Friends isn't one of them but here's the definitive list for those who have been looking for it:-

Seinfeld
Peep Show

The Office (US)

I take it that is your own personal definitive list. It has some overlap with mine (which I won't bother posting because it keeps morphing).

Just curious -- which "The Office" are you referring to, the original British show or the American version of it?

Good point - I meant the US version. Loved the UK version as well but don't think it really ran long enough to put in an all time list...

I'm wondering how much our choices are influenced (in a number of ways) by when we were born? For example, do people who first saw I Love Lucy on its network run tend to have a different opinion from those who encountered it later, in syndication? And what's the effect of the person's age when they first saw it?

I think that's a fair question.

I wasn't born until long after The Dick Van Dijk Show had finished but I loved it when I watched it. Having said that, I haven't seen I Love Lucy, which you mentioned, and probably quite a lot of other older classics.

I guess nationalities play a part too - not sure if most Americans will see all of the UK sitcoms.

Seinfeld fans are insufferable with their superiority complex. I don't like Friends either, but It's undeniable that Friends is way more popular around the globe than Seinfeld.

That could be disputed in that FRIENDS is actually a ripoff of SEINFELD

It is possible to like "Seinfeld" and not have a "superiority complex".

It doesn't matter which show is "way more popular around the globe". That doesn't necessarily mean it's better. If that were true, then MacDonald's is the best restaurant and Coors is the best beer.

I wouldn't class Curb as a sitcom, not sure what you would categorize it as, but the production level is way above what a regular sitcom would be. It isn't bound by a few locations like all the others and most of it is filmed on locations. Plus the score elevates it to something else, Curbs in a league of it's own

If Curb isn't a sitcom, then animation like The Simpsons and South Park shouldn't be considered either.

Maybe, i don't refer to cartoons as sitcoms either they are just cartoons.

A sitcom for me is when the characters are largely in one or a few locations for the majority of the show with little variation in camera shots.

They usually have their base and somewhere else they hang out with limited external locations. Basically cheap to make.

Curb has so much flair and scope it's like it's made by a top European Director at times

But in essence it is kind of a sitcom so i won't argue if everyone thinks it is

I forgot about Newsradio. Great show.
I also like The King of Queens whenever Arthur is on. Jerry Stiller rules!
