This is awesome! So well deserved. Where are you checking your stats btw?

Edit: nvm, found it!

reply

Box Office Mojo, where all your movie stats money desires come true.

reply

That's a tremendous box office. I wonder if it translates to a degree of goodwill for the film?

There is a distinctive and palpable reaction for some after seeing the movie that is mocked by others who don't share the same experience; but all in all the movie is quite praised for being entertaining.

Will the growing size of the box office create a curiosity as to what this "experience" is all about?

reply

Frankly i found the movie pretty boring.

reply

I am so sorry for your loss of enjoyment.

Why was it boring to you or what was it that you found lacking that would have made BP exciting for you?

Story?
Visuals?
Characters?
Narrative?
Action?
Relatability?
Motivations?
Performances?

reply

I found it to be average and thus only a little boring at times.

Story: Just ok. Worked in most ways but started failing when T'Challa's closest confidant went from isolationist to siding with the villain. Also Killmonger is shipping the Wakandan tech out to ... who? To random black people? Also adding a new "pulse" power to Black Panther like they added a new "pulse" power to Wonder Woman. Lazy writers that cannot deal with what they have on their plate. Superman's chest emblem?

Visuals: Outstanding except for several moments of very bad CGI

Characters: All great except for Forrest Whitaker's. Also the CIA guy was little lame.

Narrative: I liked it other than the fact that this advanced society chooses its leaders by trial by combat. Stupid. Also did not like that they made T'Challa freeze up because of love. I prefer regal, in control T'Challa. Not wide-eyed love struck teen style T'Challa. The romantic connection was fine. The portrayal was ill concieved.

Action: Mixed bag. The Korea stuff was great. One of the trial fights was good. Killmonger's heist scenes with Clau were cool too. All the Black Panther fights were boring and substandard. Even the good stuff wasn't all that high in quality. Disappointing.

Relatability: Who cares? Interesting that this is one of your chosen criteria. I didn't have to relate to my favorite movie Raiders of the Lost Ark for it to be my favorite. Relating to a movie is in no way a measure of its quality or "how boring it is"

Motivations: These were well established except where noted above (Killmonger's endgame and the inexplicable motivational flipflop of T'Challa's buddy) Overall very good.

Performances: Excellent. Everyone other than Forrest Whitaker (please stop casting him) did a great job.

The fix that would have made BP a great movie instead of an average Marvel flick would be to have made the action better. The fights were mostly bad.

I've only seen the movie once so I am just going by memory. For your first point Story:

Just ok. I'm not so sure Wakabi was a strict isolantionist. He appeared to want revenge for the death of his parents and he looked at T'Challa as a friend but not the leader he really wanted for the country he thought should be more aggressive. The outside world was catching up to Wakanda. T'Challa made a commitment that he was unable to fulfill. Erik did something that had bothered Wakabi for almost 30 years.

Who was Erik shipping the weapons to:

In Black Panther, Erik Killmonger defeated T’Challa in ritual combat and was hailed the new King of Wakanda. When Erik takes to the throne room and faces the other leaders, he announces his plans to arm his allies and the Wakandan undercover operatives that have been implanted around the world. Killmonger makes sure to mention the operatives who are in London, New York, and Hong Kong should receive the vibranium weapons.

Being that Erik was an ex-CIA operative he already had the contacts that he himself appears to have been facilitating and they weren't just in the USA. Erik was going to disrupt the world. There is also the coincidental connections with the seats of supernatural power via Dr. Strange and the sanctums?

The "Pulse" power was part of the more current comic run so it already had precedent and really can't be considered lazy. Additionally it speaks to the advancements that Shuri had implemented as upgrades to his Panther habit.

