What if Truman Raped Someone?

That would be very awkward for the show's producers

reply

I'm just curious as to why you would even think of something like that?

reply

Why not? No one had any control over Truman.

reply

No one had any control over him? Did you watch the movie? They had complete control. That was the entire plot and theme.

reply

He was allowed to walk around freely

At any moment he could have pinned someone down and digitally penetrated them

Sure, they would have come in to stop him, but not before he did some permanent psychological damage

reply

He lived in a controlled environment, he himself, was not controlled.

reply

His environment was designed to control him. The comment was:

"No one had any control over Truman."

Yet somehow I seem to recall a scene where there was a director dictating everything that happened in his life. hmmmm

reply

They weren't dictating everything that happened, the were responding to it.

reply

I think about raping people every day. For pleasure, for power, just to be mean, to exercise power. Rape is control. It's no different than making money. Owning land. Hunting. Making laws.

reply

Well aren't you special 🤪

reply

The producers could easily cover it up.

reply

haha right!? For all we know he raped 10 children and because the show was making so much money they never did anything about it. Now that would be real Hollywood for you.

reply

I suspect there would have been a 12 second delay in place where they could black out the screen in case things were going in that direction. Also, control would just send out a battalion of police officers at him if he made an intention to commit rape.

reply

Why would someone, growning up in a controlled and nearly perfect world become a rapist? Why people become rapists? First of all, they need to know, that you can surpress people, can threat them - Truman never came into any of this situations and it's unlikely they let him watch non-family movies. So he does not know, you can do bad things on purpose to people and he also does not need to, because he is not actively surpressed (at least until he has his in-movie breakdown).
Even if he would have a strong sex drive, it would not need to end in rape for him - as the producer would feed him with enough actresses willing to get famous by bang on TV (of course this wouldn't be shown on main channel, but on Paytv).

Of course, we can argue about People born bad, which I don't believe, but that power corrupts. So if he would have come out as "The Omen" kid, they could have stopped the show early on, before he does real crimes. Don't forget, they know everything he did, so every of his steps are tracked. It would never come to a rape situation, because rape is not be doable in affect, to much ample time to get even any actor into his house. An in affect murder or serious damage on the other side would be possible, but even here should be enough ample time to react in most cases.

It's strange but interesting question.

From legal point of view, I would first examine the question of what is the accepted value system and the norms in the world in which Truman lives. The same we examines crimes at other countries. I believe the answer will be very simple, we have no reason to assume that murder or rape is allowed in Truman world. The world they created for Truman based on the laws and norms of the real world - even if it's only a simulacra. He underwent a socialization process similar to that of the citizens of the United States. Truman aware of the difference between good and bad and therefore responsible for his actions.

reply

He'd presumably be subject to the same laws as any other citizen, and unless he had a child by that stage, I suppose the show would have to be cancelled prematurely.

But ultimately, I think every effort was made to socialise Truman to be a good person, thus mitigating the likelihood of him ever committing particularly abhorrent offences.

The bigger issue I have is not so much whether Truman ever did anything as egregious and extreme as commit a rape, but how he'd be judged by the viewing public for the types of things many people do everyday. Does the camera turn off when he masturbates, assuming he ever did, and what if he said something sexist or racist within the privacy of his home? In today's climate, would he be automatically cancelled for such behaviour, even though the sad truth is that such behaviour would probably not be that unique? Look at how social media and YouTube scrutinise an individual's body-language (such as an eyeroll) for the merest sign of contempt/transgression.

In other words, it's how Truman would be treated for the things the rest of us take for granted (i.e. the everyday misdeeds and misdemeanours) rather than the big crimes that, thankfully, few of us commit, that is the more pertinent question IMHO.

Kind of on-topic tidbit about this movie:

“A scene in the original script depicts a staged rape scene witnessed by Truman, who doesn't go to help the actress about to be violated and just moves on. When he's gone, the actors and actress return to normal and express wonder at how he didn't try to help, or even do anything about it.”

reply

This is one of the real-world questions that doesn't work within the context of the story.
