Most analyzed superhero movie ever

It is strange how this movie was released in 2007 and there have been several Spider-Man films since, but there seems to be a new video on YouTube ever so often that talks about the film and analyzes its production and underlying story and character elements. Why are fans interested in this film more so than seemingly any other superhero film?

It altered the trajectory of superhero movies. Had this not had the production troubles it did, they'd have made a 4th film and likely beyond. There would be no Amazing Spider-Man series and Spider-Man's existence in the MCU also might not be. I say 'might not' simply in reference to the idea that X-Men will be in the MCU eventually, and Spider-Man may be in a similar situation by now. Either way, not only would the MCU be different, but we wouldn't have the stand alone Venom that we do, along with its upcoming sequel and the upcoming Morbius. The ripple effect of this movie being so expansive is, on its own, very interesting. The mess that went on behind the scenes is worthy of continued conversation.

I think a lot of people wonder how can you go from one of the best comic book movies ever in Spiderman 2 to the worst in #3.

reply

Not a lot people think Spiderman 2 was the best. In fact, it sucked like every Spiderman movie. People talk about 3 more because it's absurdity is literally the only interesting things that happens in the movies. It's memorable for how bad it is. Other than the well known origin, there is nothing interesting in Spiderman's character, villains, or Parkers soap opera bullshit life. One big forgettable snoozefest. But no one forgets the crazy emo Parker version, or the other retarded shit that happened in 3

I think Spiderman 2 is the second best Super Hero flick right behind Batman 1989.

Hey everyone is entitled to their opinion. But most people would put Superman, the Nolan Batmans, Some X-Men movies, and probably even Blade over Spiderman 2. Then there are wildcard ones that arent considered Superhero movies but are like Robocop (87) , the Matrix, TMNT (1990), Orgazmo, and Unbreakable. All better than any Spiderman movie.

Spiderman 2 was actually very well-regarded when it came out, and it is still regarded highly among comic book films.

There were certainly a few who eschewed the Tobey Maguire films as a whole, and you appear to be one of them, but this is a minority perspective.

Spiderman 3 is not the worse comic book film. You're deluded if you think that.

reply

At the time it wasn't well received.

It's mainly that this was the worse of the series. The stupid retcon that Uncle Ben was killed by someone else and that he may have died even if Peter stopped the robber. The stupid emo Peter and dance scenes that were really only in it cause both Raimi and Maguire hated the symbiote story and didn't want to take it seriously. Casting Topher Grace as Eddie Brock instead of casting a bigger guy like the 616 comics. And even if you can get behind his casting, a lot of peoples' favorite Spider-Man villain Venom is on screen for like 10 minutes and is blown smithereens most likely because Raimi didn't want to give him his own movie. It's just a bad movie and Raimi could've made it better but insisted on all these stupid things. Personally I prefer ASM 1 and 2 to Spider-Man 2 and 3 and I know I am in the minority. I also don't like the MCU Spider-Man that much and the changes they made to the characters in it.

I prefer the comics to the movies and I felt ASM was closest to the character of the comics. Though it still had it's changes from the source material. I feel Sony and Marvel have changed him too severally and we'll probably never see Gwen or the actual Mary Jane in a movie again. Then again Sony seems to not want to do Black Cat as a love interest in a Spider-Man movie either. Instead we're getting Ultimate Black Cat who is years older than Peter because Sony hates 616 fans.

A hardcore spidey friend of mine said he felt ASM really nailed the in-costume persona per the comics and old cartoon. I was never a big spiderman fan but I should probably watch those films again just to give them another chance.
