Woefully underrated cyberpunk film

I really enjoyed this. The aesthetic, the plot, the shootouts, even Russell Crowe's hilariously over the top acting was a treat in this. Ignore the 5.6 score this has and give it a watch if you want to have a fun time.

Yeah it goes alright. Guilty pleasure of mine. Seen it a few times, always fun.

It's currently 5.6. I would say it's a bit underrated, not much though. 6.5 would be overrated IMHO.

Theres not much in the genre to grade against, as a cyber thriller. Hackers, Jonny Mnemonic, Source Code, Blackhat, and Nerve are all better movies. Jonny Mnemonic is probably the most comparable to Virtuosity, they are very similar, and close to the same age.

It's definitely worth watching though if you like the genre, for sure. Other people won't get over the aged special effects and out of place soundtrack.

While I agree with you for the most part, Johnny Mnemonic falls flat on its face about halfway though and I always end up turning it off. I actually enjoyed Virtuosity more since I can actually sit through it all the way.

reply

Nah.I feel a 6.5 is pretty accurate. Definitely no higher though. It might seem a pretty generic cyber punk action thriller on it's face but I found that I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would and watched it multiple times as a kid. Denzel Washington brings forth his seemingly effortless presence & charisma where many big actors would likely have phoned in the role. Russell Crowe's hilariously over the top performance was also pretty memorable & showed his versatility. Virtuosity and The Quick & The Dead were the first movies I saw Crowe in and I didn't realize he was the the same until many years later, well after Gladiator made him an A lister

Absolutely a fun watch. Love Crowe as Sid 6.7 or whatever the fuck he was called.

reply

Can you really call it underrated? It's not a good movie. It's fun - the definition of a guilty pleasure - but it's not a well-made movie, so to call it overrated seems a little off. Crowe's performance is a riot, I agree.

reply

Its usually a fun watch when I go to rewatch it. Was glad I found it on the SciFi channel years back. If you like Sci-Fi, Serial Killer shows, Russell Crowe or Denzel Washington, then this film is worth a watch.

It's impossible to rate cyberpunk too low. it's a fucked genre.

reply

The problem with cyberpunk is that everyone has their own idea of what they think it should be, so of course no movie or TV show can ever live up to the unrealistic expectations. In some cases, one single movie/show is viewed as "perfection", so all other similar movies/shows can never measure up.

reply

I don't remember this film, but I watched along time ago and i thought..wow, denzel can actually act in this.

reply

I wish I could appreciate like you do, but it's not my thing. It was on HBO a lot. I remember watching it and not being interested. Every time it came on after that, I'd reluctantly let it play or just turn it off and find another activity.

5.6 seems fair.
