"R" RATING FOR VIOLENCE?

I believe this is the first time a movie received an "R" rating solely for its graphic violence.

reply

Death Wish (74)

Probably tons of others if we take some time to look
I will if you are game👍

reply

I'll see what I can find.

reply

Code of Silence (85)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (74)
Dirty Harry (71)...all of the Dirty Harrys...

There are a ton of them!
I appreciate your post, too often modern movies go for the PG or PG13 rating for box office sales and I get the economics...it is a business!

But I do miss the R's
They seem rare now:(

reply

Again, films like Dirty Harry are not solely on violence as the original post conveyed about The Patriot. Outside of the violence nothing in the Patriot would come close to merit an R. Films you are mentioning do have things other than violence that would add to an R rating.

reply

Well, you seem to be more aware of how the rating system works than I am Duck
I always just assumed that graphic killings or sex scenes got an R but you make a good point
I suppose 'language' and other themes may figure into it

It really is a silly system lol

reply

There is still plenty of R rated movies made they are just rare in the Summer.

reply

Death Wish (74) was not solely on violence. Plenty profanity in that one. I believe perhaps other sexual themes too outside the rape during the initial home invasion.

The Patriot had mild at best...as IMDB says about the Patriot's profanity "Basically none. Some "Damns" and "Hells""

reply

I can't recall any sexy stuff from Death Wish (I considered the rape as violence obviously) but there was some 'language' for sure

The R rating for The Patriot was pretty silly

Nice work Duck
The ratings system is pretty stupid...we should do a whole thread about this absurd ratings system

reply

>>I can't recall any sexy stuff from Death Wish (I considered the rape as violence obviously) <<

Same here, but I was thinking perhaps a scene with a pimp, and/or a hooker "in action" or along those lines.

Rape is violence as you said.

reply

I think they showed the daughters breast while getting raped also.

The first to be rated R solely because of violence MAY have been 1968's The Split, which was in fact the very FIRST film ever to get an R rating at release. Now a days it's no longer an R (by today's standard). I am unsure if anything else in it would contribute to an R based on the 1968 standard.

reply

Matrix in 1999

What about Godfather in the 1970s?

reply

Eh the Godfather did have a sex scene and another nude scene.

reply

The Last of the Mohicans directed by Michael Mann was rated R based soley on the violence.

reply

The Alien movies were all rated R for violence long before this came out. (The Predators too)

reply
