The prima nocte wife

So what happened to her other than having to sleep with the English lord? When her husband gets revenge, I always got the impression that he was avenging her death. We never see her again in the movie either. So is it implied that she is killed by the English or was she returned to her husband eventually?

reply

In the scene where the husband takes his revenge, the lord specifically says that he didn't harm her, that he merely claimed his right as a nobleman. The husband then said he was there to claim the right of a husband. So he killed the nobleman for bedding his wife - no more, no less.

reply

Guess that makes sense. The fact that we never saw her again always made me think twice. Glad she lived, at least, haha.

reply

So did they just let her go?

reply

I assume they let her go, but she came back pregnant with the English Lords child. My question is did the husband kill the little bastard when it was born?

reply

How do we know she was pregnant? There really is only a fairly small window during the month where a woman can get pregnant. Most of the month nothing happens, so the Anglish lord would have had to get somewhat lucky for the timing to be right.

reply

Great question and point. It brings up a whole bunch of issues.

Knowing that a baby was the result of a rape from an English lord it is hard to imagine the young husband and wife just bringing up the child normally. So would they kill the child at birth or try to abort the pregnancy?

Can you imagine being a child growing up in Scotland where people know your father is a pos English rapist?

What about inheritance? The child becomes an adult he might be looking for his share from his biological father.

reply

The men went to fighting and hiding after that.

That prima nocte thing was a big pile of crap. Nobody would have put up with that in any time period in the past. It's based on the medieval equivalent of an urban legend that was mostly confined to a small, specific area of France, and there's no proof it was ever truly practiced. Mel Gibson put it into his film to hype up the drama and make the audience think that the Scots hated the English due to that, in addition to being cruel rulers.

reply

interesting.

reply

Yeah as a kid I always assumed they killed her. But I guess she was set loose as prima nocte says that the Lord only has a right to her on the night of her wedding. But yeah odd we don’t see her again.
