one of the best movies i've ever seen

holy shit this is one of the most unique, ambitious, and original films ever made. 3 hours long but always interesting and completely unpredictable. it does feel long, but ari aster is a master of keeping your attention. i genuinely never knew what was going to happen next. outstanding performances from every actor on screen. beautiful cinematography, excelling editing, perfect direction from ari aster. just amazing. this is coming from someone who thought Hereditary was all style and no substance. Aster is an outstanding director when the script is good.

Have you ever seen Synecdoche, New York? Recommended if not..

reply

IF YOU HAVE SEEN THAT FILM...YOU WILL NEVER FORGET IT...ABSOLUTELY HEARTBREAKING.

reply

I've seen it, but I've completely forgotten it.

🍭

reply

The director's track record is such that I'll definitely see this film.

reply

Is it a comedy? The poster looks pretty funny.

reply

i would definitely categorize it first as a dark comedy over any other genre. the first hour or so has some moments that are flat-out hilarious. most of the humor is funny simply because of how absurd and ridiculous the scenarios get, in the same way EEAAO was funny. but the movie has some really dark and serious moments to counterbalance the humor.

reply

No, it's misery porn. You follow a guy being tormented for almost 3 hours.

reply

No. It wasn't funny at all and lacked any legitimate punchlines

reply

How does it compare to Inland Empire (another 3 hour mindfucker)?

reply

The middle section of Beau shares what I would call a mobius strip like structure similar to what is seen toward the end of INLAND EMPIRE (when Laura Dern's character is watching herself in the movie theater), which is also similar to the end of 2001: a Space Odyssey when the David Bowman character sees himself in advancing time frames. Beau is a much funnier and more brightly lit film.

reply

Thanks. I’ve actually since seen the film… and found it boring, a far cry from Lynch’s abstract masterpieces that really draw you in.

I love Hereditary and Midsommmar was pretty good too. I'm kind kind of sceptical about this one. Which movies would you compare it to?

reply

it's not like anything else Aster's done. it's quite hard to describe. i'd compare it to EEAAO, or something by David Lynch, tho don't go into it expecting it to be anything like that.

Honestly the closest film i can think of is Under The Silver Lake, another A24 kinda-horror adventure comedy about a character that kinda goes from place-to-place and weird shit happens to him without rhyme or reason. I think both films have the same cinematographer so both films look really similar too. This is better, tho.

reply

Thanks! I had a feeling that this might not be my type of movie, but I will check it out eventually because Aster is a very interesting director.

reply

Ooh, I didn't think of "Under the Silver Lake," but that's a solid comparison. For me, the Coen brothers and Charlie Kaufman came to mind most, as well as Scorsese's "After Hours."

reply

How similar is it to Everything Everywhere All At Once?

reply

Not really in tone or theme, nor in the direction. but they're both very ambitious movies where the script takes sudden random turns that always keep the audience on its toes. there's some "wtf?" imagery in this that i'd say would fit very well in EEAAO. i'd say it's this year's EEAAO and I hope it starts to see a similar response from critics and audiences.

reply

EEAAO was a widely overrated film in my opinion. Every critic was saying you will either love or hate the movie. I loved it. Admittedly, I was not a huge fan of Aster’s previous two movies, but this was great. Even at 3 hours I was never bored.

Don't you think the psychiatrist violated HIPAA?

reply

Reminds me of O Lucky Man! (1973) which also had a protagonist experience a series of improbable events, films like this come along every 50 years or so.