Narrative:

I liked it other than the fact that this advanced society chooses its leaders by trial by combat. Stupid. Also did not like that they made T'Challa freeze up because of love. I prefer regal, in control T'Challa. Not wide-eyed love struck teen style T'Challa. The romantic connection was fine. The portrayal was ill concieved.
Wakanda's ruler is King and Warrior/protector. The trial by combat is for the warrior NOT the King. T'Challa may have made a great king but possibly a very poor warrior. Wakanda is a society steeped in both technology and mysticism.

As to T'Challa being smitten by Nakia; and freezing? I found him human and relatable. Everyone knows that Nakia is his weak spot and it appears that he yearns to be with her. Nakia spurns that advance because she has her own agenda. His freezing humanizes him and he appears to be more concerned about her than the mission which was to extract her when she didn't really need extraction by the King.

The fight scenes I liked because they weren't over the top and very ritualistic. They were just two men fighting for the throne (but not really). Probably for years most of the tribes were content to be governed by T'Chaka and his lineage. It was M'Baku who wasn't really enamored of the T'Chaka lineage as they moved towards more and more technology. The waterfall challenge was for me supposed to be physical but quasi-realistic with little if any highly stylized fighting techniques.

reply

T'Challa can be smitten with Nakia without acting like a teenager. I felt it was out of character.

The only fight I thought was actually "good" was when Okoye started wooping ass in the casino. A few other fights were just ok and all of BP's fights sucked. They don't have to be "over the top" to be good fights. They just have to be good.

Relatability: Who cares? Interesting that this is one of your chosen criteria. I didn't have to relate to my favorite movie Raiders of the Lost Ark for it to be my favorite. Relating to a movie is in no way a measure of its quality or "how boring it is"
Maybe a poor choice of words by me in coming up with a topic or an aspect of the film. When watching a film you can basically "Identify" or "Relate" to a character or a situation and that draws you into the story. Perhaps? I related to Indiana Jones (more so because of Harrison Ford) and even named my first car, a white Ford Mustang, the Millennium Falcon. John McClane as an every day guy just doing his job is just as relatable to me as Steve Rogers being, "Just a kid from Brooklyn".

Like I said for me I found W'kabi's motivation and intent quite powerfully stated when he seemed to imply he would hold T'Challa accountable if he did not return with Klau. W'kabi wantd to go on this mission and take care of this long standing pain himself but was denied by T'Challa making a vow and a promise that was not honored. T'Challa didn't seem too broken up or even disappointed about something that was ultimately more important to W'kabi than T'Challa.

reply

I, too, only saw it once. Thanks for clearing up the recipients of the shipments. I must have missed that.

"Coincidental connections with the seats of supernatural power via Dr. Strange and the sanctums"?? I must have missed that too. Explain?

I heard opposing opinions of the current BP comic so I didn't add it to my pull. But I recently heard that Cristos Gage has been writing for it. I am a huge Gage fan so I'll check it out. However, whether in the comic or in the film, I do not like them giving Black Panther damage absorption. That is like giving Black Widow the speed of Flash. It casts a hard shadow over the traditional powers of the character. Like in Wonder Woman it feels like they had to change the character to fit the story the writers had in mind rather than writing the story to fit the character.

Speaking of Shuri (whom I liked), why was she attacking Killmonger when she knows about the damage absorption? She designed it for chrissake!

reply

Not to get too deep into the MCU but in the movie Dr. Strange it is established by the Ancient One that there are three Sanctum Santorums located in London, New York and Hong Kong and each guarded by a Sorcerer.

It is hard to say what the traditional powers of the BP are supposed to be when much of his habit is technology based on Vibranium. It would be lazy writing NOT to have upgrades. Traditionally Tony Stark/Iron Man didn't have near the type of gadgets and upgrades for the first 10 years but has been wildly upgrading ever since. the MCU has his upgrades at a head spinning pace but they have worked that into his psychosis and fears. BP has been the same in needing upgrades based on the threat.

Why would Shuri attack the Golden Jaguar knowing full well the suits limitations? The damage absorption has limits. Enough energy can cause the suit to breakdown and NOT absorb/disperse the energy. You see this in the attack patterns of the Dora Milaje and Shuri. Shuri also knew how to neutralize the suits.

