Alive has just been surpassed.
What a film.
shareI liked Alive better. This one just felt like an exact, scene-by-scene retread of Alive....but with annoying subtitles.
And the subtitles came and went so quickly, you had to stay focused on the bottom of the screen, so you wouldn't miss dialogue.
Also, this was just too long. Between the length of the movie, all the subtitles we had to focus on....and the fact that it didn't bring anything new to the telling, we walked out after about an hour and 15 minutes. Just felt we've seen all this before, but better.
I've watched tonnes of foreign films and subtitles are never an issue. Better than horrible dubbing.
You didn't even watch the movie anyway so can't really take this seriously.
Some films shot with a foreign language and subtitles work fine. Apocalypto comes to mind.
But the other distracting factor in this movie was...there were so many dimly-lit scenes, it was just a mish-mash of bearded men's faces, all looking and sounding similar, and speaking in a foreign language. It became hard to dicipher who was who. Who was Nando? Which one was playing Carlitos...?
In Alive, it was easy early on to understand who the initial leader was (Vincent Spano as Antonio)......who the emerging hero was (Ethan Hawke as Nando)......who the comic relief was (Bruce Ramsay as Carlitos). It was also a nice touch having John Malkovich as present day Carlitos, doing the narrating.
IMO, Alive is still the better film experience and telling of the story...and it was filmed 30 years ago.
Oh, so Alive containing stereotypes and archetypes is somehow better than a film that has the complete blessing of the survivors and the families of the dead? I understood who was who just fine. Numa, Nando, Canessa, the Strauchs, Susana, Liliana and Javier.
Alive was made by Americans for Americans and embellished the details to make it easily consumable for a largely North American audience. The true leader was Numa and Marcelo were the leaders. Marcelo was the captain of the team. Numa was the spiritual centre. Antonio was not the leader. After Numa and Marcelo's deaths, Nando became the leader. That is a fact. The narrating by Numa (Enzo Vogrincic) was perfect. He was speaking for the dead urging the living to survive.
Because the film was filmed 30 years ago and is told largely from an American standpoint means it's better than the film that had the support of the country where this all happened, the survivors who put their full support behind the film, and the families of the dead who felt their loved one were given proper respect and a voice? The part that was classy and put this film leaps and bounds above Alive was how Bayona put the dead's names and ages up the screen in I suppose was hard to read given the "foreign language" was hard to understand? Spare me.

I am watching this now. It’s dubbed. Looks like Netflix gives no choice. Mixed emotions on that.

Look at your menu. I initially began watching the dubbed version, then found the subtitles and the original Spanish.
