shareIt was not a good movie and some of us made fun of it at the time. It was slick and glossy, like a television commercial. The only people I ever knew who liked it were women who were in love with Tom Criuise.

shareGood critics like Pauline Kael hated it in '86 too. It's made with some degree of competence in manipulating its audience, but it was mainly females who reacted to it. I will never forget coming out of Top Gun in 86 and the girls in our entourage were singing that oldies song they sing in Top Gun. I was disgusted because I knew the movie sucked. It's what they used to call in the 80s "high concept" (that is, a movie that can be summed up in 25 words or less). Yet I know I cannot ban this film because it works for its target audience of girls and gay males with lousy taste in movies.
