Do you have any faith this will be good?

I'm on the fence.

You don't go from smart motley crew of space engineers, to hardened badasses, to freaky prisoners, to mercenary badasses, to idiot scientists, to even more idiot explorers, to idiot teenagers and expect people to think it will be good.

There is a successive degradation of quality when it comes to the Aliens franchise, and no one wants to see stupid teens being stupid trying to survive a xenomorph.

The only thing that would make me remotely interested (as an actual fan) is if they explored the contentious relationship between the Engineers, the xenomorphs, and the Predators. I would love an actual science fiction story that explored that dynamic and not just another horror-kill-off-team film, but something actually exploratory like Interstellar, or the Fifth Element, or Enki Bilal's Immortal, or Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury.

I don't think we're going to get a movie like that. I'm expecting they'll go with non-stop action and excessive CGI with the alien. I don't know why they don't hire a hardcore fan of the series to get it back to its roots.

reply

Based on the trailer I just saw, it looks like fan remake of the 1979 original.

reply

Is it official? I've only seen one where it was clips of Prometheus that was released last month.

reply

Apparently not. I assumed it was, but according to the comments it's a "concept trailer officially commissioned by 20th Century Fox" whatever the hell that means.

reply

I saw that trailer too -- it definitely looks official in some regards and fake in others, but I wouldn't be surprised if Fox was aiming to make the movie like that.

reply

Crapshow that will kill the Alien franchise.

reply

No, but Spaeny has chops for days. She'll be the highlight, like Rapace was for Prometheus.

reply

No. The Alien franchise has brought us varying levels of disappointment for the last 30 odd years. Your default expectation setting for any sequel should always be one of disappointment. Maybe if Denis Villeneuve had his name attached there'd be more reason for hope.

reply

Or Guillermo del Toro too.

reply

I would be intrigued by Del Toro taking on an Alien project but it wouldn't be as safe hands as Villeneuve in my eyes. DV did a good job with the Blade Runner sequel, with the remake of Dune, and I have been impressed with his other movies. I've not seen a movie of his that I didn't think was bad. His standard is a little higher and I feel he is more capable of bringing life to the franchise.

reply

I like Villeneuve way more than Del Toro, but I think Del Toro could do a good job with the creature aspect of it. The character designs would be crazy.

reply

I can’t help myself when it comes to Alien movies, so I’ll probably catch this at the theater, but I have liked the director’s other movies, so I do have a little faith that it can be at the very least entertaining.

reply

I'll watch it no matter the reviews, but I think this can go either way.

reply

No.
In fact I am 100% positive it will be total shite.

reply

Well, if it hasn't just thrown out Prometheus and Covenant, I see no hope of anything worthwhile.
