Boring bad

I thought it was one of the best we've had in a while. Not perfect but we got to see how he became negan.

I just don't know what it means for the future though. The episode seemed to be Negan basically finally accepting his mistakes but now it looks like he could be going to war with Maggie.

> we got to see how he became negan.

Did we though?

What about all the people who went though atrocities and did not become Negan. Is that just sending the audience an excuse that become a mass murderer if someone does something mean to them?

reply

Obviously not. But then this is a different world to the world we are In now. That doesn't excuse anything but in reality people would be like this, not wanting to share their stuff and wanting what others had.

I read somewhere someone stating they never thought a zombie outbreak would cause issues in real life if it happened then they saw how people stupidly behaved during covid

In the short term maybe, but that makes someone a psychopath, and psychopaths do not lead to stable groups of people, and in the long run groups of people are where it is at.

Even Negan and Governor knew that, in their twisted way. A psychopath filled society leads to failure, and there is no such thing as a society of psychopaths ... unless maybe one considers the Republican party! ;-) Just kidding.

When you look at most of the peaceful hunter-gatherer societies they are pretty fair and egalitarian, and that seems back where the groups of survivors of the zombie pandemic would be at first. It seems to me that over time people would have to bond together, and there is enough room and freedom for people to just leave places that did not meet their needs or make them happy.

It had a nice Return of the Living Dead reference.

reply

It was.

The worse these episodes get, the more they need to hype them with after shows and specials like Talking Dead where all the actors talk about how great they are, what a family the show is, and how great the writing is. Everything we see is manipulative advertising in one way or another.

They've done the same with The Expanse too. The last two season have been kind of crappy.

reply

It was okay I thought, nothing spectacular though. I'm weary of the pacing of the show, it just feels so slow compared to when it first started. These single character-focused episodes are annoying, every episode needs to feature most of the main cast and move the story forward. When they do the time travel flashbacks and stuff then it's even more obvious the writing team is out of ideas.

reply

Yeah. It was absolute nonsense. We're expected to believe a little bitch like pre zombie apoc Negan turned into a monster just like that? Oh he beat a dude up in a bar? How many people across the world have had a little bit too much to drink and got into it with someone? Countless. Hell, go out into a semi large town at chucking out time and you're guaranteed to come across someone getting a beating. I've witnessed it a bunch of times. Do I think if the world went to shit, those people would go on to do stuff like Negan? Hell no.

It was all very, we want to establish a start point for Negan and somehow end up at psychopath Negan with minimal effort into the journey.

reply

Just to add it wasn't beating someone in a bar that turned him into Negan.

He was cheating on his wife and being a general asshole then realised the error of his ways when his wife was diagnosed with cancer.

He was willing to do anything to get the medicines to keep his wife going. It looks like she killed herself the day he left and basically seeing this made him snap.

reply

Yeah, I know. They used the beating as a jumping off point to establish his capability for violence. I'm not sure if they said how long the cheating had been going on for. Either way, being a dick and cheating on your wife, beating someone up and experiencing the death of your wife shouldn't push someone to do what Negan wound up doing.

reply

I should add that while this changed him we didn't see him go full negan. Maybe stuff happened after that that further made him into the negan we know

reply

Uhm no it wasn’t.

reply

This times a billion. It's probably the best episode in the whole series, or at least since Rick's final.

reply

Agreed. On of my favorite episodes of the past few seasons. THIS is what the show is about, how the apocalyspe changed people, how it changed the world, and a great back story.

The real genius of the episode, it made Negan somewhat likeable again.

reply

I still think it was pretty bad. After all this time.
