Whether film or video, I think Jonny Lee Miller’s depiction of Holmes is the best of the lot, including Rathbone, and head, shoulders and belly-button above Downey’s travesty; ergo, to answer your question, Elementary. Attic theory! I love it.

reply

I always thought Jeremy Brett captured the character best and still enjoy that series.

reply

There's no question about that. I don't even think it can be considered an opinion, it's that clear cut.

reply

Indeed

I agree wholeheartedly! He was the epitome of SH. He played Sherlock to an extraordinary degree , with perfection.

I also must give a nod to my "first" Sherlock- the ever-wonderful Basil Rathbone.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

I'll probably be shot for saying this among a bunch of Sherlock Holmes fans, but I loved "Without a Clue" with Michael Caine & Ben Kingsley.

reply

You mean Reginald Kincaid :-)
I love this movie.

reply

This is the one I'm talking about. It was a spoof of the Sherlock stories:

INSERT FACE SLAP HERE! I forgot the character's real name. Sorry.

Jeremy Brett is the ultimate Sherlock Holmes, Jonny Lee Miller sucks. His faux posh accent is so silly.

reply

I had no idea his accent was fake. I wonder what he really sounds like now.

reply

It's a lot less posh:

Wow it sure is. Even my American ears can hear it. Thanks for the link.

The Jeremy Brett TV series
Murder by Decree film with Christopher Plummer and James Mason
Sherlock tv series (first season only)

reply

The Jeremy Brett series, especially with David Burke as Watson, although Hardwicke was enjoyable as well.
Rathbone's series of films take 2nd place.

Elementary is good too, and I like Miller in the role.
I'll give Sherlock an honorable mention simply for A Study in Pink.

Downey doesn't even rank on my list.
