I wonder if that line about capitalism being stealing hurt the box office. Did culture wars right wingers notice?

Using the word woke like conservatives do is awful, of course, but I do think that's the kind of thing the sort of people who complain about "far left politics in today's movies" get upset about. From a pure marketing standpoint, it's interesting that they chose that line out of a two and a half hour movie to put in ads that are supposed to be convincing people to buy tickets.

It cost over 300 million, so they really need to appeal to a wide audience.

Are people at Disney so completely living in a bubble that they didn't realize that might turn some people off? Or are they putting their principles ahead of profit?

The movie gets you to defend capitalism, how is that even left?

Think about it, the movie is made by capitalists.

reply

Steven Spielberg all about money, he loves money! All he talks about is profit.

reply

I'm talking about a line in the trailer, how that will play with people who see it.

The trailer doesn't give the impression that the movie defends capitalism. There's clips of some action scenes, and a few lines of dialogue, including PWB taking a shot at capitalism.

reply

I think they purposely used the word capitalism improperly.

reply

Big nail in the coffin for my ever seeing the movie. They were so happy with that line they built the whole trailer around it. Really summed up what you could expect from the rest of the movie.

I didn't go see Rogue One because of that pretentious arrogant "I rebel" line and it turns out it wasn't even in the movie! Disney are marketing geniuses.

To think of it, that line was so much worse. I think it said a lot about their writers.

reply

Not worse than "Because if we can't protect the Earth, you can be damned well sure we'll avenge it."

reply

That line was cheesy, but not childish like "I rebel", which I think was a Disney influence.

If you watched guardians of galaxy 3, the friends of Rocket and the later young child test subjects, I think all have something to do with Disney writers.

reply

How about this: "Don't ever cross Alex Cross."

reply

I haven't watched the film, but it is interesting word play.

reply

Having a song about the Devil as a core part of your marketing strategy may not have been such a smart idea for a 4th of July family film either. Note that they dropped that last bit about capitalism out of the trailer a few days later. The fact that Disney themselves removed it a week later gives us the answer to your question.

reply

I'm going with the bubble theory. I think that line played great inside Lucasfilm. Maybe no one higher than Kathleed Kennedy OK'ed it.

Also, Disney shows its true colors when doing business in other countries, like China. The high level executives who make the decisions are as Capitalist as anyone. (On the creative side, it's a different story, of course.)

reply

Maybe having PWB praising capitalism was Lucasfilm’s way of endearing her to the anti-woke conservative audience.

Moreover, PWB is descended from British nobility. That makes her pretty right-wing in my book.

reply

Fleabag, if anything, was hardcore liberal.

reply

Disney, just like every other corporation, has probably HALF their top executives who want to destroy the corporation. The other half is just too weak/lazy to worry about anybody but themselves(higher salaries every year).

In other words, NOBODY is properly running the corporation.

reply

I am shocked and offended that Disney didn't make this episode about Indy getting Woke and traveling all around the wordl to repatriate the artifacts he stole during his career.

reply

"It belongs in an American museum"

I sure noticed. It put me off seeing the film entirely. But my brother is a huge fan, so he bought me a ticket. I'm glad he did, because I enjoyed the film immensely. The line didn't bother me in the context of the film, because the Waller-Bridge character is a crook. But, yes, putting that line in the trailer was incredibly dumb and I have no doubt it hurt their box office. Whoever decided to put that line in the trailer is an idiot, and so is whoever signed off on it. Just shows you what a bubble those leftists idiots are living in.
