Better main leads

I was thinking maybe Chris Pine (or even Hemsworth) and Gemma Arterton would've been a better choice as this movie's leads.

Dane D & Cara D looked like teenage siblings and it was hilarious when they were bandied about as badasses while they shoved Clive Owen around after being assigned as his security detail. Same with trying to make Dane D seem like a playboy, when he looks like an awkward dork.

Also want to say, the intro sequence is great and one of the best ones ever.

Who would you have cast as the main leads?

I like this movie, in spite of its massive flaws, chief among them being the MOST MASSIVELY MISCAST LEADS IN THE HISTORY OF FILM!!! The theater audience actually laughed out loud when the spindly Laureline punched out a grown man, and also when she did her runway walk in the giant hat. It's such a frustrating movie, it could have been absolutely great with some minor tweaks and better casting, and it's too late to fix it now.

For casting better Chris Evans than Christ Hemsworth, Hemsworth isn't much of an actor except when he's allowed to be funny, but Evans can take a badass role and make the character likeable and vulnerable, as well as a believable badass. Not sure about Laureline, it's not exactly a demanding role, they just need a tall fit attractive gal to be Valerian's foil.

So you think Chris Evans would be better than Chris Pine? I have trouble seeing Evans in this role, cause he's been playing Cap for so many years now and has been a serious character. Yeah, he did a great job as the Human Torch in FF, but he was a lot younger back then. IMO, Pine can pull off being an action hero and doing comedy stuff as a bit of a womanizer better, a la Star Trek.

Either of them would be better than Dane D, for sure. I too like this movie v much despite its flaws - the visuals, concepts, set pieces and creature designs are amazing.

I think Chris Evans is more attractive than Chris Pine. And I think he's a better actor, I think he's much more likable (Pine usually comes off as a douche), and he's also bigger and stronger and easier to buy as a famed badass. But there's probably better casting to be had out there, maybe someone less classically handsome but with some testosterone, but yes. Evans would be my choice among the Chrises.

But I'd have chosen just about any biological male over DeHaan for the role, he was supposed to be a badass but looked like a hungover college freshman.

reply

(Semi-seriously) Here's a Chris that hasn't been mentioned: Chris Pratt!

Wait...too old, right?

reply

He's about the same age as my pick, Chris Evans, but I'd already considered and put him further down the list of Chrisses (behind Chris Rock). I haven't seen him play a convincing romantic hero, or a character who isn't a big jerk.

Sure, he's moderately handsome, can play a convincing badass, and can be very funny, but he's still wrong for the role.

reply

Blake Lively or Karen Gillain would had been great. Going back to the OP, any of the 'Chrises' would do. Even Chris Rock ;).

reply

Gillain can bring a much stronger personality than I've seen from Delvingne, but she's almost as physically spindly, so I can't agree with that suggestion. And I haven't seen enough from Lively to have an opinion.

And yeah, Chris Rock would have been WAY better than the dweeb they cast! Sure, he doesn't come across as a badass, but at least he's great fun.

Although I don't think either of the leads did a great job, and Cara D is fundamentally lacking in charisma, I do commend the filmmakers for looking beyond the typical bland heroic types, even if it didn't come off on this occasion.

I'm tired of seeing the same people play the same types of heroes in genre movies.

It's not so much about the same people but BELIEVABLE people. The biggest problem is when they cast people in roles and the audience doesn't believe them, and that was literally my biggest criticism for this film.

I like Dane but NOT in this role. And Cara has about as much charisma as a wet napkin covered in seaweed sand.

They should've cast Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. Sure it would've changed the dynamic of the story quite a bit. But wouldnt it have been a blast?

They're too old for that shit

johnny depp and amber heard when each of them were 20

Johnny Depp is an amazing actor tho

I'm going with Chris Pine.

Seems like a safe choice but as another commenter mentioned, he's not overbearing or over-powering as an action lead, and he definitely has a bit of that tortured charmer going on, which would have been necessary for a role like this, following someone who has seen a lot and done a lot and has just enough of a chip on his shoulder to be cynical yet hopeful. Pine is perfect for that role.

Someone mentioned Hemsworth, but he's just not right for portraying someone who uses being glib as a facade, which Pine does perfectly. Also Hemsworth is a little too large for life for the role, which needed someone a little more everyman, and Hemsworth is definitely not that (which is why he was perfectly cast as Thor).

Chris Evans is a little too... contemporary and dandy for the role. People will point to Captain America, but in many ways it was his boyish charm that helped sell him as the Cap. Here, Valerian needed to be only slightly world-weary (or galactic weary) but also charmingly witty and astute. Evans portrayed something somewhat akin to that in Sunshine, but it still wasn't quite the fun-loving playboy that Pine mastered in his portrayal of Kirk in the Star Trek films. In fact, despite his boyish charm, has Chris Evans ever played a convincing playboy in any film? I can't think of any.

Baring that, a foreign-born star could have been good for the role... a young Ewan McGregor would have been perfect for the role, or maybe David Tennant?

I don't particularly like him but James McAvoy seems like he could have pulled it off.

As for the female foil? Definitely Karen Gillan would be my first choice. Baring that, Niamh Algar or Elizabeth Debicki (but you'd need a tall leading man to match Debicki's height). A bit out of left-field, though, I think a Spanish or Italian actress probably would have been a better pick just to add some spice to the role, like Barbara Opsomer, who could have been great if paired with the right male co-star.

reply

Yes, Chris Pine (who is a bit old now) back in his heyday would've been perfect for the role. I can't see Chris Evans doing it, although his Fantastic Four Human Torch's version could've come close. He's a much more serious actor now. And I'd pick Hemsworth over Evans, as long as he brought his looks from Men in Black International rather than Thor.

Can't see Elizabeth Debicki tho - she looks weird af. Don't know the other one either, but Karen Gilliam would've been a great choice, for sure. I was thinking of Gemma Arterton from her Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia days, when she was young and sassy. Haven't seen her in anything in years. But yes, a nice, hot European actress with an accent would've been good too.

reply

Oh yes! Gemma Aterton from Prince of Persia would have been really nice. I'm not sure how she would have paired chemistry wise with Chris Pine, but I think it would have worked.

She has just enough girl-next-door aesthetics to seem relatable, but enough spice and sass to seem like she would match the exotic cultures and disparate nature of their quest.

I think this film could have been a cult classic with the right casting, because it was a cool adventure with tantalising special effects and brisk enough pace. But poor casting really ruined the appeal.

Pine and Aterton (or Pine and Gillan) might have been a good enough pairing to salvage it.

reply

I literally just commented on another post about mediocre leads.

Dane & Cara kinda "ruined" my enjoyment of the film. They were horribly cast.

Better leads would've been more fun to watch imo
