So I hear Shazam! is great and Capt Marvel is boring

And thats coming from a good friend who can only be labeled as largely an MCU fan due to the quality of the series, but who is also not one to take sides beyond that comparison.

Curious what others think about that.

I just watched Shazam and liked it. Good movie and maybe even a great movie...? Anyway it’s a fun watch and my only problem is the poor CGI but that’s my opinion and it doesn’t detract from the movie at all.
As for Captain Marvel I enjoyed that too. I think people were expecting too much from CM but it was just a fun romp on our way to Endgame. Now I wait for the GOT final season to start and then endgame. I got no time to hate on these movies I just enjoy them all.

reply

They were both enjoyable. I had more fun with Shazam though.

reply

I found Captain Marvel a bit dull and generic and I thought Shazam was goofy fun and I tend to like the MCU a lot more than the DCCU.

I think if Captain Marvel came out in 2007, it would seem more exciting. It has a similar tone to early Marvel movies. It feels like the first Thor movie or Incredible Hulk. It doesn't help that it deals with a lot of characters and items we've seen in past movies/TV shows so it adds surprisingly little to the mythos. Shazam is more in the vein of Wonder Woman and Aquaman. I'm impressed that DC seems to be crawling its way out of the muck.

reply

Aquaman was awful, 10 years time that bloated video game cut scene exposition-fest will seem dated as hell

reply

CM was ok, your typical MCU origin story with a sprinkling of girl power. Had some funny moments as well but the poor CGI was unacceptable. Shazam was decent as well, started slow but then got good. Overall good movie but the ending took forever and was cheesy. Probably will never see either movie again. Bubba is stoked for Endgame, I have my diapers and snacks all ready to go!

reply

Yeah Endgame is gonna be good. I'm going to wear extra 3D glasses.

reply

For sure, extra 3D is the way to go. I might wear 2 to the 6D effect, but I wouldn't recommend it.

9-D BABY!!!

And the party never stops.

Well, first and foremost it’s always best to go see for yourself.

As for thoughts on this... boring biased Captain Marvel haters aside, sure, some people (even MCU fans) share your friend’s opinion. But according to a lot more viewers, Captain Marvel ain’t boring. Regardless of how many are saying online that Captain Marvel is an average MCU film, at the end of the day a a film doesn’t get an “A” Cinemascore and hits a billion at the box office for being dull and run-off-the-mill (away detractors and your loony conspiracies). In short, the way your friend feels doesn’t reflect the way most people feel.

Pitting Captain Marvel & Shazam against each other is silly to begin with. Granted the comparisons were inevitable given the whole name situation that certain fanboys can’t let go of, but the two of these movies and characters couldn’t be any more different from each other. Captain Marvel boring? Though it can perhaps be slow at times, it’s no less fun than various well-liked MCU films. Its slowness isn’t problematic for me anyway. CM is decidedly character-driven and at one point it takes a bit of a breather from all the action. Yet, not once did I find myself bored with it. Many keep saying that it feels like a Phase 1 MCU film, however I ultimately fail to see what’s so bad about that, especially since I found it to be thoroughly engaging and to have more unique qualities than most of the early stuff. It was well-developed and in my view it went places other MCU films didn’t (e.g. the Marvell scenes/flashbacks and twist). And whilst the story and performances are the film’s biggest strengths, the action is pure excitement.

Concerning Shazam, it’s entertaining and charming as heck. Although... I don’t see what makes it standout in the modern superhero age, either (apart from its premise). Its tone and humor are fabulous, but new it isn’t. Is it a “funner” movie than CM? Fun is all Shazam is about! Silly and joyful fun. A much better movie? Don’t see how. I do not think it’s a lesser movie, but like I previously suggested, they both naturally aim for different tones so to me it’s pointless comparing. What they do have in common, though, is they’re both well-constructed (for the most part) and neither is without one or two issues. Having said all that, I do have to put this out there and say I still find it amusing knowing that a DCEU movie - for the third time - is being described as fun and crowd-pleasing. Oh how times change. But I digress.

In conclusion, just go see them and decide for yourself. I myself couldn’t have been more pleased with them. After seeing all this Captain Marvel hate that’s been spread tho, I of course must say that I’m with Carol Danvers all the goddamn way (truly digged the film).

Thanks for your thorough feedback, and I definitely eventually will see both. But I'm still not sure which I want to see first, and the second place here would risk not being seen in the theater.

reply

The only thing I take umbrage in is your assertion that a movie making a lot of money means it's good. By that logic, Michael Bay's Transformers are brilliant masterpieces that eclipse The Godfather trilogy.

reply

If one accounts for inflation, The Godfather films made more money than Transformers.

But I'm just being picky, since I do agree with your overall argument. Bigger BO doesn't necessarily mean better film.

reply

I'm typically not into the DCEU because in my opinion their films haven't been very good for the most part, but Aquaman and especially Shazam are changing my mind. Shazam was a very fun superhero movie that also kind of parodies superhero movies which I found great.

I've been on board with the MCU from the beginning and although it's not the best, Captain Marvel certainly isn't the worst and it's also a good watch. The thing about it though is that it's very similar to the phase one MCU formula in terms of origin stories, though has an interesting twist about half way in.

All in all, I'd recommend both.

reply

Captain Marvel has interesting elements, at least to me, but the writing could have been better. There was so much going on and they didn't juggle it as well as they could have. I would definitely rate Shazam higher.

reply

Shazam! is indeed better than cmarvel. The latter is not terrible, just not overly interesting - whereas Shazam! is more a fun movie. It's pretty standard as far as a comic film storyline is concerned, but still watchable.
