Is it cool to dislike Chris Nolan now?

Seeing a decent volume of vitriol toward Nolan here and on other sites. 10-15 years ago, everyone and their dog wanted to be seen as on board with the guy.

I think he can be regarded as a smart director, and he made some smart movies, but sometimes he could get overly pretentious and make things difficult to understand.

In terms of this movie, he introduced too many characters too fast and neglected some of the character development.

The biggest mistake I think was about Jean Tatlock, in fact both his wife and girlfriend were neglected. We have no idea why they do what they do, which would have been OK if they were not main characters.

I think the mistake was to introduce the nude and sex scenes with Jean Tatlock and we have no choice but to pay attention to her, and there was nothing there.

And also we have no idea why his wife was so skilled at handling the prosecutor. And I really started to think she had training for that, from whatever sources.

I think it’s due to the fact that his Batman movies have aged horribly.

reply

I don't agree with that at all.

reply

Who gives a shit what is cool or not? Especially amongst a bunch of film nerds on a movie site. Why the hell do people flock like sheep one way or the other?

This film was phenomenal, and brilliantly acted. If Nolan doesn’t win Best Director at the Oscars for this one he never will.

reply

Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. maybe, I think they should win awards for this.

But Matt Damon just does not look the part of a general.

And I don't think Nolan can win Oscar with this, then again Oscar is more of a popularity contest, and becoming more and more political these days, I am not sure this movie would satisfy the diversity quota.

reply

I hope so. Never liked the guy or his movies.

reply

Every filmmaker that makes it big is then seen as overrated.

reply

Spielberg? Scorsese? Tarantino? Cameron?

reply

Yeah, they got their critics too.

reply

Let’s start from the beginning, who is calling Spielberg overrated?

reply

When was the last time he made a great movie?

reply

2005 (Munich), almost 20 years ago. Bridge of Spies was quite good also, but needed a better ending.

reply

You can't get much more overrated than Cameron...

reply

But he is a miracle worker, the new avatar movie proved it once again.

reply

Yeah, he is the king of boxoffice, no doubt.

reply

I've noticed the same. I don't pay them any mind. I still look forward to every Nolan movie. "Oppenheimer" was certainly better than "Tenet".

reply

He's a good director but his fanbase is ANNOYING AS FUCK. People hail him like the 2nd coming of Christ because he made some pretty good Batman movies, and now comic fans everywhere would pay a few grand to drop down and suck his cock. Never seen a director with a more infuriating fanbase, not even QT or Wes Anderson.

reply

There's a small segment of people that hate him for being a straight white male that makes movies that primarily appeal to men.

reply

Ah, those people. Thank god for straight white men. Wouldn't want to imagine the state of the modern west without their efforts.

reply

Look at the people who are mad about Greta Gerwig not getting nominated fir best director for Barbie. These women and some self hating men think she's entitled to the best director Oscar based solely in her gender.