I have my thoughts as to why the fight scenes along the train line looked like poor CGI and as some have said cartoony. The two combatants were supposed to be fighting in an area that nullified gravity. Their actions and motions thus appeared weightless and the fighters had this floating appearance and had to grab and redirect their momentum. I don't know that to be true but that was how it appeared to me. Also it is BP who tells Shuri to nullify the field so that the fight would be between men and not suits.

reply

Hmm. I don't see the connection to the Sanctums. London is a major city of the world. Too thin.

As to BP's power set, I don't mind upgrades. In fact I really liked the way they set up Shuri as sort of the Q to his Bond. The stasis orbs he used at the beginning were awesome. I just think that they went too far with the damage absorption. BP is an agile fighter. That is the fundamental description of what he "does." They gave him a power that makes that ability moot. He could just stroll toward his opponents now. Who needs the jumping around? Would Hawkeye care at all about his bow if he had the strength of the Hulk? So upgrades are cool but they went too far. I did not hear anything about "limitations" so perhaps it is another thing I missed. I need to watch it again I guess.

It would have been cool if Shuri did in fact neutralize the absorption ability on Eric's suit. Then Eric learn from that and do it to BP in their fight. Or BP disabling it in the end fight so that it overloads and jacks Eric up; That would set them up for eschewing its use in future movies. As it stands, it was a small flaw to me in the story and a big flaw in the treatment of the character.

To me it wasn't just the end fight that looked bad. BP's fights in general were bad. Even in the nearly perfect Korea segment of the film. His casino fight was lacking. The start of the movie showed what was nearly cool BP fighting but shrouded in darkness and blur. sigh

Your $868m prediction? You mean your $750m prediction. Which you later upped to "$810m max." If you just keep upping your guess every time new numbers come out, you aren't doing much predicting...

925-975 million is way too high. More like around 750 million.

WW would be around 750 million at maybe at most topping 810 million

$909 mil now and not even the end of the 4th week. Judging by the trend, it should reach 966 mil or more by the end of 4th week. :o

I find it quite ODD that People are just now realizing it is going to make 1 Billion

I made a thread on Sat. Feb 18th, Literally 1 Day after it opened, at that point Projections for Both Overseas and Domestic were coming out, At that point Projections were 190 M Domestically and 130 Million + overseas.

I then made a thread titled "BP is guaranteed to make 1 Billion as of Right now"..it was just simply Math, If you know how box office works, the second those early projections came in, you could easily calculate BP would easily hit 1 Billion

and its worth noting BP came in even higher than the Projections.

The Point is...once We knew Black Panther was having a 190 M + opening Weekend, We could calculate a 500 Million + domestic run..given BPs "A+" cinemascore, A 500 M + domestic run was guaranteed the second projections came in of a 190 M+ OW

then once the overseas projections came in at 130 M +....we instantly knew BP was out performing Doctor Strange in the same markets, Given that Doctor Strange had a total Overseas run of 445 M ....it was a certainty BP would at least make 500 M overseas

therefor, I made my "BP is guaranteed to make 1 Billion as of Right now". 1 day after BP opened...It wasnt me being a Box office guru or anything...it was just simply math, If you knew absolutely anything at all about box office...1 Billion + was guaranteed the second early projection came in

of course the actual results were larger higher than the projections....BP is now looking at a domestic gross between 620 to 660 Million and an overseas gross between 500 to 600 Million...resulting in a WW gross between 1.160-1.260 B...

OP, can I ask...how did you possible think or believe BP was only going to make 750 then 810 then 868 M?

I just find it stunning anyone could be that far off ...

