Why didn't Spielberg direct?

I know he was working on it - allegedly other projects came in the way - I also read years ago that he had a minor falling out with Ford due to some political comments he made.

Besides directing - I'm more curious about THE SCRIPT they ended up using - is it the same as the one Spielberg had been working on when he was on board?

reply

One thing we know is that Crystal Skull sucked. Did that have something to do with it?

reply

Because there was no way in hell he was going to work for his former assistant.

reply

Spielberg was unhappy with Ford not proclaiming far left politics. Ford had become more center or even a tad right.

reply

These days he could even be left of center but proclaimed far right.

reply

Is there any evidence of this?

reply

Spielberg probably knew the hate Crystal Skull received (justifiably) so why walk back into that swamp?

reply

Spielberg seems to have just grown out of doing these types of movies. Sure, he did 'Ready Player One'. And that wasn't incompetently made, but was his heart really in it like his earlier blockbusters? He just appears more interested in these glossy prestige pictures now.

reply

Crystal Skull seemed like it was made for the cast more than the audience. Like a reunion vacation for friends. Let's hang out in exotic locations and get paid.

reply

If that was the case, at least invite Sallah to the wedding.

reply

Ha Sallah should have been Indy's best man by rights. I don't remember when Skull took place, early 50's I guess, but it would probably take months at minimum for Sallah to get to wherever the hell that wedding was.

reply

Shit, they had jet airliners by then.

reply

Yeah but who knows when the snail mail would find him in the dessert. 2 weeks would be optimistic back then. If he left the day after receiving the wedding invitation, probably at least a week to make arrangements, plane ride, charter a boat and a guide. Oh wait I was thinking the wedding took place in some jungle but now I think I recall it took place in a church in the US. So they didn't have long security lines back then but can't imagine world spamming flights were as frequent as they are today. Idk my guess is it's take a while, either way they should have invited that bastard.

reply

John Rhys-Davies was invited to do a cameo for the wedding, but he declined - saying fans of the character deserved more than a mere cameo.

Not that we got a helluva lot more in Dial.

reply

Crystal Skull was a rare case of Spielberg directing a film that he didn’t really want to direct. He said ‘I’m doing this for the fans’.

We all know what betraying his instincts resulted in. No way was he going to make that same mistake again.

reply

Yep, he originally intended to stop after Indy 3 but Lucas talked him into making Indy 4.

Lucas isn't around to pressure him anymore, so Spielberg is OUT.

reply

I didn't know that he didn't want to do Crystal Skull :(
