd...in the end it didn't open to 190 million...more like 170-175, bill.

That's almost 50 million less than The Last Jedi and 75 million less than The Force Awakens.

reply

Deadline is already reporting OW, 12 hours before usual.
https://deadline.com/2019/12/star-wars-rise-of-skywalker-opening-weekend-box-office-cats-bombshell-1202814594/

4TH UPDATE, Saturday AM: Refresh for more analysis Some may say ‘Oh, it’s threequel-itis,’ but make no mistake: Who doesn’t want a $193.7 million opening in December?

[Lots of stats]

reply

Once again...Deadline overshot on a Disney film.

The real OW number looks to be coming in at around 170-175 million.

reply

Most publications have been estimating $190 million based off of Thursday & Friday. I know that $175 million was a conservative estimate before Thursday and Friday, but everything is pointing to $190 million opening. Guess we'll know for sure in 3-4 hours.

reply

Saturday was weaker than expeced so Sunday probably will be too.

Yeah...we'll see the numbers soon.

reply

$176 mil. Looks like you called it. I think this will send a strong message to Disney and Lucasfilm. Nostalgia with no story will only get you so far. The Fandom Menace has won!

reply

Thank you!

reply

176 mil OW is a message to keep making this kind of movie not a message to change the formula

reply

Well, the saga is over. There's no longer any formula to change is there? It doesn't really matter what they do from here on out. Again, this was the ending to a story 42 years in the making. Not saying this should have set records, but it should have at least made over $200 mil.

reply

The Skywalker saga is over but you have years of new Star Wars movies to come