Those were perfectly reasonable predictions before BP opened, But you made those predictions after BP opened...after BP opened to 201 M Domestically and 169 M overseas....how on earth could you be off that much?

its almost like you were intentionally trying to MISS, and give extremely low predictions

1.2 billion seems within reach now, including China's box office (it will fall very quickly as other similar movies and have a short run in China); But the international BO without China is still reasonably strong and close to domestic numbers. It will pass 1.1 billion today.

reply

Only 50 mil left to reach 1 billion. After Sunday it should be 964ish mil.

reply

$950m as of Friday, but not including international. It will be a billion by midnight.

Absolutely destroyed Justice League, and that had many white heroes in it. What went wrong for DC? Anyway, congratulations to Black Panther.

The only reason why this movie is doing well, is because it was pretty much a blaxploitation movie, suddenly everyone loves the movie even though from the trailers i could already see how poorly made this movie was. But as soon you say anything negative about this movie, you get called a "racist". I was not impressed with this movie at all, neither were my kids i took with me, CGI was poorly done as well. It's just another generic Marvel action movie, and im not gonna fake my opinion with this movie by praising it just because it has a almost all black cast. Where were all these praises for Marvel's Luke Cage?

reply

The only reason why this movie is doing well, is because it was pretty much a blaxploitation movie

^

Ok there is some truth to this....but not nearly as much as you are claiming...

the correct statement would be....."The reason its doing so much better than other similar MCU films is it was pretty much a blaxploitation movie"

the facts are...Black Panther is drastically over performing...and that a EVERYTHING to do with its Cultural Impact

but the facts clearly also prove this film would have been a success regardless....as Tracking for the film started out at 90 to 100 Million and Overseas gross dont have hardly any Impact from the Cultural Impact

So heres the truth

About 350 to 400 Million dollars is because the of the "blaxploitation/Cultural Impact"

the only thing you can for sure LINK back to "blaxploitation" is Black Panthers Massive Over performance domestically

It is SAFE and IMO Accurate to say Black Panther got just a Massive bump Domestically from the Cultural Impact of this film

IMO Black Panther should have opened between 90 to 120 Million and made between 230 to 300 Million Domestically...that is what similar MCU films have made, that is how BP would have performed, Overseas grosses would have been the same....

So you can not accurately say the ONLY REASON why The movie is doing well is because it was pretty much a blaxploitation movie...

The Movie would have done Well regardless making between 700 to 825 M....

but what you CAN say is the ONLY REASON why The movie HAS DONE SO MUCH BETTER THAN EXPECTED IS because it was pretty much a blaxploitation movie...

Domestically this film exploded and massively over performed as a direct result on the Cultural Impact....it resulted in an extra 300 to 400 Million dollars....but even if this did NOT happen, The film was still look at a 230 to 300 Million dollar domestic gross, which is great

the film would have been a HUGE success regardless, The Cultural impact made it A BILLION dollar + success

suddenly everyone loves the movie even though from the trailers i could already see how poorly made this movie was.

^^^^

but going by the rest of your post...It seems like you are either not a MCU fan or have a particular dislike for this film...so pretty much everything I said Will not matter

PS...I agree about the CGI...

I'm a big MCU fan and CBM fan...I enjoyed Black Panther, I rated it a 8/10....

I thought everything until the Finale was Great, But the Final fight between Killmonger and BP was awful....so awful in fact I'm convinced something went wrong in Post Production...

I can not imagine Marvel Studios putting out this movie With That bad of CGI during the final fight and The Fight itself being so poor shot and edited...

I'm convinced something went wrong, maybe they ran out of time, maybe they needed to do reshoots and couldnt get the ending right....regardless, IMO I feel the end fight was just so poorly done for me it takes the movie from Great to just Good....

had the ending had proper CGI and a better Fight, Id have no problem Calling BP a truly great CBM, for me everything was there, Great Story, Excellent Villain, Great Action Sequences, Great Performances by Many different Actors/actresses....but Then It has a FATAL ERROR in the last 10 minutes...

So for me BP is just Good...not great
