Episodes 1 & 2 out on AppleTV+

It held my interest ... I admit to watching it,
but there is always something kind of off-putting
about stuff that Idris Elba is in ... aside of course from "The Wire".

I don't know if writers don't know how to write for him, or if he
is given parts written for someone else, or bad directing, producing,
whatever, there is something off about him in this and other things
I've watched him in.

For one thing, in Hijack, so far, to me, his character seems pointless,
fake and totally supported by screen and plot gimmicks that don't
make a lot of sense.

His trying "relationship" to the terrorists seems very TV fake.

These Hijacker are amateur clowns. LOL! How do they not know about how Iraq would respond if the Captain doesn't answer? If Idris is not on that plan to babysit them through the first 2 episodes, then there would be no episode 3. LOL! So yeah, that is unrealistic, that in reality, hijackers would be this unprepared, and so easily taking advice from some stranger passenger.

reply

Plus, the captain is an absolute idiot.
Surely they must be trained and all know the score if something like this ever was to happen.
Not only that but he beat up his co-pilot?
Seems like the best course of action if you were the pilot would be to shut off the video and intercom, and let air traffic control know they have an emergency and make for the nearest secure landing site, and just try to ignore the sounds or shots outside the cabin.
Also ... whatever happened to the idea of having an armed air marshal on-board.
Then, also, not to mention how stupid those girls were.
They looked old enough to go and report the bullet directly to someone in authority.
This goofy scenario is bad enough, but they complicate it with a boring story of the guy and his wife breaking up.
This is heading for 3/10 land.

The good thing: It has Neil Maskell in it. The bad thing: He is no Arby from Utopia anymore...
Lame and uninteresting.

reply

No Jessica Hyde, no deal. :D

It's very realistic that hijackers may not be prepared. Ever hear of Uli Derickson? Hijackers boarded Flight TWA 847 and took control. Not one of them spoke English so they couldn't express their demands. One of them spoke German so they were able to communicate through her because she was the only person who spoke German. She was able to control the situation and saved a lot of lives. She even hid the passengers' passports so the hijackers couldn't single them out.

I just watched the first two episodes myself and couldn't agree more with this. The whole thing seems like it was written by AI, it seems very fake.

Also Idris babysitting the hijackers because he "wants to get home" is ridiculous. What if the hijacker's plan is to crash the plane into something? They don't seem to be after money as they've made no demands to anyone that they've hijacked a plane and have hostages.

I'm genuinely intrigued to keep watching though just to see how much worse it can possibly get.

reply

Yeah the characters that are worried that they might crash the plane are treated like assholes when the terrorists have never made their intentions known.

reply

Idriss looks constipated in every scene he's in.

reply

Watched 4 episodes.
It's one of the worst series I've ever watched I can't stand the stupid facial expressions they all give, especially the women whose supposed to be in charge, back to acting school me thinks.

Gave it a go as i like Elba when he's a Londoner and i love Neil Maskell but i switched it off after 20 mins. Corny dialog and the way it started to go down was so unrealistic to how people would behave, surely they would have code words if there were guns or threats on board.

A lot of the cast i recognized as minor supporting actors in bland T.V shows and even a couple of Soap actors so the quality overall is crap, also you have to mention the obvious Black/White quota in play.

Apple TV is shit i have it on a free sub for few months but everything i've seen has been poor, the crowded room, the news room one and Blackbird were crap as well.

Severence was amazing though i'll give them that

reply

Have you watched For All Mankind? I think that's great.

reply

At best it's a mediocre movie that's being drawn out for 7 episodes. I've watched 4 of them so far and unless I'm just forgetting, not a single person has asked why they are hijacking the plane. So far it's mostly characters on the plane doing secret things, a hijacker yelling at them to stop, and then scenes with people on the ground figuring out that the plane has been hijacked.

reply

There is a point where the let criminals go from prison, and they are tracking them. When they drive into a tree covered part of the road, none of the British Intelligence/Police group considers that these terrible criminals may have gotten out of the car and planned for this to get away. It was idiotic.

reply

In the end it was pretty mediocre, but it was entertaining and I think Idris Elba's presence made it fun to watch.
